- Saugatuck's primary source of revenue stems from tourism - though only 1,000 individuals call Saugatuck their year-round home, the population of the town swells to nearly 3,000 in the summer. Saugatuck is a prime summer weekend getaway destination for residents of Chicago, Grand Rapids and Detroit areas and many guests are attracted to the many Bed and Breakfasts in the area. In 2010, Saugatuck came in fourth in Budget Travel Magazine's ten coolest towns in America. In town, attractions include the many art galleries (over a dozen), small, independent shops, and restaurants, such as the Butler (named after the founder of the town, William Butler), Marro's Italian Restaurant, The Elbo Room, Coral Gables, and the Mermaid Bar & Grill. The Saugatuck Chain Ferry departs from Wicks Park, near the Star of Saugatuck, a large paddle-wheel boat that gives daily tours of the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan. There are art and music festivals throughout the year. Other attractions include the nearby town of Douglas, Saugatuck's sister city, and the above mentioned Oval Beach. Saugatuck's historic churches contribute to a vibrant community while preserving some of the oldest buildings in town. The oldest of these churches is First Congregational Church, founded in 1860. Since the 1970s the Saugatuck and neighboring Douglas have been popular as a tourist destination for gay and lesbian tourists from the Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Grand Rapids area as well as other Midwestern urban areas. It has even been nicknamed by some as the Provincetown of the Midwest....moreless

A Perfect Trip
A Perfect Trip
We had a wonderful stay at the Bunkhouse. Kevin, the owner, has created a very unique, welcoming and relaxing space, stocked with all the amenities that make any vacation complete. We immediately noticed that the place was impeccably clean. The gardens surrounding the house were beautiful with several well-situated spots outdoors to relax, and sitting in the hot tub at night under the stars with a glass of wine was the icing on the cake! We were able to walk most anywhere we wanted to go in town and the dunes/beaches were just minutes away in the car. Kevin even had dog treats, bowls and a large crate for those bringing their “children with fur” along on the trip. Our dog loved being able to walk the neighborhoods and play on a nearby dog beach. We would definitely recommend the Bunkhouse to anyone wanting a relaxing getaway.

Owner response: J,R and my new buddy Piper, Greeting new faces can be a bit scary, especially when I open the front door to BUNKHOUSE. Is it what the guest thought it would be? Was the description on target? Do they like my hair? I actually am nervous on those first encounters because I demand perfection of myself and BUNKHOUSE is a part of me. The saving grace for my jitters always comes with 4 legs and a wagging tail. Even doggy kisses greet me and help break the ice with intro formalities. If the pet has amenities (and why shouldn't they) my work is half over...lol In your case, I was greeted with three smiling faces and I felt as though long lost friends had come to visit. BUNKHOUSE has never intended to be a monetary structure, but a joyous vacation home to share with others while I am lucky enough to be here enjoying Saugatuck/Douglas for the season. It's a great feeling knowing people leave with good vibes in their suitcases. 2013 has been a season of great fun and joy...2014 has big shoes to fill. Many thanks and remember,"If I wouldn't stay at BUNKHOUSE, why should you?" Cowboy Kevin
Wonderful get away
Wonderful get away
My husband, our two dogs and I shared this lovely cottage for 4 wonderful nights in May. Kevin has taken great care to make sure his guests have everything they need, including three different size dog bowls for the furry guests. The gardens surrounding the cottage were lovely with several outdoor seating options where you can relax, read a book and have a glass of wine or cup of coffee. The hot tub is in back, with a privacy fence surrounding the area. We took full advantage of the hot tub during our visit. There is a full kitchen and a grill, so we enjoyed cooking some healthy, affordable meals during our stay. I think the kitchen is better stoced than mine at home. The cottage is about a mile walk from downtown Saugatuck, which was fine for us. It is a short drive from the state park, which has very nice hiking trails and was not crowded in early May in spite of the lovely weather. I see Kevin has updated his description of the cottage to say it is an open floor plan. We did not realize this when we booked the Bunkhouse. We had invited another couple to join us but it is not really appropriate for two couples unless they don't need privacy. It is perfect for one couple and our friends were happy to join us for the day. The Bunkhouse is a wonderful cottage in a great area of MI. We would love to come back. Thanks Kevin!

