Lofty and cozy…Outdoor Adventurers, the Avalanche Cabin is for you! As you approach it, you’ll leave the pavement behind for the last quarter mile. You’re 9700 feet above sea level (not a misprint!), a hundred feet from the Toiyabe National Forest and a mile from the Hoover Wilderness. 12,000 foot plus peaks, the East boundary of Yosemite National Park, and more than ten lakes and numerous creeks are within day hiking distance.
Ever think you were born in the wrong century? Sit on the porch or in the living room of the Avalanche Cabin and go back in time. Look at the lofty peaks and colossal humps of moraine and engage in a lively discussion of geology a la Muir and Matthes. Try to plan your routes up the peaks and ridges as Norman Clyde might have. Channel Audubon, Brewer, or Nuttall and watch and identify a wide variety of birds, chipmunks, squirrels, marmots, and even the occasional pika or bear. Or, go truly ancient on a moonless night as you gaze in wonder at an unbelievable star show.
Stunning views surround you in the yard, on the porch, and in every room of the house. To the East, you can see Great Basin mountains fifty miles away. To the south, a roche moutonee and gigantic glacial moraines lead your eyes up to lofty Mount Olsen. To the West and North, 12,400’ Dunderberg Peak and a forested patch of the glacial Virginia Creek valley lead your eyes Westward toward Yosemite National Park.
Presenting no uphill wall to the tremendous force of an avalanche, the Avalanche Cabin is a tested triumph of avalanche-resistant design. It’s carved into the slope of Dunderberg Peak snowshed style, with a colossally strong roof. Feel secure in the wood interior with mammoth posts and beams.
Built by the Ragland family and a few stalwart friends, the cabin is cozy (600 square feet) and off the grid. Large windows bring the gorgeous views in from the three downhill directions. Our small solar system powers super-efficient DC lights and a small AC inverter only: You can charge a phone or laptop, but leave your high-powered items at home.

We stayed in the cabin in mid October. The scenery was quite beautiful at that time of year, and the moutains around the cabin had a thin coat of snow on them. The cabin was just as cute as it looks in the pictures. The views from the windows will take your breath away! I spoke with the owner the day before we went to the cabin, and he was very friendly and helpful. The cabin was very clean and neat, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook our dinner and breakfast. The bed was very comfortable. The mountains around the cabin are a hiker's paradise. You can hike for many, many miles from the cabin's door, and visit a number of stunning lakes, or take a short drive to numerous other wilderness trailheads. This is also a great area top spend time if you like to fish. Nearby lakes and rivers are loaded with trout. The small towns of Lee Vining and Bridgeport are nearby, and both have nice restaurants. I would recommend this cabin to anyone who enjoys spending time in the mountains.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, pet owners, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

My wife and I stayed at the avalanche cabin on our honeymoon and it was spectacular! The views from the cabin are phenomenal and the recreation options are endless. We hiked up a little peak above Virginia lakes one day and drove down to Clark Canyon for some rock climbiing the next. But our favorite part was probably just hanging out in the cabin enjoying the views (try to go on a full moon...the moonrise was one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen).Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

My husband and I stayed at the Ragland's cabin for a wonderful and relaxing long weekend last month. The cabin is very comfortable, and well appointed. We had a great time cooking in the kitchen, and the outside fire pit is a nice extension of the living space. The views from the house are truly grand, and up close it's fun to watch all the tiny chipmunks running around in the rocks. One morning a weasle ran right across the front porch. We were able to id the little guy as the cabin is well stocked with natural history books. There are great hiking trails and lakes for fishing. A beatuiful setting. We will definitely go back!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

We we able to use the cabin as a romantic weekend get-away while the kids were away. There is so much to see within a short drive; Bodie, Mono Lake, June Lake, Mammoth, Hotsprings to name a few, and that is just if you want to stay within the mainstream, otherwise the possibilities are endless. This cabin has, by far, the best view of any place that I have stayed. It is simply a matter of opening your eyes while your head is still on the pillow to bestow the glorious sunrise that is unique every time. It is a place where relaxation is the theme of the day & a time that you will never forget.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
