Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: Born on the Big Island in Pahala town and raised since the age of 5 on Lana'i. My father, a Maui kamaaina ,brought us all here in 1957 and was the only doctor here for many years. He delivered babies, preformed all the necessary surgeries and later brought Straub to the island. Along with the other teenagers of our time, I picked pineapples in the summers. We moved away in1976 and I returned in 1998 as a dialysis nurse to pioneer and run the only dialysis center on the island . I was working in Honolulu and took care of the Lana'i patients who dialyzed off island as there was no center for them. Some of the patients where friends of my parents when I was younger so I felt a sense of giving back, so to speak, as I had the skill and able to go home once again. As I arrived home for the first time some 20 years later I realized this is where I needed to be. I wrote 2 songs about the island. One speaks of Koele and the other Hulopo'e Bay. One speaks of the original Norfolk pines and pastures waving.' As if to welcome me to a home across the sea.' The other,' the warmth of the sun,and the deep silver sea. A'ama basking on rock and stone.'
Why the Owner Chose Lanai City: I needed a home and this was the best, move in ready, newly renovated home. The name on the wall near to the door, welcomed me with Ho'ola'i Home. And once inside I looked down the hall and thought 'yes, this is Home'.
I presently reside in the back of the house, totally separate from the front. With my own entrance. I would like to extend a warm welcome to guests to stay in my home. E komo mai !
The Unique Benefits at this House: This subdivision was once one of the pineapple fields that we were assigned to work hoe hana, or to pick pineapple with a team and a luna, or boss. It is in a family friendly environment. Plantation cottage style with a nice welcoming porch.