Owner response: Cowpokes, I appreciate you taking the time to review BUNKHOUSE. I am thrilled you had a great time and I hope you will visit again. My season is almost over and back to Clayton I will go for my R and R...lol I will be back starting May 2014 with the same mission statement; "If I wouldn't stay at BUNKHOUSE, why would you"? Thank you for making my "2013" wonderful.
Unique and Charming
Unique and Charming
What a find! Very unique property. The gardens are beautiful and charming. The back garden with hot tub, grill, and patio table was a favorite place to hang out during the stay. We brought our dogs with us and they enjoyed the gardens as well. There is a nice paved trail across the street that is great for walking dogs. House was VERY clean and Kevin seems to have thought of everything with this stay.

Owner response: Once again, our four legged family wins out...My guests have been so thoughtful with their pets and what pets can do when out of their element. Many thanks to everyone for treating BUNKHOUSE like it was their cottage. I realize that the "open concept" isn't for everyone, but it certainly works well for the pets....lol It's hard to believe "season" for Bunkhouse ends in 7 weeks. Thanks for making the start so enjoyable...Cowboy Kevin
Home away from home!
Home away from home!
The Bunkhouse was part of a 'girlcation' with another overworked, under-appreciated Mom. I was a little hesitant when she told me it was an open floor plan, but when I got there, the cottage totally exceeded my expectations! It is fabulously eclectic and utterly adorable. Everything was clean and organized but comfortable. I never felt like I was 'staying' somewhere - it had all the amenities of home. I would LOVE for this to be our go-to girlcation destination every year. Thank you Kevin for your hospitality and kindness. You've done a beautiful job re-creating the space! Be sure to visit the Art Barn - you'll love it!

Owner response: Kristy and Mara, A mom's job is not an easy one. I am glad that BUNKHOUSE gave you a few days to just be "girls" and not have any responsibilities. I hope the biggest decision you had to make was how late to sleep in...LOL It was a pleasure meeting both of you and you look far too young to have teenagers. I hope that your absence made them realize how much "Mom does" to make the corporation called a "family" run smoothly. So consider Bunkhouse your very own getaway when the walls start closing in. Don't worry, the kids and husbands need to be reminded how much "Mom's" do. I only worry about the red towels in with the whites...pink will open their eyes...lol Many thanks for my beautiful owl. I will cherish it and have set it with a pencil drawing of an owl in the Bunkhouse. You both are very special ladies...I am a lucky cowboy indeed!
There are a vast amount of accommodation choices in Saugatuck and boy did I get lucky. I am an overworked, unappreciated mom/wife that needed some time away. Kevin was so generous opening the bunkhouse to me for the whole week. The visit started perfectly with Kevin greeting me and showing me around his abode. The gardens are beautiful and beckoned to me daily to take my book out and read...I got through 2 whole books. The kitchen and bathroom were well stocked with anything you'd need and possibly forgot. The bed was super comfy and the leather furniture was the perfect choice for lounging on in this Bunk House. The short walk to town was very doable and wasn't too intimidating for the out of shape visitors. His recommendation for the best pizza was right on the dot (Back Alley Pizza in Douglas) and his directions to the "free" beach made visiting the beach multiple times possible. The bunkhouse is perfect for the romantic weekend you may need with your hubby or the perfect girls shopping destination. I got home earlier today and am ready to schedule my return visit. I've been to MANY VRBO homes in the past and this is my all-time favorite vacation rental hands down. Reading previous visitor's reviews have always been an important part of my lodging selection. Read no further than this review...schedule with Kevin right away...you won't be sorry. I'm so fortunate to be able to call Kevin a friend and am sure that we will stay in contact in the future. You won't regret making the Bunk House your choice when visiting this part of Michigan.

