The Winemaker’s house was built on priceless To-Kalon vineyard land given to a loyal employee of Beaulieu Vineyards, a man who was involved in all aspects of winemaking at one the first great Wineries of the Napa Valley. The legend of the To-Kalon vineyards begins in 1867, when H. W. Crabb purchased 240 acres of land in Oakville, and planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the valley. He called the land “To-Kalon, “Most Beautiful” in Greek. By 1877 Crabb was producing 50,000 gallons of wine and had transformed his dusty acres into the Napa Valley’s first premium wine district. But he wasn’t alone. John Benson gobbled up 400 nearby acres and commissioned H. W. McIntyre, the architect of the wonderful Inglenook (now Niebaum-Coppola) and Greystone (now the Culinary Institute of America) wineries. What Benson and Greystone conjured up was “Far Niente” (Italian for “for nothing”) the enchanting winery a half mile south of the Winemaker’s House. The decades went by and the new century found Beaulieu Vineyards snapping up more of the To-Kalon Vineyards. Meanwhile, up the valley San Francisco banker James K. Moffitt took over the Charles Krug Winery, the first operating winery of the Napa valley, and carried the idle winery through the dark years of prohibition. Impressed by their passion and vision, Moffitt sold the Krug Winery to Cesare Mondavi and his two sons, Peter and Robert. It was Robert Mondavi’s dream of making wines in the Napa Valley that would rival and surpass the great wines of the world that lead him to strike out on his own and to the To-Kalon Vineyards. He knew that to make the finest wines in the world, he would have to crush grapes from the finest vines of the valley, so in 1966 he staked his future to the vines of To-Kalon.
