From the moment we arrived, this was perfect. Blackberries to pick along the driveway, bees buzzing amongst the wild fuschia, gorgeous sunrises... Our family LOVES Pier Cottage. It is an incredible place to stay - we were there for 2 weeks in early September. Gathering yourself to get there is one thing, but BEING there is reward enough. From the excellent facilities (3 BR, 2BA, ocean right out the door) to the friendliness of the people (thank you, Susannah and Katherine), it all made for a memorable stay. There's a row boat you can use to get across the harbor mouth to a beautiful sandy beach (try at low tide, it's easier). The cottage was clean and warm - internet worked just fine and the large kitchen had just about anything you'd need. Walk out the door and there's a stone beach, which our daughter clambered on several times daily to see what the tide left for her. Behind the cottage is another stone beach, also perfect for learning about tides, nature, and more. There's a fireplace to add to the atmosphere, laundry facilities, and thick stone walls to keep the rain out! We learned about local markets (Kenmare, Sneem) and got glorious fresh fish and veggies for our meals. We traveled to Skellig Chocolate Company, and Portmagee for more fish. We enjoyed Derrynane beach (and horseback riding there, with Eagle Rock Equestrian Center), and Derrynane House (home of the Liberator, Daniel O'Connell). We got THE BEST croissants in the world from Jane Urquhart, right up the drive at Westcove Bakery. It was wonderful. Only an hour from Kenmare or Killarney, Pier Cottage is ideally located to explore Co Kerry - but beware, the roads are tiny and winding! Mostly, we preferred to stay home and just absorb the beauty of the place. Westcove harbor has many small fishing and sailboats, some go out daily. There are seals out from shore on a rock, so find the binoculars - they are cool! We LOVE Pier Cottage and highly recommend it. It would be perfect for a family or larger family gathering (rent both ends). Although it is an hour's drive to larger cities, for those families that just want to absorb the beauty of Ireland, this is the place. There is plenty to do locally, and plenty to do in your own back yard here. I can't recommend this place highly enough - unlimited stars! Some photos I shared are here: http://www.wanderingeducators.com/accommodations/short-term/life-pier-cottage-co-kerry-ireland.htmlRecommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