Owner response: Mara and Kristy, Having perfect guests makes a host's responsibilities easy and enjoyable. The BUNKHOUSE is a very special place that attracts special guests who want to unwind, let the grass tickle their toes (especially if they have had a mani/pedi at our great day spa downtown). I am a lucky cowboy indeed.... Many thanks and yes, we will stay in touch...I have to "oogle" your hand made art next visit. I had no idea we had an art barn where you make art from ceramics to jewelry. WHAT FUN! Happy Trails, Cowboy Kevin
An Absolute Gem!
An Absolute Gem!
My husband and I have stayed at several properties around Saugatuck over the years - motels, B&B's, vacation rental homes & cottages - and can honestly say we're done looking, the Bunk House is our favorite spot. It's cute as can be inside and out and is surrounded by gorgeous flower gardens. The whole vibe is very peaceful yet full of whimsy. The pictures here don't adequately convey how special it is. It's just "wow!" The owner/host, Kevin, is delightful and did an outstanding job of making sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable for our 3-day stay. It was just three of us; my husband, me and our medium-sized dog but the Bunk house can easily accommodate 6 adults who get along well and don't need a ton of privacy. The Bunk House is basically a very large studio apartment with a smaller annex. The larger room sleeps 4 in 2 areas very cleverly separated from but in view of the main living area. The annex sleeps an additional 2 very comfortably. The kitchen area was well equipped with everything you would need to cook in if you choose - no lack of good restaurants in town though. There's one full bath and another half bath. Additionally there are a full size washer & dryer, privacy-fenced area off the back of the house with a nice hot tub, bicycles available for your use, cable TV, comfortable leather furniture, and lots of seating space. It's nicely decorated, and most important, very clean! A great place to be with friends & family. The Bunk House sits on a two-lane street about a 10 minute walk north of downtown Saugatuck. The speed limit is slow and traffic noise is minimal - especially at night when it is very quiet. There is a sidewalk that takes you all the way into town so the walk is comfortable and safe. A big plus - our dog was welcome. What a treat!. Kevin takes care to ensure pets brought have everything they need for a good vacation including a large wire crate in the living area complete with a dog bed, bowls, treats and cleaning supplies just in case. There is a local dog park just a few minutes drive where your dog can play off-leash. We enjoy low-keyed vacations and this was the perfect spot for us - walking, good food, shopping, just relaxing - but there are many other attractions the area offers if you're looking for more excitement. The Bunk House gave us the peace & quiet and space we wanted with easy access to everything. Thank you, Kevin, for sharing this gem. We hope to see you again in the fall.

