La Loubiere lies at the foothills of the Luberon Natural Park, surrounded by beautiful countryside, in the ten acre grounds of a 16th century chateau. An ideal location for hikers and mountain bikers with its proximity to the Durance River, it offers a contrast, with the beautiful city of Aix-en-Provence, just twenty minutes away.
The accommodation is spread over three houses which are separate and private. They can be let separately, sleeping four, six or ten respectively, or together, making an ideal location for a group/family of up to twenty.
Each of the three houses have been lovingly restored by the owners to provide modern accommodation, whilst retaining the character and original features of the old buidings, with stone walls, beams and tiled floors. The interiors are furnished to a high standard with beautiful fabrics and bed linens in a Provencal style.
La Grange, once a stone barn, now offers accommodation for ten, in two double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and three twin bedded rooms with a large family bathroom. The open plan kitchen/dining/livig area is vast(1000 sq feet, with high ceilings, a huge fireplace and comfortable sofas - plenty of space for everyone. There is a laundry room with an additional toilet and basin. The raised terrace is south and west fcing and has views of the swimming pool, surrounding countryside and beautiful sunsets.
Les Platanes, a charming stone cottage, sleeping four, is steeped in character. The two bedrooms, one double and one twin are fresh and light with Provencal fabris and bedlinen. The open plan kitchen/dining/living room has exposed stone walls and beams and is comfortably furnished with two sofas. The bathroom is bright and airy. There is a private south-facing terrace, with views of the park and adjacent to a grass area, shaded by four large plane trees (Platanes)
Sebastian's House is built into the rocky hillside and sleeps up to six people. It has a cool, bright kitchen and sitting area and leading off this, a large stone built room with a dining table. This room can also be used as a third bedroom, with a queen sized bed. There is a large double bedroom, a twin bedded room and a bathroom on the first floor. Sebastian's House has its own drive way and exterior parking, adjacent to a private, west-facing terrace.
Guests at La Loubiere have their own fenced pool (39-feet by 20-feet) with comfortable loungers to relax on, surrounded by over two acres of grounds, with views of lavender and the thyme and rosemary covered hills. The tennis court, which is set in the grounds of the chateau, has been resurfaced in 2008. Guests have unlimited access to the court. The English owners inhabit the chateau, which is set to the east of the property, slightly apart from the houses. However, they are always happy to help or give advice.
The town of Pertuis is three miles from La Loubiere and offers a wide range of shops, from small family bakers to large supermarkets. The area is well served by restaurants and more markets than there are days of the week.
The motorway is only a ten-minute drive away which gives easy access to coastal resorts such as Cassis, Marseille and the Camargue. Also, the cities of Aix en Provence, Avignon and Arles, steeped in culture and history. In contrast there are the famous villages of the Luberon, including Lourmarin, Cucuron, Bonnieux, and La Tour d'Aigues, all easily reached by meandering country routes.

The most important comment that we can make is that the chateau was everything we had hoped it would be, and more. A year and a half ago, when we began the planning process with our four children and families, daughter Liz, who lives just a few kilometers from La Loubiere, put us in contact with Deb and Alec, and reservations were made for La Grange and Sebastian's. The common area in La Grange is awesome. The kitchen is large and well equipped, and the dishwasher was in constant use. The 17 of us were comfortably seated at meal time, enhancing our sense of togetherness. The three large sofas accommodated watching the Olympics, or just visiting. The bedrooms are very comfortable and well appointed; we chose the en suite that gave us access to a charming deck and view. Everyone was happy with their sleeping arrangements. The pool was heavily used throughout the week for swimming, sunbathing, and general fun, as was the tennis court. Many of us enjoyed early morning walks in this picturesque setting. Alec and Deb are gracious and accommodating hosts, and although no facility problems arose, we knew they were available just in case.Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Five "girl" (we're all over 60) cousins enjoyed La Grange earlier this summer. A younger daughter/niece joined us later in the week plus my husband towards the end... plenty of room for all of us. We email back and forth wishing we were still there. The property is gorgeous, Having read the other reviews, they say it all. Great location, great host family, proximity to wonderful day trips and what a place to return to in the evening! The pool is big enough to keep up with lap swimming. I only wish we'd had more time than a week, so we'll just have to go back! One runs out of superlatives. Enjoy!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

