Orcas house description
Accommodations: 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, livingroom, dining room, gourmet kitchen, media room (lite), playrooms, sauna, hot tub, decks with views, lots of closets, workshop, garages, outbuildings… (Comfortably sleeps 8, can sleep up to 10.)
This is a fabulous house on a wonderful island in one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world. It takes about 3 hours (drive and ferry) to get there from Seattle. Or, you can take a small plane from Seattle in about thirty minutes. Have your vacation, get-together, private time, or retreat in this comfortable, accommodating house, located on magnificent, magical Orcas Island. Set on five acres, maximizing views while retaining privacy, this house is spacious and private, with captivating views west and north to Canada up the Strait of Georgia. Hang out and relax with friends and family. Watch beautiful sunsets, observe bald eagles and deer, be entertained by hummingbirds, luxuriate in the hot tub while you stare at the stars.
This house has many accommodations and choices. It has been tastefully and carefully furnished (by the owner/designer/architect) with comfort in mind. There is a main staircase and a secondary staircase. The dining room table seats 8-10 and there is a charming, red,-enameled, propane stove/heater in the room. The open plan sweeps from dining to living room where there is a cathedral ceiling, large, wood-burning fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the magnificent view. The kitchen is fully equipped with a sub-zero refrigerator, main sink and bar sink (both with disposals), range, convection oven, microwave, blender, waffle-maker, and all the utensils and tools you need to prepare lovely meals and snacks. There is a large, walk-in pantry. The private master suite has a bedroom with a luxuriously comfortable queen-sized bed, and an intimate propane stove. The master bathroom has a king-sized bath, shower, two sinks, and sauna. The closets in the master suite are the size of an apartment in Manhattan (ok, almost, but one does have a window seat and built-in dresser). The kids have a wing all their own too with two bedrooms and two twin-sized beds in each. An adjacent sunlit, south-facing bathroom (with shower and huge bathtub) and two sinks give kids plenty of space. The media room with sofa, recliner, VCR, and CD players, and large TV monitor (with plenty of CDs but no TV connection), is next to the kid’s bedrooms. The guest room has another fabulous, hotel-quality queen-sized bed, and an adjacent bathroom with shower. There are two rooms we do not even know how to label (Yoga room? Ballet room? Office? Playrooms?) Even the laundry room is huge. Throughout the house there are small crawl spaces within closets. The natural cedar decks stretch the entire west side length of the house, from north to south. The private hot tub on the deck is surrounded by madronas and evergreen trees but still has peek-a-boo views of Crescent Beach in one direction and Canada in another. There is a teak table and chairs with sun umbrella for fabulous outdoor dining, and lounge chairs, great for sunbathing. The house has a workshop, several garages, outbuildings, and a fire pit waiting for smores. There is an old fort (constructed by various generations of inventive, independent children) nestled in the woods.
Walk down the mountain past Crescent Beach to Eastsound Village, about a mile from the house, where you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, book store, and groceries. Take in a summer chamber music concert in town. Hike or bike on nearby Mount Constitution in Moran State Park or hike the reclaimed Turtle Back Mountain trail. Go kayaking, whale watching, or just wandering. Play games, finish puzzles. (This is a Bananagrams-friendly establishment!) Send your kids to classic Orkilla summer camp and be on the same island, but with some adult time of your own. Even, dare we say, do your work here. Sit at the dining room table, gazing from computer (with high speed connection) to the seemingly infinite view. It is inspirational.
The house is so very sweet that when we are there we always long to stay. It is perfect for family vacations, reunions, friend’s time away, writer’s retreats, or whatever. It is a magical, memorable place. Come, enjoy yourself here.

- Orcas is a wonderful island in one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world. It is lush and mountainous, with many magnificent views from various mountain tops. There is a lovely town within walking distance from the house (and other, smaller towns on island), with shops and restaurants, good grocery stores, a hardware store, bike rentals, a skateboard park, a small cinema, one of the best chocolate shops anywhere, and a great bookstore. Local artists and artisans have studios and shops throughout Orcas. There are beautiful beaches, lakes, and a wonderful, historic state park. (Moran State Park, five miles from our house, has a historic tower at the top and exceptional 360 views.) Orcas Island is magical. It is a fabulous place to explore, hike, bike ride, drive... A mountain, purchased by the Land Trust, is open to the public for marvelous hikes. There is plenty of wildlife, such as bald eagles, deer, turkey vultures, etc. but nothing particularly dangerous to humans. An extremely delightful and classic summer camp is located on the island so that you might be able to send your kids there while you have time off nearby. There are summer concerts in the park, small festivals, book fairs, and a performance center which is the locale of a fine chamber music summer series. The island is a hang out for cultured people so the library is sweet too. (You can even get videos there.) The house and island are a perfect balance of civilized society and radiant wilderness. ...moreless

Wonderful house, wonderful island
Wonderful house, wonderful island
Wonderful large well kept house with 'to die for' views from the top of a mountain. Orcas Island has so much to offer and the house is fabulous. We loved staying here and wished we could have stayed longer. We would happily return. We had to tear ourselves away from the changing scenery off the deck to take advantage of everything else this house and island had to offer. Good sleeping and seating arrangements for two couples and small children. The owner was very accommodating and easy to reach.

