We just stayed at the property on 4/12 - 15th. There was some good and some not so great. The location is good and if you don't mind walking a bit, the area sites, including the French Quarter, were less than a 30 minute walk. Also, the streetcar runs right down the street just 2 blocks away on St. Charles. The duplex is quaint and rustic and has positives like wood flooring, decent furniture, good appliances, a nice TV, a nice front porch overlooking St. Andrews street, etc. The negatives were that the front door would not stay closed unless you locked it, the bedroom and bathroom doors would not totally close. The stove had no gas running to it so it would not come on, there was a DVD player there that we tried to use only to realize that they were missing a white and red audio cable so we could only get a picture but no sound. The bath area looked like it had been re-tiled using a hodge podge of scrap tile and the craftsmanship looked like either a blind man or a 6 year old did the job. It was functional but just looked bad. The place was overall fully functional and met our needs as we spent most of our time out. If you are used to the Ritz Carlton then you will not be happy here. However, if you just need an inexpensive place close to downtown New Orleans with bars and eateries within walking distance, and you are not an overly pretentious person, then you will be happy here.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, age 55+.
Owner response: I agree with the tile in the bathroom there were two diffent installers one before Katrina one after the doors are 98 years old and the front doors and windows are under strict Historic district codes and I have saved as much of the building that I can but to find the hardware has been long search in salvage yard to find original and historic parts the downstairs were horse stables in 1915 glad you enjoied your stay parking at the Ritz is $65 a night close to half of what you paid for your stay your location was far safer and more convienient than the Ritz and $350 less a night

As first time VRBO users, we were very disappointed. AWFUL EXPERIENCE The unit itself is rundown and shabby. The living room is fine, but the rest of the house has a number of things that are broken or missing. The bedroom door has no latch, and only closes halfway. The high window has min-iblinds and a thin curtain, but the mini-blinds were crooked, and when I tried to close them they came loose from the window, and hung from one side, totally useless. There is a bright light right outside, so the room was lit up at night. There are no shelves or dresser in the bedroom, so you can't unpack your clothes. The bathroom had no towels (we found some in plastic bags in the closet, and they smelled musty) and no towel racks. The shower handles are puttied in place. It takes forever for the hot water to warm up, and we ran out of hot water twice. The kitchen window blinds are broken, and the window was propped open with the screen. The dishwasher is at an angle, and the door hits the wall. We never saw a washing machine. The floors were sticky, and the house had a funny smell (I think someone probably smoked, and then the house was sprayed with an air freshener). Overall, the place was not at all what we had expected. The owner is worse. I had doubts when we first booked the unit - he was confused as to which unit we had rented, and the dates. We paid in full, then he sent us another verification which was $450 more than what we had paid. He gave us a combination to the lockbox, which turned out to be wrong. The owner had instructed us to call him when we were in the taxi on the way to his unit - he confirmed this two days before our trip. We called, but he didn't answer, and his mailbox was full. We texted a few times - no response. The cab driver waited while we looked to see if we could get in, and continued to try to reach the owner, but no luck. We ended up in a hotel. I opened a complaint with VRBO. The owner later left a message saying his phone must have been off. He let us in the next day, and offered to refund us $250, - either credit or cash. We chose credit, but due to the complaint, his account was blocked, and he couldn't process the credit. He asked me to release the complaint, but I refused, and asked for cash. He never paid us. We only spent two nights in the unit out of the six we reserved, since the place was such a dump. The owner is very unreliable and dishonest.Did you find this review helpful? For being a first time vrbo.com user, I was not very impressed with the whole system. The property owner got our dates mixed up on accident and overbooked the house the day before our trip. He did get everything worked out in a very timely manner though. The house was cute and a perfect distance from everything we needed; banks, grocery store, Walgreen's and food. We had clean towels, clean dishes, and clean sheets. The house was close enough to the city we were able to walk everywhere- it took us 15 minutes to walk to Bourbon Street and about 25 minutes to walk to the Superdome. I was under the impression everything was a bit closer than that but it really wasn't that bad of a walk. I have only 2 things that were an inconvience. First, the space heater in the house did not heat the house up, we were pretty much freezing the times at the house. And second, the shower took 5-10 minutes to heat up then it would be so hot it would pretty much scald you. But honestly, it saved us time and money renting the house then getting an exspensive hotel in the city or having to take cabs into the city. In all, we had a great time in NOLA.Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: thanks Cards that is a tank less hot water system that gives you endless hot water everyone in the other units had people over it was great meeting you come back again soon

VRBO # 441095 Upon arrival to the rental home, the owner met us on site and informed us that the ceiling had a crack from hurricane issac and that if the ceiling did leak, he informed us to simply "pull the bed away from the wall." Upon further inspection the following complaints were noted 1) the leaking ceiling, 2) The toilet was not properly secured to the bathroom floor and was very unstable, 3) the dishwasher was not in working condition and was not carefully inspected, 4) the vanity in the bathroom was totally separated from the wall, 5) the freezer/refrigerator was unnoticeably warm and the internal thermometer was reading 62 F. Around 6:30 pm on 12/25/12 there was a brief thunderstorm which caused the ceiling to leak. At 9:20pm, there was a popping noise in the freezer and upon inspection the were flames behind a vent in the lower left hand corner inside the freezer. The electrical cord was unplugged and the owner was notified via phone at 9:24pm. The situation was explained to the owner and he stated that we should call him in the morning to resolve the issue. Due to safety concerns, we booked another hotel reservation and notified the owner at 8:02am. We told him our concerns and that we had booked another hotel room. We requested that half of our payment be refunded minus the $49 of damage protection. He stated that he will have to think about it for a couple of hours but stated that he will not be refunding the money. VRBO was also contacted and she also spoke to the owner of the property, which she stated that he is very difficult to speak to. Lastly, the listing did not match the description that he posted online, there was supposed to be a futon also. This was mentioned to the owner and he stated that he will go out and purchase one. The owner also wrongfully accused us of removing a towel and a blanket because he was upset that we didn't feel safe in unit. We ended up having to pay double amount for our lodging since we had to get hotel room for our 5 day stay. Photos and videos were sent to VRBO of the property and its condition.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 13/13