What can I say, other than ``what an outstanding surprise!! The property description looked good but you have to see this property to believe it. Absolutely over-the-top charming. Located about a pretty 10 minute drive from Pertuis in Le Luberon, this property is so ideally located for short drives to many hightlighted places in Provence including many great wineries (Domaines de viniculture). The property is tastefully decorated by the owners with matching everything and very `Provencale`. The kitchen is perfectly supplied giving one the ability to cook every meal but there are also excellent restaurants within a short drive. The bathroom is bright and has a combination bath/shower. The cottage we stayed in, 'Les Platanes' had a second bed-room. Master bed room was comfortable and spacious. Each guest property is independent from the others and very private. Even a beautiful swimming pool surrounded by lavender plants which seem to grow almost wild in this part of France. We could not have asked for more. Pleasant and very helpful owners, wonderful surroundings, comfortable beds and extremely well-manicured and tastefully planned gardens.` Life is good! Close to the amphitheatre in Arles, the walled city in Avignon, the fish market (fantastic) in Marseilles, the scenery in Cassis and the various country markets in many small towns and villages in the area. This property lacks nothing. A perfect holiday location. We`ll be back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Each year our group of friends from various parts of the world ( that total 18 of us) gather together in one spot for a "friends week" somewhere . .usually in Europe. La Loubiere was an excellent choice this year. It was large enough to accommodate all of us comfortably as we rented all 3 of the houses on the property. Accommodations were comfy as were bath facilities and we had enough of space for private time when needed. The kitchens were well equiped and also provisioned of spices and accessories from past visitors. a very nice find. Also the Internet, swimming pool and tennis court were all used. La Loubiere was close to town for groceries and conveniences, but just far enough out of town to be secluded. It was also a great place to base one self to visit the surrounding are of Provence. The owners were most gracious and accommodating for any need. If you have a large family group or friends to getaway... this was an excellent choice.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Our time spent in "Le Provence" was most enjoyable We requested to stay an additional night as we loved the cottage so much!....most accommodating for 4 adults. (so quaint but had modern amenities too!) The owners were so welcoming and friendly and every effort was met by them to make this a memorable holiday for us there! We would highly recommend this location and will add it to our plans when we return to France in the future The proximity of local vineyards, wine tasting, historic towns, local markets was a bonus. The grounds are impressive and lounging by the pool was so relaxing and peaceful! Our friends back home were envious of our photos and are interested in making a reservation of their own!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Our family of 3 stayed recently (June '10) at this wonderful Chateau. We were very comfortable in 'Les Platanes' and very much enjoyed the hospitality of Deb and Alec. The place is well equipped with the pool, BBQ and spacious grounds being our favourite features. From this base we were able to go on day trips (need a car) south to Cassis, Verdon area canyons, also visited many beautiful villages nearby including the markets and some great restaurants - all recommended by our hosts. This location was a great launching place to all the attactions of the Provence area. Our favourite week of our 4 week vacation in Europe!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Dear Deb and Alec, We had a relaxing, memorable stay in your beautiful La Grange apartment. The accommodations were stunning-the expansive apartment, refreshing pool surrounded by the blooming fragrant lavender, tennis court and lawn all created a perfect place for us to play and unwind. We took several trips out to Cassis (spectacular), Pont du Gard (amazing), and area markets and vineyards(beautiful and tasty)- And spent a few days lounging by the pool. It was the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation! Thank you so much for all the help you gave us. You are gracious wonderful hosts and, as there is still so much to see and do,we will plan to return to La Loubiere!- Betsy and DavidDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

A very belated but very warm thank you to Debbie and Alec McDougall for our family's fantastic visit! La Grange and Les Plantanes were perfect - beyond my wildest dreams. The weather was also perfect and the view was magnificent. We ate on the balcony and watched the sun go down and the stars come out. This was the ideal home base for day trips to Aix, Arles, Fountaine de Vaucluse, Lourmarin,Lac Ste Croix, Stes Maries de la mer, and much more. Morning and night we swam in the beautiful pool, surrounded by a fragrant lavender hedge. The tennis court was a great bonus - 9 of us out of 13 played and had some great family games. Th bedrooms, bathrooms and spacoius living and dining area were delightfully decorated with colours and prints of Provence. The kitchen area was large enough for many cooks and helpers, and well stocked with attractive dishes, cooking utensils, etc. We will all retain forever many fond memories both of La Loubiere and of Provence. Our hosts looked after us well and we had a wonderful holiday!Did you find this review helpful? My mother rented La Grange (for 2 weeks) and Les Platanes (for a week)in July this summer for 13 from our extended family. It was the trip of a lifetime! Most of us have travelled a fair bit but both the setting of La Loubiere and the experience of Provence were fabulous. Provence has innumerable places to see- both famous and tucked away in partial obscurity- as a result, every day was full of enjoyment- some fast-paced, others completely slow. Cycling up Mont Ventoux was a personal trip highlight and there is fabulous cycling thropughout Provence. We rarely sat down to dinner before 9:30pm but when we did, eating on the deck of La Grange and watching the sun go down was a highlight of every day (yes it really does shine almost all the time). Deb and Alec are great hosts and they have done a wonderful job making their guest houses attractive and comfortable. And we even squeezed in some tennis on their very nice tennnis court. The memories will last a lifetime!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2002
About the owner: We are originally from England, however, work took us to The Netherlands, when our family was young. Living in mainland Europe gave us plenty of opportunities to explore many different countries, but something always drew us back to southern France for family holidays. We often dreamed of buying an old place to restore when the children had grown up, but then when the situation actually presented itself, we found ourselves moving with three children still in education. Fortunately, none of us has ever regretted it for a second. We had restored old houses before, but taking on a property that was nearly 500 years old, was quite a challenge - often a nightmare, but more often than not full filling a dream. Everyone gets roped in from time to time to help with big projects, like excavating wells and discovering secret passages. The property is so old and has so much history and charater, we feel more like we are its caretakers, rather than the owners.
Why the Owner Chose Aix en Provence:
Actually I think the property chose us, parts of it were so run down, no one else would have been crazy enough to take it on.... but we quickly fell in love with it ... and we like a challenge! It has certainly been a labour of love - a lot of hard work but very rewarding, particularly as we can now see our guests enjoying it as much as we do. This is the most beautiful part of Provence, with the coast only a 45 minute drive away and the lush Luberon hills above us, and the wonderful villages and markets that make Provence unique. There is so much to see and experience, that when we do'remember' to take a day off, we are still discovering news places and 'gems'
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The three houses can be rented individually or together, making it very popular with groups of friends and large families who want to holiday together but don't necessarily want to be all under the same roof! There are secluded areas where guests can escape for some quiet time, but plenty of space to enjoy each others company dining al fresco or working off the effects on the tennis court or in the pool. Set in the countryside, 'La Loubiere' is only five minutes drive from a bustling town and a short drive from the numerous Luberon villages and their markets. In contrast Aix-en-Provence, one of the most beautiful cities in France is only twenty minutes drive away. Returning to 'La Loubiere' after a busy day exploring and being able to relax and watch the sun setting with a glass of wine - there is nothing to beat it!
