Antigua house description
The house is set in two acres of adobe-walled property which was originally a loquat (nispero) orchard overlooking Agua, Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes. It also has fantastic views of unspoilt mountains and cloud forest which is rare in the Antigua area. This is because there are two large private reserves across the ravine (El Pilar has beautiful hiking and bird watching trails and Hacienda Carmona grows quality coffee and keeps dairy cows from which you can buy fresh, raw milk).
The village of San Cristobal el Alto is full of wonderfully friendly people. The village was based on tailors (sastres), harvesting of loquats, apples and pears. There are three local shops here (about a 5 minute walk downhill from the house).
There are some amazing hiking and biking trails all accessible right from your door (details available upon request).
There is a green area for relaxing, playing, yoga or sunset drinks overlooking the volcanoes. There is a bonfire/firepit area set up and a dry stone path leads down to the large veranda which can be used for alfresco birdwatching breakfasts as the sun comes up or lounging in the afternoons. There are a variety of birds who make the area their home including some majestic vultures, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, parrots and an owl we have heard regularly but never seen. The house is on three levels accessed by 3 steps each. The first platform includes the additional bedrooms, lofts, playroom and study/office area. The middle platform is an open plan living area which consists of living room, dining area and kitchen. The lower platform is the master bedroom which consists of the bedroom, bathroom with enormous deep bathtub, walk in wardrobe and wooden deck perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views.
There are 4 bedrooms in total as well as 2 small lofts which can be used as additional (small) sleeping areas or a study. There is a play room for children. There are 3 full bathrooms, a visitor toilet and an outside garden shower with hot water.
Our house and property have been developed with a view to self sustainability and care for the environment, so all our organic waste is composted, our grey and black water are separated and we reduce as much waste as possible, recycling everything else possible.
We have an organic veggie garden from which you can help yourself to whatever is in season (often broccoli, carrots, herbs etc). There are various fruit trees and bushes on the property including the above mentioned loquat trees, avocados, peaches, custard apple, pears, pomegranates, very young citrus trees, passion fruit vine, wild blackberry and strawberry bushes. So pick to your heart's delight - in the right season ofcourse!
There is also a play area for children with a little wooden hut, swing, slide, sandbox and swing bridge.
For the few chilly nights, there is a Spanish-oven type of wood fire which warms the whole living area, and you can use it to make tea or coffee at the same time.
The house also has a welcome pack full of useful information about the village and the co-operative they have recently started, Antigua and Guatemala in general as well as tours and activities which we are happy to help you organize.
To get to the house, you can use the bus service (3 times a day except Sundays), the 'flete' service provided by the villagers or choose to rent a car.
Although the house is away from it all, there is full time security from our guardian who lives next door and cleaning service can be included if you need this. If there are any specific items you would just love to have, then let us know and we can get them for you. You will also be greeted with a basket of bathroom goodies handcrafted by the owner with 100% natural plant based ingredients.

- The property is in the small, friendly village of San Cristobal el Alto which is up a hill from Antigua. There is plenty of opportunity for immersion in local life if you should choose this, alternatively you could simply escape from it all with the space and tranquility to do so. There is a village cooperative also offering village tours, hikes up to little known attractions such as the Cucurucho Mountain top, visits to local artesans houses where you can see the unique things made in the village, there are also local beekeepers who extract raw honey using air pressure. During Oct to Dec is normally nispero (loquat) harvest season, and you can participate in this if you desire....moreless

A MUST thing to do while in Antigua
A MUST thing to do while in Antigua
That was one of the best experiences ever. My fiance and I spend in San Cristobal el Alto one unforgettable weekend. We definitely want to come back. The house is amazing! It has everything you might possible need, full equipped for any type of stay. A lot of space inside as well as outside. The garden is well maintained and has a lot of fruits and vegetables, that you can enjoy. The view is breath taking and the whole energy of the place seams to transport you in another dimension. Perfect for anyone who knows how to appreciate good life. Lucy, the owner is very kind and helpful. She is responsive online as well you'll find a perfect info service in the house. They have a very clear guide book. We are very grateful for this experience. am

