Tellico Plains cottage description
You deserve a secluded restful vacation in the mountains. This is the perfect site for family reunions or large groups of friends to gather! Enjoy nature and all it has to offer deep in the Appalachian Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee, 22 miles east of Vonore & Tellico Plains near the vast Citico Wilderness Area.
The Cottage at Hemlock Grove, located only 50 minutes from I-75 or the Knoxville Airport, tucks you away in extreme privacy and luxury in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Located in a private hollow on 300 acres you can immerse your senses in all that Nature has to offer. Spend days exploring streams, old growth forests, an old mountaineer homestead, and expansive, unspoiled views after hiking to a private mountain top ridge. This is a true Tennessee mountain experience without roughing it!
For its remoteness, this upscale cottage is surprisingly close to many attractions. Bring your jet-skis or boat and enjoy Tellico and Chilhowee Lakes. Boat ramps are just a few miles away. Abundant trout run in gorgeous, rushing, Citico Creek just minutes away. The Citico forest service road runs along the creek for twenty magnificent miles through the Cherokee National Forest to the breathtaking Cherohala Skyway (Hwy 165) and Indian Boundary Lake.
Thirteen trails, within the National Forest, totaling 57.4 miles provide access to much of Citico Creek Wilderness. For a fun day trip, Dollywood and the other attractions of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are less than two scenic hours away (76 miles). Scenic drive enthusiasts will love the proximity to the 'tail of the dragon' or Highway 129 to Deal's Gap.

This is a wonderful place for young people to explore, hike, bike, swim in nearby lakes and be in a country setting unlike any others. Parents with children younger than 5 may find it difficult to protect the hand-made rugs and breakable decorative items throughout the cottage. One young guest couldn't resist the alarm panel that he reached by climbing a chair. This house is not particularly child-proofed and presents certain dangers to young ones including a hard-wood staircase and wood-burning stove. Guardians take full responsibility. A great base for part of our summer vacation from England
A great base for part of our summer vacation from England
We decided to visit a part of the USA we had never seen before for our 2013 holiday and booked two weeks in Tennessee, one of which was at Hemlock Grove. And we were not disappointed! Lee was extremely helpful in advance of the holiday, answering my numerous questions about airports, car hire, things to do and the property itself. I often got a comprehensive response within a few hours of asking a question. I felt I knew both the local area and the property before we left England. There were no unpleasant surprises when we arrived. Just things to delight us! Hemlock Grove is tastefully and thoughtfully furnished, clean, and well equipped. A real home from home. Before arriving at Hemlock Grove I was slightly concerned that our 3 children would quickly get bored (ages 15, 14 and 11), especially because the first week of our vacation was in the hustle and bustle of a city. But it all turned out fine! The property has masses of space (giving everyone privacy when they want it), plenty of character, land to explore and a hot tub and fire pit to keep the children occupied. Further afield we loved swimming at Indian Boundary lake (forget the marked boundaries of the swimming area - simply swim from one side of the lake to the other), visiting Fort Loudon, driving and stopping on the Cherohala Skyway, driving and gawping in the Great Smoky Mountains, seeing black bears with cubs by the side of the road!, walking across the Fontana Dam, finding some nice cafes along the way with great views etc. My wife and I also took pleasure in the little things like the delightful Sloans store in Vonore (really nice, friendly and chatty staff), bird and butterfly spotting in the garden and taking regular runs (slogs) through the local woods. We had a great family holiday in Tennessee - for anyone reading this in England: "go on, give Florida a miss. Get away from your fellow Brits for a couple of weeks and visit Tennessee or another State off the UK tourist map". Thank you USA! Thank you Lee!

Owner response: Martin, Thanks for the fantastic review! We are extremely pleased that your family was able to have a wonderful and memorable American wilderness adventure in the Cherokee National Forest and Smoky Mountain National Park! You have pointed out all of the fantastic sight seeing and scenic driving opportunities around The Cottage at Hemlock Grove! Thanks for leaving the cottage in great shape and we hope to see you (and other "Brits") back in the future! Lee
Our desires to relax and reconnect with family were met at this remote retreat. The comfortable, welcoming, roomy environment was a great place to unwind and hang out. The owners and caretakers were extremely accommodating and helpful. Many thanks for the memories!

Great Soaky Mountains
Great Soaky Mountains
I rented the Cottage at Hemlock Grove with the bunkhouse for a week of motorcycle riding with 13 friends over the Independence Day period. The listing is spot-on. Although it rained almost continuously most of the week, we had a great time. We even got a little riding in. It's about 20-30 miles to either the Cherohala Skyway (Tellico Plains) or the Northwest side of the Dragon's Tail (US 129). So many other great rides and activities in this area! Foothills Parkway, Blue Ridge Parkway, Harrah's Cherokee Casino, Gatlinburg Tennessee, rafting on the Nantahala, and tons of great fishing. I highly recommend a visit to the Wheels Through Time motorcycle museum in Maggie Valley, NC, though it's a bit of a drive. The property is clean, well stocked/maintained, and comfortable. You need only to bring food and clothing. VERY secluded and peaceful.......Well off the beaten path and about 20 miles from the nearest store. Leave your electronic leash at home. Perfect getaway for larger groups and families. Great value. The last 4-5 miles of paved road leading to Hemlock Grove is really hilly and curvy (it's the REAL dragon's tail -challenging on a motorcycle when it's wet). But everyone in our party made it in and out safely and we had a blast! Especially enjoyed using the deck and spacious grill on the 4th of July. Great experience with the owner - informative and helpful.