Owner response: Cowpokes and my "almost" buddy Guinness, OK, I checked you in so I know you were here, but you left no trace of being here when I came to do house keeping. Thank you, thank you for treating BUNKHOUSE like your own home. It is of course your private home getaway anytime you feel like some "attitude adjustment". Thank you for fixing my flapper...I hate it when my flapper doesn't flap...don't you? Also I appreciate your honesty about fragrance inside being a bit heavy...Before arrival now, I will pull plug ins to calm any strong floral scent. Yes. Cowboy Bob, I will follow your suggestion on the sealing of windows...very helpful tip... It makes my goal of being the best little "BUNKHOUSE" the VERY BEST Getaway one could ask for. To know that being in BUNKHOUSE has successfully made many guests take the time to review makes me proud to be your host. I hope I never let any guest down...all situations can be corrected. Many thanks Cowpokes and give Guinness a big hug for me... Happy Trails, Cowboy Kevin
My husband and I stayed at the Bunkhouse for our 1 year wedding anniversary and it was such a perfect place to stay. We even brought our little puppy, Nina, and she loved it! From the moment you walk in, you will be overwhelmed with a cozy, warm, homey feel. The Bunkhouse is kept in perfect condition and was amazingly decorated. The owners care about the bunkhouse and it shows. You will walk around and just keep finding more and more that you didn't discover before. Our favorite feature was the "smart" fireplace that you can use to keep the bunkhouse at your preferred temperature, the hot tub that was clean, relaxing, and private, the open floor plan, decor, and more. Everything was there we needed. The owner is so generous, they really do treat this home like their own.. and so will you. It's a must for visiting Saugatuck, MI. There was a house phone, Flat screen TV and so many channels, DVD player, tons of blankets and pillows, fully functional kitchen, every thing you could need down to laundry detergent, towels and more. We spent each day in a different city antiquing, drinking, going out to eat, shopping, and hiking. This is in the PERFECT location, you are right off of two major roads and can get anywhere from here, and even walk into downtown Saugatuck. We spent 5 days in the Bunkhouse and we were sad to leave. We will be recommending the bunkhouse to all of our friends and family for getaways. If you want to have a good stay in Saugatuck, have privacy, and feel like you have your own home for getaway, stay at the Bunkhouse.. oh and did I mention the owner was awesome yet? .. because he is.. nothing like staying somewhere .. like this. Much love from ~ Meagan, Jason, and Nina! ~

Owner response: Cowpokes, Well, what can I say? You've made Cowboy Kevin blush. Your wonderful comments make all my efforts worth every second I spend working on "BUNKHOUSE". I have always believed that you treat guests like part of your own family and that has made me a very nice extended family. Saugatuck/Douglas makes me happy and I know our little slice of heaven makes guests happy. I am a lucky Cowboy indeed. As my mission statement says; If I wouldn't stay at "BUNKHOUSE" why would you? Happy Trails, Kevin
My wife and I just recently celebrated her Birthday at the "Bunkhouse"... And what a lovely celebration it was! First, the location is perfect... Secluded, yet within a reasonable walk (or in our case, a quick bike ride), to beautiful downtown Saugatuck. The bunkhouse itself has every amenity one could imagine... And even some you can't. It's also much larger than the pictures suggest. Sparkling clean! The garden areas were wonderful even in early Spring... I can only imagine how beautiful they will be in Summer. Oh... did I mention how amazing the hot tub was? And Kevin? Well let me just say he's one of the nicest guys you will ever meet... Plus, a really great designer and "innkeeper"! Thanks Cowboy Kevin for a great stay!! We will definitely be back. :-)

Owner response: Cowboy Frank and "Birthday Girl" aka Mary, Your "to do" list is finished...nail be gone and an easier recycle waste can to use inside. "Sparkling Clean" is the way I want it for my guests. As I submit this, my pillow covers and mattress pads are being washed and BLEACHED. I dare CSI to bring a black light into "BUNKHOUSE". LOL You three were a joy and my only regret is that the pooch wanted union wages to pull the plow on the back forty...I think we tell them too much....ok, maybe I fall a little gaga when it comes to animals. I certainly couldn't have Mary do it...it was after all her birthday. Please come visit again...it was my pleasure. Remember, If I wouldn't stay at "BUNKHOUSE", why would you?

Perfect Getaway for all reasons & seasons!
Amazing! We needed a getaway from our busy lives and some well deserved alone time and we got just that! May I say that I've been to a lot of different places in Saugatuck, and this is by far the coziest, cleanest, and has absolutely everything you need! if you wanted to just stay in or if you wanted to explore, just bring a toothbrush, clothes and food if you want to cook. Although, Saugatuck has great places to eat. Kevin is absolutely darling and we had just an amazing time having cocktails in the back patio and great conversation. We are already planning our next trip see you soon!!!

