Enjoy our Octagonal glass house nestled in the woods with views of the pond. It is on a quiet, country road yet only a mile from shopping and all that the Mad River Valley has to offer.
In summer, listen as the stream flows by the bedroom, enjoy a barbecue on the deck, or just sit and watch the heron feed on frogs in the pond. In winter the house is cozy - cuddle up on the couch with a good book or pop a movie into the DVD or VCR and let the Hearthstone gas fireplace warm you as you watch the snow fall. In autumn, you can enjoy the foliage without ever leaving the living room. Any time you can enjoy the Mad River Valley's central Vermont location and take pleasure in the many activities and attractions within an hour's drive.
The house is minutes from some of the best skiing in the east at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush in the beautiful Mad River Valley and has a snow-shoe trail right out the door which links to the Catamount Trail. Cross-country skiing on marked trails through beautiful forest is practically at your doorstep. Groomed cross-country skiing is nearby. In summer and fall the snowshoe trail can be used for hiking or mountain biking. For outstanding hiking, the house is only minutes from access to the Long Trail.
The Octagon House is designed to sleep four to six people in two bedrooms. The Master Bedroom has a queen-size bed and an en-suite full bathroom with shower/tub combination. The Second Bedroom has two twin beds that can be made up as a very comfortable king. The living room has a queen-size sofa bed. Both bedrooms have telephones. The second bathroom is also a full bathroom with shower/tub combination and is just outside the door of the bedroom. There is also a crib. For our guests' convenience, upon your arrival you will find fresh ground coffee, milk, orange juice, cereal, hot chocolate mix, and tea. We provide all linens. There is also free wireless DSL throughout the house.
Since 2008 we have replaced the cooking stove & oven, the couch in the living room, the phones, the clock-radios, the lights on the walkway (done 9/14/10), the "front" sliding door, the gas furnace, the microwave, the living room and master bedroom lamps, the floor in the kitchen, the clothes dryer, the mattress and box spring in one of the bedrooms, the railings all along the outside walkway and stairs, and we replaced a charcoal grill with a Weber gas grill summer 2010.
The open kitchen, dining room, and living room areas are very welcoming and the entire house is carpeted except for the kitchen and bathrooms. The kitchen is fully-equipped with a large refrigerator, gas stove, microwave, and plenty of dishes and utensils. Downstairs there is a slate-floored ski storage area as well as a utility room with washer and dryer. The Octagon is a Non-Smoking house.

So disappointed! Property photos would appear to be taken some years ago. The property is in need of complete refurbishment inside and out and in our opinion would not be safe for children. Would not recommend. Vermont is VERY beautiful!!Owner response: We were not only shocked but very puzzled to receive this review. We have been in business for 31 years and added The Octagon House to our property 12 years ago. At that time we renovated it completely and have continued to make improvements, adding wi-fi and cable as they became available and always looking for what we can do to make the house more comfortable for guests. Since 2008 we have replaced the cooking stove & oven, the couch in the living room, the phones, the clock-radios, the lights on the walkway (done 9/14/10), the "front" sliding door, the gas furnace, the microwave, the living room and master bedroom lamps, the floor in the kitchen, the clothes dryer, the mattress and box spring in one of the bedrooms, the railings all along the outside walkway an stairs, and we replaced a charcoal grill with a Weber gas grill summer 2010. The refrigerator, which is working just fine but not energy efficient is slated for replacement December 2010. As these guests did not have children, we did not discuss with them the precautions we take regarding the open spiral stairs in the house or any other special arrangements for small children. We are very sorry that these guests did not enjoy the property and even more sorry that they never said anything to us about their disappointment while they were here and so did not give us the opportunity to address their concerns at the time.

We stayed at the Octagon House near Mad River Glen for two nights. The photos and description are very accurate, its a unique spot. We found it to be clean, well-maintained and fun. The warm stove in the living room kept us cozy. The kids appreciated the wi-fi and we appreciated the coffee, milk, juice and cereal that our innkeepers provided. We were able to ski at mad river glen (only a few miles away)and enjoyed that very much. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, scenic, restful vacation. Our only regret is that we didnt stay long enough to have a meal at the Millbrook Inn- apparently the menu is excellent (heard from a local!)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.

Owner info
About the owner: Since 1979 Joan & Thom Gorman have been the owners, innkeepers, chef, baker, and staff of Millbrook Inn & Restaurant. in 1998 we added The Octagon House to our property as a vacation rental. Our college textbook publishing backgrounds nurtured a love of travel in both of us and for years we have used the off-seasons to indulge that love. Our vast travel experiences, as well as Thom's years in the Peace Corps, have enabled us to bring some of the world back to The Octagon House and Millbrook both in our food and our ambiance.
Why the Owner Chose Waitsfield:
The beautiful Mad River Valley boasts outstanding winter sports -- downhill skiing at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush, cross-country trails both groomed and back country, and snowshoeing right from The Octagon House. The summer is gorgeous as well with kayaking and canoeing opportunities and hiking right out the back door in the Green Mountains.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Octagon House is set in the woods with a brook running right by one of the bedroom windows. In summer you can sit on the deck and watch the resident heron hunt frogs in the pond. The unique round house is cozy and comfortable and a bit like sleeping in a glass tent. With all the comforts of home -- a fully furnished kitchen, washer/dryer, TV, free wifi, DVD player, hiking or snowshoeing right from the door, The Octagon House is a unique rental property.