Owner response: David, Thanks for the great review. You touched on some of the great scenery and destinations that are so accessible from the cottage. We are glad your group had a fun time. Please come back for some Fall riding to see the beautiful foliage!
Seven guys got together for a weeklong fishing trip. We chartered for stripers and fished for trout. The accomadations were as advertised, and worked out very well for all of us. We found the rental to be well furnished, clean, and accurately represented. If we were to do this trip again, I would not hesitate to use this rental again.

Loved it, again
Loved it, again
We love staying at the Cottage at Hemlock Grove. It's a comfortable house with lots of room inside and out for everyone to roam and be comfortable. Brought our family here last year and came back again this year. Huge property that the kids love to explore. Huge house with everything you could need. Definitely a retreat, as the house is tucked away from everything.

Cottage on Hemlock Grove
Cottage on Hemlock Grove
My family and I recently had the privilege of visiting the Vonore, TN area to assist with and attend the wedding of our oldest daughter. We needed lodging to accommodate approximately 15 guests, and our daughter suggested the Cottage on Hemlock Grove. We looked up the site on the internet, and felt that it would well meet our needs - the main thing we were looking for was a place large enought to accommodate our extended family. Reservations were made, and many emails went back and forth between me and the owners, as they patiently answered my questions leading up to our stay. Nothing could have prepared me for what awaited. The drive alone to Hemlock Grove was breathtaking. Beautiful untouched mountain countryside, and nestled in a valley/grove was the unexpected home called Hemlock Grove. The outside of the house is very nice, excellently maintained, but did not prepare us for what lay inside. The home is absolutely gorgeous - wood floors - updated furnishings and bathrooms - comfortable beds, bedding, towels - a very well proportioned kitchen to meet the needs of cooking for a large group of people if that is something you plan to do. Washer and driver - iron and ironing board, etc. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have slept in away from home. The outdoor living space of the property is breathtaking. Remote, quiet, natural beauty, well-maintained - peaceful - the ultimate definition of serenity. Lots of land for hiking and exploring. The front porch is nice for sitting and reading a book, doing needlework, reading, or napping. The back deck is the same - sitting and relaxing - or cooking out on the gas grill and entertaining and enjoying some peaceful outdoor dining with friends. The hot tub was also wonderful - peaceful and quiet relaxation at the end of our busy days. In addition to the main house, a bunkhouse was also available to accommodate additional guests - with wood-fired heater - a kitchen - bathroom - pool table - Fun!! The kids loved it. All you will need is to fill up the car with gas before you turn off the main highway - fill up the coolers with food and beverages - and be ready for a wonderful, quiet stay. I can imagine a large family choosing to spend Thanksgiving or Christmas at this wonderful location - a fabulous get away for just being together. I highly recommend this getaway, and hope to getaway to it again soon myself.

Were do I start? First of all the house was awesome!! Very clean and lots of room and we loved the remote location. Our kids had lots of things to do and never once said they were bored! We enjoyed the hot tub the fires at night. I never knew there was that many stars out at night! Lots of things to do in the area - trails right outside your door; beautiful views. The lakes were great. Our family has been to a few vacation homes over the years and I would have to say this ranks as one of the best we have ever been to!! I recomend this place for someone who just wants to get away from it all! We will be back in the Fall! Thank you Pat and Lee for sharing with us this little piece of heaven!! Love the welcoming music and your gift basket!

The perfect mix of camp and accomodation
The perfect mix of camp and accomodation
We were needing a real getaway where we could enjoy the accommodations of home while being deep in the woods. A wood burning stove, good hiking, activities for the kids and and not being bothered by cell phones were requirements. We found all that and more at the Cottage at Hemlock Grove and we plan to return, next time with more family and friends as the cabin and bunkhouse can comfortably fit a surprising number of people. We had 10 people, ages 4 - 61, and never felt crowded. The house and kitchen are well stocked which is good in case you forgot to bring something from home. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the water pressure (for showers) was excellent. The front and back porches and the hot tub are very nice places to relax, as is the living room by the wood burning stove. Plenty of square footage to keep a large group comfortable but not so big that it doesn't feel cozy. Hiking was really fun as there are many miles of trails and old logging roads that apparently never leave the 300-acre property so you can be somewhat confident that you won't get lost as long as you follow the provided trail maps and have some sense about you. :) Hemlock Grove was a gem and we plan to return!
