Winston mobile home description
Nestled among cottonwoods and cattle ranches outside Helena, Montana, the D Bar W (shorthand for 'the 'Double-Wide') is a no-pretense, all-you-need, nothing-you-don’t basecamp for adventures on nearby Canyon Ferry Lake or in the Elkhorn and Big Belt Mountains.
The D Bar W vacation rental is tucked down a dirt road in the Beaver Creek area of Winston, Montana (population 334)– just a few miles off the well-traveled Highway 12/287 yet an area that only a handful of locals know about. Peaceful and secluded, what the D Bar W might lack in style it makes up for in authenticity: a real, working landscape steeped in agriculture, dark night skies that make for exceptional stargazing, and easy access to some of the Montana’s best lake recreation, fishing, and hunting.
The two of us reside on-site (though out of sight of the D Bar W), along with our friendly golden retriever Ozzie, horses Evie and Tuffy, and a small flock of chickens (who have been known to stock the fridge of arriving guests with a sampling of their work). We feel lucky to live here, and believe this is little area of Montana is a really special place.
We would welcome you to stay with us! –Katy and Tim Peterson, Hosts
Luxury, no. A good night’s sleep with some nice touches, yes.
The D Bar W is a 1970s era doublewide with some of the finishes to prove it (avocado fixtures, seashell-shaped bath sinks, a faux fireplace...). Vintage feature aside, the D Bar W tends to pleasantly surprise visitors with its bright, spacious, and nicely appointed interior. There’s a small collection of Tim’s antlers and horns that have outgrown our home next door. And it has the things that Katy’s mom taught her make for a comfortable stay: nice towels, soft sheets, a good game or two, and a waiting campfire pit.

The D-W was the perfect stay for us
The D-W was the perfect stay for us
I was traveling with my two young sons and we had a blast at the D-W. Katy and Tim provided great hospitality amenities for the stay: everything from a loaf of fresh Montana bread (yum), bocce, to soft bath sheets. The property is very private, with an authentic Montana feel, yet close to the reservoir and the Winston Store. Highly recommended and we'll come again.

Quiet location in the trees, easy Lake access!
Quiet location in the trees, easy Lake access!
We stayed at the D-Bar-W for two nights while passing through with our boat, having decided to test the waters on Canyon Ferry. What a pleasant surprise. Really nice quality touches that made you forget you were staying in an older doublewide!! Who knew?? Spacious, super clean, cozy, unbelievably peaceful setting. Even though the owner's home was through the trees, it was private and it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. We grilled our dinners on the front porch and enjoyed the fire pit under the stars both nights. The lake fishing was good, and it was an easy 5 minute trip to the boat ramp. We would definitely stay here again.

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: The two of us purchased our place not far from the shore of Canyon Ferry Lake, Montana, in 2007. Tucked through the trees away from our house is a very well cared-for doublewide that we've given a facelift for friends, family and visitors. We've even been known to slip away over there to get away from the endless work associated with keeping a rural property (complete with horses, chickens, and endless clearing of downed Aspens from the woods!) going. We'd welcome you to stay with us! --Katy and Tim Peterson, owners
