Location: Kawela, North Shore Oahu, Oahu, Hawaii, USA
Accommodations: Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-3)
Keywords: Separate Entrance Unit
Recommended by and listed in Lonely Planet Guides: Hawaii and Oahu.
Our house is located on the north shore of Oahu, less than two miles west of Sunset Beach, the world famous surfing beach, and about one and a half miles west of Backyards (Velzyland), which is an equally well-known windsurfing site. A lesser known and uncrowded surfing area is offshore from our property. We are directly on the ocean, with year-round sunsets, and whales passing by during the winter months. The house sits on a flat, rocky reef, with sandy beaches a very short walking distance to the left and to the right. An offshore reef protects us from the pounding waves, and provides safe swimming and snorkeling. Honolulu is a one-hour drive away, but we are also directly on the bus line.
The vacation unit is in a separate wing of the main house and has its own private entrance. It shares a large deck overlooking the water, with tables, lounge chairs, and a small charcoal barbecue. It is an upstairs-downstairs arrangement, with a large, airy bedroom upstairs, and a small sitting room and bath (with tub and shower) below. Both rooms have ocean views.
An inclined staircase leads to the bedroom, which contains a king-size bed (convertible to two large single beds, if desired), a chest of drawers, and hang-up space.
The downstairs sitting room contains a couch which can convert to a single bed, and a TV. There is NO KITCHEN OR STOVE, but the downstairs room has a small refrigerator, a microwave, single burner hot plate, coffee maker, toaster, and small, fold-away TV tables. There are also dishes and utensils, adequate for light cooking, using the bathroom sink for cleanup. We also have a washing machine and dryer available for guest use. As with many other ocean front homes on the North Shore, we are located on the around-island highway, so there is some vehicle noise in the bedroom at certain times. It is not heard in the sitting room or on the deck.
Because the sitting room is small, the unit is most suitable for two persons, but we will rent to three people who don't mind the lack of privacy. Because of the possible hazard with the inclined staircase (see photo), we cannot accept small children. We provide a continental breakfast within the unit for the first three days (muffins, fruit juice, tea and coffee).
We require a five night minimum stay.

Wonderful Stay!

My husband and I stayed here for 8 nights last week (July 2011), and we had a wonderful time. The view from the unit is amazing, I couldn't have asked for a better ocean view. We loved listening to the sound of the waves; although the traffic noise from the bedroom occasionally drowned it out (and sometimes disturbed my sleep). Ann and her husband were lovely hosts. We did have a problem with bugs (earwigs I believe?) the second night of our stay in the bedroom. We let Ann know and she immediately took care of the problem. The unit was a bit small but perfect for my husband and I for that length of stay. We didn't spend too much time in the unit since there are so many beautiful beaches nearby. Overall I would be happy to stay again.

Ann, It's Kelley's sister Dio. Hi! Haven't seen you since the UNFORGETABLE time you saved our precious Labrador from her wandering on the highway, after being stolen from us by a neighbor. That was about 1984? My little girl, who was 5 then is twenty eight now, lives in Washington and is coming to Turtle Bay for her wedding in Aug. Thought I could rent your place with my 9 yr. old granddaughter around Aug. 6th to Aug. 13 I think. How are you? And family? Dio O'Nan Eberling

I stayed here in December 06. I loved it! Waking up every day of my vacation to the sound of the ocean was just incredible. People give me shocked looks when I tell them I stayed there for $75 a night and show them the pictures. Unit is just as advertised, small and cozy. It was near enough to the action of the North Shore, yet not so close that it was noisy (since the Rip Curl Pro was taking place that week) Ann and Richard were wonderful hosts. I can't wait to go back!

We recently stayed here. Had a great time. This location is NOT Kewela Bay, however, and we were disappointed to have been missled. It was a great location-just not what we expected and not as listed. Kay Graton
Owner response:This is due to a misunderstanding due to the way the website managers sort the listings. VRBO places our unit in an area they call "Kawela," not Kawela Bay. Nowhere in our own part of the listing do we make any reference to being on Kawela Bay. We have contacted VRBO about making a change to avoid future misunderstandings.

My wife and I stayed here in February 05. You could not ask for a better location. Sleeping and hearing the waves crash all night could not be better. Space is small, but the location and owners are great. Will try again

WELCOME TO OUR GUEST BOOK Please feel free to enter any comments that you may have regarding your stay with us. We value what you have to say, to include any suggestions for improvement of our facilities or services. Some guests have suggested adding a full kitchen to our unit. While we agree this would be a big improvement, current building code restrictions do not allow adding another complete kitchen to our home. We find that most guests manage quite well with the small fridge, microwave, hot plate, toaster, and coffee maker. They also enjoy taking advantage of the different types of restaurants located within a 15-minute drive.
