Open Year Round! 5,800 Acre Lake, Quiet Sandy Bay, Level Lot
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Vaulted knotty pine ceilings, hardwood floors, and a new pillow top queen-size bed adorn each of the bedrooms. The west bedroom has a dresser and a closet, and the east bedroom has a double closet with mirrored sliding doors and shelves.
Additional sleeping space for one on the living room couch, and for another guest, a twin-size,
20 inch-high air bed, equipped with a super-comfy memory foam mattress, which works well in the sunroom or living room.
A 3 season sunroom looks over the lake, and is furnished with wicker from Pier One, including a hanging Swing-a-San chair, a favorite of many.
One bathroom has a small tub, with a hand held shower, a handy feature for families. The other bathroom has a walk-in shower with a glass door.
A washer (soft water!) and dryer will save you a trip to the laundromat, resulting in more time for you at the lake! Kitchen and bath towels and bed linens are provided.
In the living room, you can watch the flat screen TV, surf the net using free wifi, or just gaze out the picture window at the lake. There is a DVD unit for the TV, and also a small DVD player that can be used in the bedroom. Have family game night using one of the board games available!
Create home-cooked fare in the kitchen, using the full-size electric cook top and oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and just for fun, a waffle maker. Cupboards are stocked with pans, dishes, and utensils ready for your use. Grill those brats and burgers on the large gas grill! Dine at the breakfast table in the kitchen, at the snack bar, or take your meals in the sunroom, where there is a larger table.
For warm days, switch on the air-conditioning, or you may use the fans if you prefer. There are also ceiling fans in the sun room and the kitchen. Other notes: propane furnace, and single car garage.
Have your morning coffee on the deck overlooking the lake, in the laid-back comfort of adirondack chairs.
Cozy up beside the lakeside fire ring; the first campfire wood is included in your rental (marshmallow sticks too!). The big lake with its open sky displays incomparable views of the stars, moon, and clouds.
Situated on a quiet dead end road, with no neighbors to the back of the cottage, enjoy the privacy Doane Cottage has to offer. Fifteen yards of level walkway will take you from the house to the lake; a sandy lake bottom, with a shallow swim area suited for kids and adults alike.
The dock can be used to tie up your boat. The bay is sheltered, and has calm waters. Situated right outside the bay is a concrete public boat launch, so launching and landing is no problem! If you do not own a boat, the resorts right on the lake have fishing boats and pontoons available for rent. Included in the cottage rental are two ocean kayaks and life preservers for your use.
Wildlife is abundant at Lake Miltona. Spot Pileated Woodpeckers, loons, egrets, ducks, turtles, and much more, while just sitting on the bench at the end of the dock.
At 5,800 acres, Lake Miltona is the largest lake of over 300 in the Alexandria area, and it is a premier fishing spot, with muskies, walleye, northerns, bass, varieties of sunfish, and more. Its size makes it an excellent playground for water sports, and the lake itself is easy to navigate, with its clear water and sandy bars.
The area boasts a winery that is open daily, live theater as well as a cinema, and a bowling alley. There is a selection of restaurants for every palate, ranging from Angelina's pizza and pasta, to Bella's romantic Italian, to Bugaboo Bay Carribean. Tennessee Roadhouse has fantastic ribs, as well as live country music, and Chet's Lakeside Inn has been featured in GQ Magazine, and is the home of a secret Swedish Chicken recipe.
For golf enthusiasts, there are no fewer than eight golf courses in the area, with the nearest being the Lake Miltona Golf Club, located on the other side of the lake. Arrow wood Golf Course and Geneva Golf Course are two of the others that are nearby.
Head to town, where you will discover antique shops, boutiques, a maritime museum, and a historical museum. For your favorite cravings there are chain restaurants, bakeries, and ice cream shops. On the edge of town, take advantage of the mini golf course, go carts, horseback riding, and indoor water park.
Find fast thrills at the weekly stock car races or the demolition derby, or slow the pace at the vintage car and boat shows during the summer.
Minnesota is proud to be known as a 'rails to trails' state, and the Central Lakes Bike Trail runs right through Alexandria, winds around the lakes, and extends as far as you want to ride through the neighboring small towns and picturesque countryside. There are bikes and equipment for rental in town..
Alexandria has something for everyone, with a skate park, a library, a YMCA, and a park complete with ducks to feed (you bring the bread!). Kick back and relax! There is even opportunity for spa services, ranging from massage to body wraps.
There's a lot here, but this list is not exhaustive. You will not run out of things to do! Your hosts will provide you with literature, and are happy to give you directions and further info. Welcome to Doane Cottage on Lake Miltona in Minnesota! The countryside is scenic, and the people are friendly (Have you heard the term 'Minnesota Nice'? These are the people!).

