Owner info

Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: Grandma & I rent this house from our daughter and partner who down the road with 3 grandkids: six, five, and two. We spend part of each month here reveling in grandkids (and helping parents) and enjoying the rich variety of activities in a university town. Our other two grandchildren (seven and four) are in Boston area so we are in our Boston home the rest of month enjoying the wide variety of a 'bigger' university town. Having failed retirement twice from the computer industry, I'm giving it one more honest try. Grandma is retired after teaching early elementary across 39 years. Personally, we occasionally use VRBO to rent, with friends, a villa in France where we shop the outdoor markets and wineries and cook up a storm.

Why the Owner Chose Ithaca:
A decade ago, our daughter and partner bought the 150-year-old farmhouse across the road from Thornapple, gutted it, and had architect sister-in-law redesign the interior to a beautifully laid out farm house for raising kids. They befriended the retired late-70s gal across the road in Thornapple Cottage. It came to pass that she was planning to move south and live with her daughter, leaving the house that she and her husband built and raised a family. Finding it would be would be on the market, our daughter bought it for a rental. When we decided to become two-location grandparents, we simply rented it from our daughter. Needed some major redecorating so we did it. Grandparent sweat-equity. Pretty much child proofed, its a wonderful destination for us and, from the comments from the renters we've had thru VRBO, others love it too.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Being 12 minutes from Cornell University and 20 from Ithaca College, the house is wonderful for visiting parents, visiting professors, and others such as autumn deer hunters. Grandparents wanting to visit their grandchildren whose parents are in grad school will also find Thornapple Cottage a real treat. You're able to visit your family, retreat to your own house, and invite your family, grandkids, or whatever over for an afternoon or a dinner. Eat-in-kitchen seats 4-6 for informal meals and dining area has IKEA fold out table where we've seated 8 or 10 (with a card table assist.) A locally-owned full-service super market (friendly, owners onsite) is five minutes away, along with full service library and a good country restaurant with a brew-pub bar where the grandkids can drink Shirley Temples and throw peanut shucks on the floor. A full mall is 12 minutes away as well as up-market shops you'd expect to find near an Ivy League university. Great-grandma's 100 year old quilt is on the new queen-size bed and the twin beds have wonderfully firm and comfortable mattresses - and the twins can be made into a king. A ceiling fan moves a complete change of air thru the house every couple of minutes on summer evenings and a window a/c is unobtrusively in place for those really humid nights and days. Sitting on the front or back porch at dawn or dusk in summer rewards you with a wide variety of birds trilling their hearts out. Deer, which last fall included a set of twin fawns, occasionally hang out in the back yard, playing like puppies. (Could the salt lick under the three apple trees be an attraction?) Large front window frames beautiful sunsets in both summer and winter. Full HD TV with cable and DVR make for relaxing leisure time. Drive-in garage with auto door means that getting groceries in during rain or cold is easy and convenient. Very few mosquitoes the past two summers, just at dusk.