We spent the month of March at Beat and Lucy’s house in San Cristobal el Alto. For an authentic, off-the-beaten track, naturalist’s vacation in Guatemala, this has it all. The town is a step back in time. So far, it is off the tourist radar and outsiders bringing tourist dollars are a welcome sight. Everyone was extremely friendly and patient with our limited Spanish. The town has formed a small tourism cooperative and very personal tours are available of the community and the surrounding trails. The house sits on a ridge between two exceptional protected areas. The back deck faces the extensive forests of the Carmona Dairy and great birdwatching can be done from there. On the other side of the house is the well-known birding hotspot, Finca el Pilar. They have an extensive trail system traversing elevations ranging from approximately 1400 m to 2200 m. Also, from the deck there are excellent views of two volcanoes, including Fuego which erupted regularly while we were there—quite awe-inspiring. How Beat and Lucy could ever left this beautiful house and location defies explanation. The house is as beautiful as the pictures show and although situated in a wild area, it is only about 20 minutes by bus to Antigua. It is not necessary to have a vehicle. Fresh fruits and vegetables as well as meat and other basics are available in the local “tiendas”, and buses go to and from Antigua three times a day. We didn’t have a car and we managed quite nicely The house easily accommodates a family and as stated in the listing, there is a great little play-yard for kids, as well as toys and games in the house.

Best Kept Secret!
Best Kept Secret!
This is truly amazing. It was our favorite place to stay in Guatemala. San Cristobal is a small town just up the mountain outside Antigua. It's close enough to visit Antigua (10-15 minutes drive) but tucked away from tourist scene. This small village is incredibly friendly and filled with interesting people and breathtaking scenery. The house is quite spacious and comfortable. It was a wonderful place to stay with children. There is an outdoor play area for the children and beautiful gardens. The volcano views are awe-inspiring. The owner was responsive and helped us arrange many activities. San Cristobal is the kind of place where you find friends and we can't wait to find a time to visit again.

The View....Just Incredible
The View....Just Incredible
Our family just spent a fun and truly relaxing weekend at the house in San Cristobal. The photos simply don't do justice to the actual views from the veranda, where we spent so much time. The views of the volcanoes were incredible. We took lots of photos (including of the various birds that fly around the place). Our favorite part of the house was the large patio. Large enough space for the kids to run around and play with their toys. I forget how many beers we consumed there. The kids also took advantage of the playground, the picnic area and the garden. Lots for them to do. Our 4 year old befriended the caretaker and his dog "Rocky," who was very nice. We went on a family hike up the road. It was good exercise for everyone, and we enjoyed more spectacular views. We went into town once. It was on a Saturday afternoon, and a few women were preparing the church for Sunday services. The church was surprisingly well taken care of. In shory, San Cristobal is a nice getaway from Antigua (which can get awefully congested, especially on the weekends). We recommend that you bring grocery up to the house (including beers). The local tienda sells cervezas, but only stocks one brand. Most of all, you should bring your camera.

About the owner: We are a British/Swiss couple with two young children. Beat has lived in the Antigua area for nearly 20 years and Lucy has lived between Belize and Guatemala for 10 years. Both our children were born here. Beat is a keen mountain biker and Lucy has worked in the tourism industry both in Guatemala and Belize for the last 10 years, although she now focuses on her business as a nutritionist and creating natural skin & hair care products. We now make this our temporary home as we have moved to neighboring Belize where Lucy grew up.
Why the Owner Chose Antigua:
We built our home to be closer to nature and being more immersed with the local population while still being within easy access of Antigua facilities and amenities. We love the quiet up here, the birds, the space and tranquility and being able to just walk out of the door and go hiking or biking on some amazing little known trails.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Possibility to immerse yourself (if you choose) in the local village life, undisturbed mountain vistas, views of different volcanoes (and occassional lava eruptions from Fuego) from different parts of the property, the fantastic organic, heirloom seed veggie garden, the fruit trees and berry bushes, herbs and flowers, unique hiking and mountain bike trails, access from your door to see how local village artesans create their crafts (textile weaver, tailors, wooden crafts and beekeepers amongst others in the co-operative). Come between Oct and Dec for the nispero season harvest or Dec to Feb for avocado harvesting.