Dear Tom and Jane, Our weekend at your cottage was comfortable and cozy for us 4 old guys. We brought up snowmobiles and had easy access to miles of groomed trails that brought us to some little town and had the best hamburger and fries for 5 bucks. Later, back at your cottage, a nap, shower, and made a gourmet dinner in your kitchen and enjoyed the lake views with the setting sun. Thank you for your contact information and instructions. Our weekend was an outstanding success. JeffRecommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for the kind words. We were so excited to have snowmobilers come to stay, we are right on the DATA trails, so there are hundreds of miles of trails guests can access. It is hard to describe how tranquil it is on the lake in the winter.

We really enjoyed our stay even though we had to cut it one day short due to the snow storm (blizzard) coming overnight and all day Sunday. The ice had just frozen over, but not safe enough to explore much on the lake. It's a very nice place and very comfortable. I'm sure it would be very beautifutl in the summer as well. We usually head to our own "lake place" in Trade Lake, WI during the summer, but only have a camper so it's not condusive to winter stays. We also took in the play "It's A Wonderful Life" at the local AAAA theatre. What a treat and a wonderful performance. Alexandria is such an beautiful vacation city and especially beautiful with the Christmas decorations. We also had fun Antiquing and found a few "treasures". We also bought a few goodies at the Douglas County Historical Society bake sale. Those Scandanavian women (and some men) sure know how to bake tasy treats and Senator Knutes old residence was beautiful old home. Thanks again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: We appreciate your enthusiastic description of Alexandria in the winter. The merchants and residents strive to make this town a year round destination. We are proud of the Scandinavian history and cuisine Alexandria has to offer (Jane is part Norwegian!). We are also flattered to host guests that have a lake place of their own. Thank you for choosing to spend your vacation time at Doane Cottage.

This cabin and its owner are very accommodating. There was constant contact from the start to ensure we would have a good time. Nice 2 bedroom home with a great sun room that we took advantage of. Lake is very long with lots of fishing opportunity. We used the dock to catch some of our best fish with our young child. Overall a great place to stay.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children.
Owner response: We are very happy when we can know that we helped a family to have together time. The photo of your daughter and wife and the northern you caught off of the dock was precious! We hope to see you again.

We had a great time at this cabin. It's on a nice inlet that opens onto the main body of the lake, very quiet and beautiful, surrounded by open countryside. The cabin itself is clean, comfortable, and well equipped, with a full view of the lake. The owners have done their best to make this an enjoyable and relaxing place to stay.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: We strive to offer a place that is relaxing and enjoyable. We want to "Share the Fun" with everyone that comes to Doane Cottage!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2012
About the owner: Tom works in medical imaging, and Jane works in education and also at a group home. Married 24 years, we live in the Metropolitan suburb of Ham Lake and are proud parents of 3 adult daughters. Aside from time spent at the lake, we both enjoy the outdoors, biking, reading, and anything that has to do with family. We like to meet people, and enjoy travel.
Why the Owner Chose Alexandria:
We both love the water. Tom is a longtime boat owner, and Jane grew up beside a lake, on a farm just north of here. Friends and relatives live in this area, and we vacationed here before we purchased this cottage.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
The view from anywhere on the property is so relaxing and therapeutic. Coming to the cottage is a dramatic change from the pace of workaday life.
The vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors, and the sunroom with its wicker furniture are charming.
The size of the lake makes it a great playground for water sports and fishing.
This cottage means spending more time with family and friends, and making them a priority.
The Alexandria area caters to the visitor, but is not over crowded, and has somethng to offer persons of any taste or interest.
