Petersburg Civil War Mansion
Petersburg Civil War Mansion
The house and host are outstanding, as is the rustic town of Petersburg. We stayed at the Mansion for 30 days, wish it could have been 60 or 90. There is so much to experience in Petersburg, Richmond and the surrounding areas. Our hosts have lived in the community for several years, introduced us to the locals, made us feel as if we were part of the family; it was a vacation we will never forget. The Civil War home was just beautiful. Each bedroom with a separate sitting room and bathroom. The furnishings were elegant yet comfortable. From the kitchen to the sunroom, there was everything you could possibly want for a short stay or a long one like ours. And the surrounding grounds were just gorgeous. What a wonderful place to stay to see the beautiful state of Virginia.

About the owner: We are attorneys with a practice in historic preservation law, and we fell in love with the Sutherland House and the opportunity to own a piece of American history. When we purchased the home, the main house had been mostly renovated, but the dependency was a shell. Over 2 years our parents renovated the dependency, and it was featured in This Old House magazine! The Sutherland House has also been featured in Southern Living, and the property was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places this year.
Why the Owner Chose Petersburg:
The Sutherland House was built in 1862 by a grocer in Petersburg. During the Civil War, his daughter kept a journal about all of the soldiers she met who were serving on the front lines during the nearly ten month Siege of Petersburg. We enjoy the unique mix of history and culture in Petersburg, with its antique shops, fine dining, and museums.