The driveway emptied us out onto a property you knew immediately was special. You walk in and know that you have left the office behind. It took a little time to figure out where all the bedrooms were because the halls and doorways just kept coming! Our group of 10 (two nights of 10, three nights of 8), ages 11-70, all enjoyed every inch of Max and Mindy's home. Mindy was our main contact and very graciously provided us with all the information we needed, and was available (via email) during our stay as well. Their home is beautiful and spacious, and easily accommodated us all. Not only did we feel together but had personal space as well. The photos do not capture the sense of space that we all thoroughly enjoyed in their comfortable home. The teenagers were shoo'd outside but also enjoyed playing hide and seek (so many places to hide!) and marathon games of Monopoly indoors. We hiked up Mt. Constitution, paddle boarded and swam the lake, went into town, and hiked the south trail of Turtleback Mountain (some of us even did it twice the last day because it was so worth it!). But you didn't really need to go anywhere or do anything - you can simply enjoy the gorgeous views from the house. A morning cup of coffee or an afternoon glass of wine on the deck can take hours to finish. We ate all meals in, except when we packed a picnic, and the kitchen was easy to navigate (the table comfortably seats 10!). There was no utensils or pots and pans we needed that they didn't have (teenagers loved the waffle iron). We brought most of our provisions in from Seattle, but the main grocery store was fully stocked. We will miss the magic of the island and Max and Mindy's home, but plan to return soon! Thank you for opening up your home - we hope our happy review does not result in competition for time next year! Jason and Maggie

We had a marvelous time at this gracious, beautiful home which we booked for a family reunion. We had 8 adults and we were so excited to arrive and see this lovely home which exceeded our expectations, even with the accurate photos and description. The owners have provided a truly welcoming and well equipped property that had everything we needed and more. The rooms are spacious and provided us plenty of room to hang out together or have private space to relax. The home was spotless and the decks and grounds very well maintained. The owner was helpful and provided many additional details that made our stay on Orcas enjoyable. We would recommend this property without reservation. There are so many beautiful places on the island, especially the Moran State Park, numerous water activities like whale watching and fishing, great restaurants, even a great micro brewery. We would be happy to return as we had such a pleasurably time.

This is a wonderful house with great amenities and stunning views. We walked in the door knowing that we were simply dropping off some items for the refrigerator and meeting others in Eastsound for lunch. Little did I expect that we would want to hurry through our meal and rush back to the house to explore and enjoy everything it had to offer. The views are top notch and make you forget about other rental options that are waterfront. The surrounding madrona trees, view, fireplace, hottub and hillside privacy are just wonderful exclamation points to the property and house. Each of the individual rooms offered ample space and the features are described well. The 6 adults and 2 kids in our group never felt cramped, even in the Fall when we mostly stayed indoors or in the hottub. The owners were readily available before/during the stay and accomodated a few special requests our group had. Truly cannot wait to return. Hats off to the owners for making their house available.

Year Purchased: 2007
About: We purchased this house about seven years ago when we walked in at sunset and the view took our breath away. We are a family of four, a mother who is an architect (trained at MIT) and a father who is museum professional. The mother grew up in New Jersey and the father in Texas. We met when we were each living in San Francisco and became inextricably bound by our shared sense of humor and love of culture. About 15 years ago, we began to work together, running a reasonably successful design business doing educational-purpose projects. Of course, as our teenagers have grown, we have not gone to Orcas Island as often as we have wished, despite its incredible magnetic draw. Whenever we are there we have a fabulous, memorable time and we hate to leave. Playing, relaxing, or working there -- staring out across the water and islands. It is altogether GLORIOUS. Orcas and the house are magical.
We live and work in Seattle and wanted to have a remote get-away house. We looked at all of the islands and rural properties we could and even considered designing and building our own home. But, the nature of building in so remote a place would entail a process that would be excruciatingly slow and we were impatient to have a place. This home was The One that we fell in love with after seeing dozens of other possibilities. So many people we know (and some we don't) have had remarkable moments on Orcas -- life-changing, inspirational, poignant moments. We are convinced that Orcas is the best and most phenomenal of the San Juan Islands. And we love this house and the island.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows in the main rooms that face the incredible view are enough to want to stay forever. The spacious, commodious kitchen made a cook out of me (whereas, previously, I shunned the activity). The house with all of its rooms and closets within closets is a hide-and-seek paradise for kids, and the house is so large that you can easily find privacy or company. Every day there is something special here. The first night we stayed here, a deer ran across the deck. One day, a bald eagle settled for a while in the meadow below. Hummingbirds visit us often. In winter, looking out over an artist's dream view while being warmed by the heat of the fireplace is the best feeling in the world. Sitting in the hot tub under the stars underscored that we had made absolutely the right choice. I am not kidding. It is a dream come true.
