Kawela bungalow description
Our home is listed on the Historic Register of Hawaii. It was built in 1910, and is the oldest home on the famous North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Our home sits right on the beach, on private and beautiful Kawela Bay, 1 mile from the Turtle Bay Resort.
This darling home is the crown jewel of Kawela Bay as it sits right in the middle of the crescent beach, and as it was built over 100 years ago, it is the only house closest to the water.
Kawela Bay is calm even in the winter months, as there is a protective reef at the entrance to the bay, although we also have a nice break outside the bay that is perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding and surfing. But inside the bay is wonderfully calm and safe for children.
The property consists of two homes for your use. It is perfect for several families to share, as it will sleep up to 16 people. Perfect for a family reunion! Cozy and cute, you will feel at home in paradise. And once through the gates of this private community, you will leave the world behind and feel immersed in the colors of the turquoise water and baby blue skies. The large sea turtles come onto the sand every nite, to sleep right in front of the house. Yes, it's paradise!
The original cottage is quaint and charming. When we moved here, I told the realtor that I wanted something that represented 'old Hawaii'. When he showed us this home, I knew it was the one. This home had been in the previous owner's family for years and years, and will be in our family for generations. It is the kind of home that is a treasure, and we feel blessed each morning when we watch the sun rise from our bedroom windows.
The main cottage has a master bedroom with a queen bed, another bedroom with two twin beds. The dining table seats 10 easily and we've pulled up chairs for many more. The kitchen is charming and warm. This is not a modern 'state of the art' fancy set up. It is for those families who wish to live from the heart. This is a comfortable and cozy family home.
About 30 feet from the original house is another cottage. This was built for our children and grandchildren when they come to visit. The cottage has 5 bedrooms, 3 baths. Two of those rooms have bunk beds. The upper floor of the cottage is where my art studio is located... and my large art table works well to sit around to play games. This living space is furnished with a sofa, chairs, a tv and a small refrigerator and microwave. This isn't a full kitchen as there is no stove or oven. This cottage is a great place for people to sleep and for children to play, and when our extended family of 16 is here, we always have our meals in the main cottage.
Kawela Bay is a private gated community. The North Shore is considered 'country' and on your drive to our home, you will pass black and white cows and sheep. When you enter the gate at Kawela Bay, you will turn down a country road and you will begin to feel like you have stepped back in time. Like you are coming home.
Kawela Bay is as perfect a bay as you would ever wish for! It is 1/2 a mile long, in a beautiful crescent shape. The bay is safe for swimming, year around ( even during the large surf in the winter time ) as it is protected by a reef. You can float on rafts and commune with the sea turtles that call our bay their home.
You can rent paddle boards in Haleiwa, which is about 20 minutes from us. This bay is a perfect place to paddle board. We have two kayaks with glass bottoms for your use and plenty of beach chairs and towels.
There is a fabulous forest of banyan trees just down the beach from the house that offers a beautiful walk to the Turtle Bay Resort, should you wish to have breakfast, lunch or dinner there...or play golf on their famous golf course. Many movies are filmed here. The latest being The Hunger Games.
It is not necessary to ever leave Kawela Bay, and you will find that the outside world just disappears when you are here, and only beauty and harmony exist.
Kawela Bay is located on the quiet north shore of Oahu, between Sunset Beach and Turtle Bay. Kawela Bay offers calm turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling and diving, and the only white sand beach on the North Shore open year round for swimming and sunbathing. Many consider it the North Shore's best beach, and it was used for the movie 'Joe vs. the Volcano,' and the 'Magnum P.I.' television series. Kawela Bay is also home to many giant sea turtles. It's often secluded, where one can walk for miles without seeing anyone else, except during winter weekends when the area does see a little more action during the World Surfing Championships. Most of the time, however, Kawela Bay remains an easy and laid back place to stay. You can walk the beach all the way to Turtle Bay, or drive to Sunset Beach to watch the surfers. The whole north shore provides lots of 'old Hawaii' flavor, yet also offers shopping and fine dining. Other recreational activities in the area include golf, hiking, biking, horseback riding, windsurfing and sailing. Haleiwa Town is just a 15-minute drive from Kawela, and Honolulu is approximately 48 miles away.
If you have any questions, please send us an email, and we would be happy to send you more photos.
Until then, we send you sweet aloha breezes. Mahalo!

Our family had a wonderful week here at this place last week. Our kids really enjoyed swiming and kayaking. And this is a prime spot to watch the July 4th fireworks from Turtle Bay resorts! An amazing place for vacationing in Oahu.

Our first holiday trip together!
Our first holiday trip together!
As children, my brothers and I were treated to a hawaiian vacation with our parents by our grandparents. After that, my parents were huge hawaii fans and made several trips to the islands after we kids started families of our own. We lost our father 11 years ago and unfortunately, lost our mother one year ago. It was my mother's wish that we travel to Hawaii as a family again. Due to busy lives, it did not happen before her death last year. I thought, what a great tribute to our parents, especially to honor our mother's wish, that we should plan this vacation. My brothers and their families were quick to agree. We had the privilage of renting the perfect property for this vacation beginning Christmas Day 2011 through New Year's Day 2012. The beautiful, peaceful surroundings of Kawela Bay are an absolute slice of heaven! With 14 in our family, there was plenty of sleeping space as well as common space for us to gather and share meals and be together. There were kayaks, paddle boards, masks and fins for us to explore the bay as well as hammocks to enjoy an energizing nap. If you want to visit the hustle and bustle of the city it was just a short drive away from the tranquility of this property. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to everyone traveling to Oahu and would rent this property again in a heartbeat for future visits! Thank you for sharing your piece of heaven with us!!

My family had the privilege of staying at this remarkable home over New Year's, 2005. The owner's description is perfect. The house and the second house are just what a large family needs. We felt as if we were in our own little paradise, with everything we needed. The owners made us feel so welcome and I sincerely hope that we can plan a trip there again in the near future.