Owner response: There is a funny saying but usually in sort of a :"Well get You Attitude" is noted with it, but I am saying it with fondness for you two and the rest of the "cowpokes" that have stayed at BUNKHOUSE. All of you have been wonderful, "and a bag of chips too". I am the luckiest Cowboy (imitation or not) in this great country of the"United States of America". I have learned through so many of our wonderful conversations that our glasses are "more than half full" and we all have our crazy "QUIRKS" and we can learn these wonderful issues by putting that #*#* cell phone away and opening a bottle of wine and get to know our fellow man and woman. Wow, to laugh, to have deep thoughts without judgement, and yes, even to cry a little. BUNKHOUSE is all about "Attitude Adjustment" and walking barefoot and having grass tickle your toes under a sparkling blue sky. Going for that walk with your loved ones and holding hands...SIMPLICITY... Many thanks to all my "cowpokes" who have opened my eyes and made every bit of my job of keeping my guests "happy" so very rewarding. Happy Trails, Cowboy Kevin
Bunkhouse far exceeded my expectations! The photos are a good representation, but don't do the Bunkhouse justice. It is absolutely charming, warm and cozy, and IMMACULATE! You will feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Kevin is a most gracious host and will orient you not only to the house, but the local area. Enjoy a short walk into town, a long walk with the dog at the nearby State Park, a good book by the fire, or a long soak in the hot tub. Cable tv and wireless internet add to the convenience factor. The Bunkhouse is well equipped for cooking, entertaining, or just relaxing. The beds are very comfortable, and the variety of seating areas provide lots of opportunities to unwind, and virtually all have fireplace views. I look forward to many future stays at the Bunkhouse- both in and off-season.

Owner response: Katherine and the "Humph" my new four legged buddy, It is not often that a guest makes me a guest in "BUNKHOUSE". Your dinner was superb and conversation was spectatular. It is also easy to talk to an intelligent beautiful woman sitting across the table...not to worry everyone...Humphrey made sure I was a perfect gentleman ...his eyes never left me once... the mood killer...lol I am so glad we met and look forward to many more walks with the "Humph" and his truly beautiful inside in and out partner in crime... I also want to say thank you for making BH your home. When I arrived to clean and straighten, I felt like I was in a "Fellini" film. Everything washed, made, left overs for me...etc. I am a lucky cowboy!

Why the Owner Chose Saugatuck:
A few short years ago, I decided to open the Bunkhouse. When I was looking around the area, I found plenty of fancy B&B's, noisy roadside motels, basic hotel chains, and lots of different kinds of weekly rental properties. Don't get me wrong, all of them were very nice, but none of them fit my vision of a perfect place that I would want to spend a week with family or friends. I was looking for the solitude and comfort of my own private retreat. I wanted a place where I could (if I had any) let my hair down. I wanted a place where I could knock the sand off my feet after a day at the beach, sip a glass (or two) of fine local wine, and relax in a private hot tub. I wanted a place that let me be me without having to conform to someone Else's standard of what a 'vacation' should look like. I wanted a place where I could choose how I wanted to unwind.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I've turned the Bunkhouse into exactly the place I was looking for! It's a casual, comfortable, relaxing retreat from the stress of everyday life. The Bunkhouse is an attitude as much as it's a destination... and that's exactly my intention! Everything about the Bunkhouse says, 'Relax, kick back, and slow down for a few days.' Now, don't misunderstand me. To me, casual comfort doesn't mean 'sloppy mess.' I take an enormous amount of pride in what I've created in the Bunkhouse. The space is beautifully appointed with plush bedding including fine cotton sheets, overstuffed pillows, and down comforters. The kitchen is fully updated and modern. I've filled it with touches of home including tasteful dishes, fine stemware, and matching utensils. The outdoor hot tub is sanitized and prepared for each visit. I even supply beach towels and chairs for your trip to the beach. The Bunkhouse is the picture of MY ideal Saugatuck vacation retreat. I LOVE this place. Because I know that if I wouldn't love staying here, why would you?
