Kyoto is famous for having been the ancient capital of Japan, dating back over 1200 years. The sheer beauty of the temples, shrines, gardens and culture imbued within its boundaries makes Kyoto one of the most revered places in the world.

Shofu-an is one of Kyo Machiya Miyabi, a big Kyoto traditional house, and was designed and divided in three Machiya (Bairin-an, Shofu-an, Momiji-an) by renowed Kyoto based architect Geoffrey P. Moussas*. Shofu-an is being meticulously preserved with the traditional techniques that have been handed down for centuries. While sticking to tradition is important for the architect, updating the facilities, such as modern bath-shower room, high-tech toilet, kitchen, heating floor, are just as important to meet the present day needs of our selective clientele. The delicate balance between 'old and new' is what sets this apart.
Shofu-an is at the foot of Kiyomizu Temple, which is been designated a World Culture Heritage, and is very convenient for visiting by walking distance many others famous temples, shrines, downtown, and Gion, the most famous Geisha district!

Enjoy Kyoto and the distinctive features of local townhomes by staying in a real Machiya, feeling the natural way of living and the change of seasons which distinguishes Kyoto' s culture and its people.

*Geoffrey P.Moussas first became fascinated by traditional Japanese houses in Kyoto while studying for his master of architecture at MIT. Soon after graduation, he moved to Tokyo to work for some world’s best architects, such as Fumihiko Maki ( WTC tower 4, NY –present) and Yoshio Tanniguchi ( MoMA renovation NY, 2004.)He later moved to Kyoto to work for Nakamura Sotoji and gradually get involved in machiya restoration. As you can see from his past employment experience, he has experience not just in traditional Japanese architecture, but also works on modern projects throughout Japan and other countries.

City buses or rental bikes can take you to most famous sites in Kyoto within 30 minutes.

We had a wonderful stay at Shofu-an, and we loved the experience of staying in a house rather than a hotel. The location of the house cannot be beaten: it is walking distance from Gion and Ponto-Cho, the Kiyomizu temple, the Yasaka temple and beautiful Kenninji temple, and quite literally at the doorstep, there are buses going pretty much everywhere you need to go. Yet, the house is located in a very typical Kyoto residential neighborhood and you get a true feel of the Kyoto life! There are also convenience stores and little restaurants nearby. The house in itself is lovely and very well maintained. The ground floor area is tiny but sufficient to have family meals. The bathroom is lovely. Upstairs, the bedrooms are big and very comfortable. Our kids absolutely loved the tatami room, which sleeps 3 kids very comfortably. There is a tiny yet lovely terrace too. Roxana, who looks after the house, is a wonderful person: she is extremely kind and so helpful! She really made a difference for us and we cannot thank her enough. In a nutshell: we highly recommend the place!

The listing description and the photos accurately reflected the rental's appearance and we found a really clean and wellmaintained house. The administrator Roxana was all the time so helpful in answering to questions and she gave us very good suggestions for our stay. We can recommend this nice property to everybody and we hope to come back later. The building material is select and has a high quality!

Staying at Shofu-An made our week-long Kyoto trip truly wonderful and memorable. Our 3 kids enjoyed sleeping on the comfortable futton beds. The place came complete with kitchen amenities, and even some food supplies. Heating was adequate in all the rooms and bathroom. Location was great as the machiya was in a quiet neighborhood but is also walking - distance to a lot of temples and shrines. Convenience stores and quaint restaurants were all a block or two away. The Ashiya Steak House is just a few meters away - and we highly recommend this restaurant for its authentic Japanese ambience and Kobe beef. Its owner is a 75-year old lady whose sense of humor added much spark to our last evening in Kyoto. Shofu-An' s property manager, Roxana, was most gracious and helpful in assisting us with our itinerary needs, tips, suggestions on places to visit, and restaurants to try, even in helping us confirm our shuttle transfers. She made us feel very much welcome and at home. We all fell in love with Kyoto and will surely be returning to Shofu-An.

I hope you come back again in another season to take beautiful photos as you did during the cherry blossom and discover once more the beauty of this city that always has something to show to visitors.

The house was just gorgeous, and beautifully restored. You do need to be very respectful of this gorgeous little traditional house. It was a once in a lifetime experience to stay in this special house in the heart of the amazing temples of Kyoto, really central location to everything. Our Host Roxana, was absolutely amazing and nothing was too much trouble, she gave us a wealth of information and maps on arrival, collected our trash daily and even by luck arranged for us to meet some Geishas, although don't expect this during your stay, we where just extremely lucky and grateful to Roxana. Absolutely fabulous place, I highly recommend for those wanting a piece of Japanese History.

I am very grateful you appreciated the traditional feeling of Shofu-an, and the neighborhood as well. The Maiko (young Geisha) meeting was just a lucky coincidence to make your memories more special! Hope to see you again with your nice friends!

This was my 3rd trip to Kyoto, and by far the nicest place I've ever stayed there. We had a group of 5 people, and more than enough space for everybody. Everybody's jaw dropped when they walked in, and I looked like a hero for booking it. Lots of character. Great location, pristine, quick feedback from owner, and couldn't have asked for more. Walking distance to Kiyomizu, and a quiet block to the main road for a bus, taxi, convenient store, or restaurants. If there is a 4th trip to Kyoto in my future, I already know where I'll be staying.

About the owner: Message from the owner: Welcome to Kyoto! Our wooden houses were built in 1920'. Recently we renovated these houses by utilizing the original material as much as possible. Please enjoy the feeling of traditional Kyoto House!

                                  Why the Owner Chose Kyoto:
In this Kyoto typical house we could see a glitter of traditional atmosphere on the roof, wooden pillars, sliding doors or small garden inside the house. The Kyoto townhouse is called Machiya and this house strongly stimulated us to restore for living. Machiya used to be townhouses or shops for the merchants in the 17th century. Not only temples and shrines, but machiya stay is an attractive experience for all who want to know more about Kyoto' life style and its culture.

The Unique Benefits at this Townhome:
A 15 minutes walk will take you to the riverside of the Kamogawa. You can take a pleasent stroll along the river, or do shopping in the nearby Kawaramachi area, convenient during rainy days as the shopping streets are covered, like Nishiki food market street. A night life spot is Pontocho, a narrow lane with no cars, full of elegant restaurants, bars, and where you can have a glimpse of a Geisha or Maiko on the way or from an appointment. In the next street west side of Pontocho there is Kiyamachi, a very lively night zone where you can find many kinds of restaurants, bars, pubs and more... Enjoy Kyoto just walking from Shofu-an!
