Year Purchased: 1998
About the owner: I fell in love with lake life as a child. We grew up near the Fingerlakes in NY and summers were spent at Keuka Lake. That crystal clear natural lake surrounded by rolling hills spotted with vineyards marked the location of my happiest times. When I relocated to Georgia to work for a 'start-up' called CNN, I immediately began looking for a Georgia lake experience that would at least somewhat compare to my beloved Keuka Lake. Many lakes and many rentals later, I was drawn to Lake Burton exclusively. The clear waters and full pond, the gorgeous North GA mountains (oh! and is that a vineyard or two springing up?!), the easy drive up from Atlanta that put me in another world for the weekend...it was meant to be. Today Keuka Lake and Lake Burton are pretty much tied on that favorite location of all time list in my head. I consider myself so lucky to have such rich memories of my lake days as a girl, and I want more than anything to provide my 3 daughters and husband, my extended family and my friends with memories to rival mine.
Why the Owner Chose Lake Burton:
When I purchased this property, an 800 sq ft cabin stood where our dining room now sits. That little cabin provided me with 5 years of cherished memories. It affectionately became known as 'the treehouse', nestled amongst the trees. When we tore it down in 2002 to build our 'lifetime' vacation home, I felt a bittersweet twinge for that tiny, deteriorating little shack.
As I undertook the design of our home, I wanted a unique 'outdoors brought in' element. We needed a support for the main floor and I thought about a stone pillar or a beam. While talking to a couple of my closest friends about this challenge the idea of having a climbing tree in the house came up. But how do you get a tree with sturdy branches down low on the trunk? These two friends solved this by traveling to family property in Washington, GA to 'collect' the eastern cedar that stands in the house today. It was no small feat to move a tree; and our contractor rose to the installation challenge as well. Thus, our new home became 'the treehouse' with a whole new meaning...
