The home sits on a wooded one acre mountainside lot approximately 1.5 miles from the ski lift by way of main roads snowplowed by the Village. For snow-shoers in the winter and hikers/bikers in warmer seasons, the home has greenbelt access literally across the street connecting to the system of miles of trails. Trail maps available at the village information center. Redwood decks front and back with a master balcony in back; all for relaxing and taking in the views of the forest and its wildlife. A soaring wall of windows bring the outdoors in to you. Let it snow, let it snow...
The style of furnishings reflect the enchantment of the high mountain country with the Native American influence of the southwest. It beckons you to put another log on the fire and settle in for some down time. Two bedrooms down with a queen bed in each share a full bath. The upstairs master bedroom has a king size bed and full bath with a private balcony and staircase to back deck. The upstairs loft has a futon that makes a double bed as well as a desk and bench, it's a great spot for reading a book or checking your email. All 3 bedrooms and living room have DISH satellite TVs and DVD's. VCR's are also in living room and master bedroom. All bedrooms, loft and staircase are carpeted. The living and dining rooms are hardwood floors. Slate flooring is in kitchen, breakfast bar, hall, laundry room and bathrooms. The large laundry room has washer/dryer and plenty of space to store ski boots to keep them warm overnight.
The kitchen is fully stocked so you can cook for the weekend or a month and not want for anything in the way of utensils, from slow cooker to griddle, you've got it all. Dishes, glassware and flatware for at least 12 are in the cabinets. A gas grill is stored in the breezeway on rollers since it is 'for outdoor use only'.
Our entry to the home brings you into the enclosed breezeway (we are calling it our 'saloon') with fun signs and memorabilia on the cedar walls. With redwood floors and some indoor/outdoor carpet, it serves as the entrance, the mud room and a fun place to gather. There is a rack for 8 pairs of skis on the wall, a long bench, chairs and a 4 seat pub table for watching the world go by or a friendly game of cards. Firewood for the wood burning living room fireplace is stored in the stairwell to garage.
Whether you are here for winter sports or a respite from the summer heat, the Angel Fire area is a great place to use as your home base to explore our beautiful Enchanted Circle of northern New Mexico.
DAY TRIPS The New Mexico Vietnam Memorial Stop by the memorial on the hill near the flashing yellow light on the edge of town. A difficult time, is explained well through exhibits in the museum. The memorial in this beautiful valley is educational, moving and should not be missed.
Eagle Nest It is about 10 miles from AF to Eagle Nest with its local shops and eateries, Eagle Nest State Park and lake. Fishing, boating and camping for the outdoors folks. Shops and restaurants all in walking distance on the main street.
Red River 30 miles from AF is the old west mining and skiing destination of Red River, popular with the tourists with plenty see and do. Several quaint old buildings have wooden sidewalks. All kinds of merchants from souvenir shops to art galleries, eateries and bars line the main street. The Red River flows through the middle of town. Bobcat Pass ( you go over it on the road between Red River and Eagle Nest) has horseback riding, cowboy chuck-wagon style dinners with storytelling and music in the summer months. Snowmobiles and ATV's available for rent to explore the Bob Cat Pass area.
Taos and the Taos Pueblo Taos is one of the oldest human settlements in the nation and is only 25 miles from Angel Fire. The beauty of its location, the culture of the Native Americans with their pueblos and churches drew Georgia O'Keefe and other artists to the Taos area creating an artist colony that is still thriving today. Artists often did and still do speak of the 'light in Taos' with reverence. You must see Taos, where the sky, high desert and Sangre de Christo mountains converge and you too will understand the enchanted qualities of the Taos light. With its stunning location, culture, shops, dining, renowned art galleries and museums it is no wonder Taos was recently voted as the #2 top small town in America in May 2012 issue of Smithsonian Magazine. Mother nature's handywork is all around you. A masterpiece is just a few miles out of town on the road to Santa Fe - the Rio Grande River Gorge. Park you car and walk out on the bridge. It's awesome and you can even go whitewater rafting and fishing in the area. You can't see it all in one day.
The High Road to Taos This is a breathtaking route from Taos to Santa Fe through high mountain villages. A route you should not miss if you are in the area. Check your highway map for details.
Santa Fe It's 90 miles from AF to Santa Fe - voted in the top 10 travel destinations in America by Conde Nast Travel for 20 years and recently ranked #2 best shopping in the USA. That's for anything from art to antiques, clothing to fine jewelry. There are too many art galleries and museums and sights to list here. A great day trip is driving the 90 miles from AF to Santa Fe via Taos then returning from Santa Fe to Taos via the Taos High Road, then on the AF. You will see the Rio Grande River Gorge along the highway from Taos to Santa Fe.
Angel Fire is a great home base for exploring the Enchanted Circle. Check the village visitors center at the corner across from Lowe's Valley Market for maps and all kind of literature on area attractions.
STAY TRIPS If you're not feeling like leaving town, you'll have to choose between things you can do in the village, like shopping, eating, hiking, biking, riding our new zip lines on the mountain, ride your ATV in the 300,000+ acre Kit Carson National forest just outside the village, go horseback riding, fishing, golfing or wildlife spotting. Oh, and since it might be winter, we have skiing (downhill and cross country), snow shoeing, snowboarding, tubing and snowmobiling. By the way, you are not required to even leave the house...until check out time.
Starry Starry Night - at 8700 feet elevation on the deck, you will be able to reach up and almost touch the stars. So many stars that you never see in the city. It is fascinating to see the Milky Way without a telescope. It stimulates your imagination and curiosity. It can make you feel like a child again pondering your very existence and place in the universe.
We hope you'll see why we chose Angel Fire as our vacation home location and look forward to letting you feel the enchantment at our Starry Starry Night Mountain Chalet.

Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: We are the home owners, Scott and Cindy Walling pictured at the annual Mardi Gras Parade in Angel Fire.
We have owned this property since 2006 and have used a local vacation rental management company until September 2012 when we listed here on VRBO. We may be short on reviews now, but we have clients who have returned many times through the years. We currently live in Grapevine Texas where Cindy is a school teacher and I own a real estate inspection business. We met at college at The University of North Texas. This is our dream home. We hope if you stay a few days at Starry Starry Nights Chalet, you will want to write us a review.
Why the Owner Chose Angel Fire: It took us years to decide between a beach house, lake house or mountain getaway for our vacation home. We chose Angel Fire because once we come here, we never want to go back to reality/work/flat land/searing summers (fill in the blank). The Enchanted Circle has much to offer, but Angel Fire is a destination unto itself. We think we got it right. We hope you think so too.
The Unique Benefits at this Chalet: We actually bought a lot up the mountain to build our dream mountain home. We visited friends who were the previous owners of this home several times and enjoyed all the wildlife that is part of the surroundings. Deer, elk and even black bears live in this forest. Then our friends decided to build a larger log home. We were now weighing the decision on whether to buy this home we had visited so many times and were truly smitten with, or to go through the pains of building. As house guests one misty evening, my wife and I were on the back deck when a deer and her fawn walked right by, stopped and looked at us then continued grazing. It was the sign we were looking for and the rest is history.
