Slow down, relax, and enjoy the wonderful ambiance of this comfortable vacation home on 8 acres. River Watch Farm has rested on a scenic gravel lane overlooking the New River for a century. Our spacious, tastefully-restored farmhouse has many outstanding features that set it apart, including beautiful river and pasture views, two living areas (one upstairs, one downstairs), and a large country kitchen (very well-equipped) that has space for two cooks.
The house features three bedrooms, one queen with private bath, two twins with private bath (convertible to 1 K with private bath), and one double with shared half bath. You'll also find a sleeping area containing two twins that is separate from the living areas and shares a 1/2 bath. The house is casually decorated with quilts, braided rugs, and antiques. In chilly weather you'll enjoy the woodstove in the downstairs living room. We provide satellite TV with VCR and DVD player, CD player, and a wide variety of videos and DVDs, books, puzzles, and games for all ages to enjoy.
Ask about dial-up internet access for your laptop!
For outdoor living, you'll find a large, covered front porch that features a picnic table, porch swing and rockers. We also have an outdoor fire pit (perfect for cookouts or campfires, even in the winter) and a rustic swing for the kids. Rainy weather? Sit on the porch or nap on the upstairs sofa and enjoy the comforting sound of rain on the tin roof. Snowy weather? Bring your sleds and have a ball right outside the back door, or drive to Boone for skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating.
River Watch Farm is easily accessible year round, even in snowy weather. There are no hairpin turns or steep elevations to access this property. River access for your canoe, tube, or fishing pole is a short stroll down the lane. The area is served by canoe outfitters in the summer months. For the dedicated porch-sitter, we offer views of the New River, cows grazing in the pasture, and bird-watching. For the outdoor exerciser, we are located on a flat scenic gravel lane, great for running, walking, or biking.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1997
My husband Chuck and I are co-owners of our mountain property, River Watch Farm. I am the property manager while my husband handles maintenance and upkeep. In our spare time I am self-employed as a Registered Dietitian and my husband is a landscape architect. We are both active in professional organizations and are involved with our two sons, who are 18 and 14. Between work, kids, volunteer activities, and River Watch Farm we are busy but happy!
Why the Owner Chose West Jefferson
My husband and I have traveled extensively in the NC mountains and decided one day to drive up to Ashe County to look at property near on the New River. When we found our farmhouse in Ashe County, we knew it was the home for us. The house and surroundings reminded me of my home outside Ithaca, NY, and the agricultural surroundings reminded us of where we met, Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA. Our two sons were 6 and 2 when we purchased the house in 1997 and they have grown up canoeing and kayacking the New River. We live in Salisbury, NC, about 2 hours away, but we visit the house regularly and spend many weekends doing odd jobs to keep it in tip-top shape. River Watch Farm has been a labor of love for our family. We love the fact that our house is private and quite, yet just 10-15 minutes from groceries and restaurants. We believe it is the best of both worlds. Ashe is a unique area that is beautiful and offers lots of amenties but is close to the hustle and bustle of other areas in the NC High Country.
The Unique Benefits of this Restored Farmhouse on 8 acres
Our favorite activities are relaxing...having a lazy day reading on the porch, snoozing, or taking long walks by the river, then grilling out and enjoying an evening bonfire and roasting marshmellows. There is nothing better than bringing good friends to the house and letting the kids loose the explore the woods while we relax. There are a few houses nearby but we are not in a subdivision...so the kids have lots of space to run, play, and be kids. Our backyard grill is the best restaurant in Ashe County! We love kayaking and canoeing on the New River, and my husband has discovered all the best fly-fishing spots. We also enjoy gallery crawls at the local art galleries. When the weather is rainy (and we do need the rain!) we enjoy watching moves or sports.

Heaven! We baked brownies, drank coffee on the porch, rolled in the golden leaves, mooed at the cows, and played hours of games. I was so happy to find a nice place to relax and enjoy the view out of every window. Thanks for everything!

What a wonderful weekend in the mountains! The weather was beautiful and this was a fantastic place to be together as one big family. We got to go to the Farmer's Market, the Festival at the Frescos, and our first Mountain Music Jamboree. Thanks for the wonderful place to call home for the weekend.

We really enjoyed the old country charm of your home. We also appreciated the modern conveniences. Thanks for the well-stocked kitchen. We ate all our meals here and didn't wnat for any pot, dish, or gadget. The front porch swing was a real favorite spot. It feels like being up in a treehouse with the beautiful trees out there.

A recent guest left the comments below in our guestbook at the farmhouse: What could be better….a great house, a beautifully-equipped kitchen, nice cool weather in August, great scenery, a perfect firepit, really fun canoeing. If you can’t relax and have a great time here, it is your own fault. We love it hear and can’t wait to come back with more family and friends.

Homeowner Response:
We extermininate regularly for ants, spiders, roaches, and other household pests. Because we are in a remote location, we do have moths and small flying insects that are attracted to the lights in the house at night. They can come in through open doors or slip through the screens at times. This is normal insect behavior and is not a reflection of poor maintenance or upkeep by the homeowner. Keeping doors shut after dark is recommended.
