Property description

This old dry stone walled house is full of original charm and character, with wooden beams, tiled floors and a stone staircase worn by thousands of feet over the centuries. Completely private, but on the edge of a typical and unspoilt village, it offers the best of both worlds. All the conveniences you need are to be found in the village, so no need to drive everywhere to do your shopping or see a bit of local culture.
There are 4 bedrooms, two in the main house, the master bedroom comprising a super king size bed, and en suite shower room and toilet, the other comprising two single beds. The separate guest house contains two double bedrooms, one with a king size bed, the other with two single beds, both have en suite shower and toilet. The crowning glory of summer living is the roof terrace, situated on the flat roof of the house, with a tiled roof, but open on four sides. It is a truly magical experience snoozing on the Queen size bed under the full moon and stars and waking to the view of the village rooftops, it is like waking in the middle of a huge oil painting. A rarely needed mosquito net is provided for cool nighttime slumbers or warm summer afternoon siestas. There are no bathroom facilities on the roof terrace.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a 4 burner gas hob, Siemens oven, fridge/freezer, coffee machine, microwave, dishwasher and seating area for 6 or 8. There is also a small flat screen TV with satelliite reception and radio. Outside gas barbeque.The laundry room contains two other fridge/freezers and an 8 kg washing machine and dryer, as well as an iron etc.
The dining room boasts an antique grand piano, and leads to the downstairs bathroom with claw foot cast iron bath/shower and toilet.
Upstairs the sitting room is large and light, and is surrounded on both sides by terraces and seating areas. There is a flat screen TV, with satellite reception and radio, plus DVD player and an ipod base station.
The garden is a fully mature Mediterranean garden, with several areas of lawn, and some lovely water features. The meditation garden offers a shady spot for a bit of quiet contemplation. All terraces have eating areas, and plenty of comfortable seating. The wisteria walk leads up to the pool, completely private with stunning views over the entire valley below. The pool house has a fridge, dishwasher and toilet for the convenience of guests, and is fully equipped with cutlery, crockery etc, for lunch to be taken under the trees, before snoozing in one of the hammocks.

The village is located at the south west end of the island, just ten minutes drive from the popular fishing port of Puerto Andratx, the favorite summer dining haunt of the King and Queen of Spain, and many other notable VIPs. In the Puerto are found dozens of restaurants of every style and price, and the yacht club offers boat rentals and a sailing school for youngsters, as well as an excellent restaurant. There is a scuba diving and water sports school next door.

A short boat ride from the family beach resort of Sant Elm is the uninhabited island of Dragonera, a nature reserve and bird sanctuary, with scenic hikes and birdwatching, as well as wild flower spotting. The ten minute crossing in the old fishing boat ' Margarita' is part of the charm.

From the village unlimited walks radiate in all directions, offering days in the untouched wilderness of old rural Mallorca, ten minutes on foot from the house with no need for a car.

The city of Palma is only 30 minutes away, offering restaurants, shopping, and many tourist attractions, as well as night life and culture.

Heading north from the village, the coast road meanders along the most scenic and spectacular part of the island, through the Tramuntana mountains, now classifies as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to Deia, Valldemossa and on to Soller and Pollensa. There are many hidden villages in this area worth exploring at leisure, and lots of good pottery shops, antiques etc.

Local fiestas are strongly supported in the area, and no holiday would be complete without dancing to the pipes and drums with the locals in their traditional costume outside the village church in high summer.

This is a place where time has, mercifully, stood still, and where the sheep bells compete with the striking of the old church clock to while away the hours in this sleepy, forgotten corner of Europe' s most popular tourist destination. In ten minutes you can be lazing on one of the best beaches in the mediterranean, snorkeling in turquoise waters off Sant Elm, hiking into wild uninhabited countryside, or just sitting in a cafe watching the rest of the world go by. This is an oasis of peace and calm and rural charm. The village itself remains largely unchanged from former times, and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Tramuntana mountain range.

About the owner: I grew up in the beautiful county of Wiltshire, in rural England, and attended Wycombe Abbey School in Buckinghamshire, but spent all my holidays in Mallorca from the age of 8. I came to live in S' arraco aged 23, fresh out of University, planned to try it for six months, and am still here thirty-four years later!

Why the Owner Chose Mallorca:
My late husband purchased the property as a ruined shell in 1969, and rebuilt it himself with his own hands, with the help of three friends from the village. He loved it and lived in it for many years afterwards, and I have continued to do the same. It is very much our family home, and is much enjoyed by our extended family who visit from all over the world on a regular basis.
