Situated in downtown Banner Elk, this newly remodeled and expanded mountain house is convenient to all the High Country attractions - less than 3 miles to Beech and Sugar mountains (skiing, hiking, or just enjoying), 0.5 miles to Lees-McRae College and its wonderful theater offerings, excellent golf courses (public and private) within 6 miles, less than 25 minutes to Grandfather Mountain, and walking distance to Tate-Evans Park and the many wonderful restaurants/shops/festivals/music in Banner Elk. And if you are willing to venture a little further, there is Mast General Store at Valle Crucis, Linville Falls, Linville Caverns, Tweetsie Railroad, Maggie Valley, apple orchards, fishing, white water rafting, etc. Excellent and unique shopping is available in Valle Crucis and in Blowing Rock, and in the many shops and stores along the way. The list seems endless - you just name it - and it's there for your enjoyment and relaxation! Since the house is located on 3 acres of land that has been left pretty much 'natural', there is a lot of nature to enjoy right at the house.
However, being centrally located in Banner Elk, this house is a perfect place to serve as your center of operations to either enjoy the many opportunities available or to just relax and enjoy being 'in the mountains' with its wonderful people. This house has a history of its own in that it served as the Town Hall of Banner Elk in the past (while the current one was being built) and was recently expanded in the last year so that it can now comfortably accommodate 6 to 8 people with all the amenities of 'home away from home.' The house is well-equipped from its 3-car paved parking area, to its beautiful stone fireplace (with a mantel recovered from a Georgia barn) located in a Great Room with a cathedral ceiling, to its modern flat screen TV's, its outdoor gas grill installed on its almost 400 sq. ft. main deck, its stacked washer and dryer, and its built-in dishwasher. You are sure to enjoy your stay whether it is a special romantic weekend or full-fledged family get-away with all the troops.
If you decide to come, we are certain that you will enjoy your stay and the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.

About the owner: The house and property are currently owned by Lou and Buddy Leasure who reside in Greensboro. They inherited the property from Lou's father and mother, Linwood and Sally Lafferty. Mr. Lafferty came to Banner Elk in 1931, when Mr he was hired by Edgar Tufts, who founded Lees-McRae College. Mr Lafferty was hired to teach sciences (Chemistry, Physics) and to run the power plant for the college. In 1931, only the College, the Grandfather Home for Children and Grace Memorial Hospital (now a part of the College) had electricity. Mr. Lafferty, with support from Mr. Tufts, did well and he played a very significant role in bringing 'electricity to the mountains'. He became a licensed electrical contractor (wiring many of the homes in the region) and he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mountain Electric Co-op (which still provides power in this area) for 38 years. He taught at LMC for more than 35 years, and at one time served as Dean of the school.
Mrs. Lafferty was a student at Lees-McRae when she and Linwood first met. They married in 1934. In their spare time, Mr. & Mrs. Lafferty ran the Banner Elk Hardware Store, which was in effect the center of town It was located across Route 194 from the listed house, which served as the Town Hall. Mrs. Lafferty played a major role in running the hardware store, and she served for years as the Town Clerk of Banner Elk.
Why the Owner Chose Banner Elk: We inherited this property in the mid-90's when Mrs. Lafferty deceased.
The Unique Benefits at this House: We, as well as, our children (4) and grandchildren (11) love Banner Elk, and we enjoy coming here whenever we can.
