                      Car: Recommended

A charming riverfront cottage in a quaint French village, La Maison Blanche in Cabrerets is on the pilgrim route Santiego de Compostella & only 8 minutes from St Cirq Lapopie, the winner of 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France' for 2012.

Cabrerets, in the unspoilt Lot region, welcomes you with its lazy meandering river Le Cele & towering limestone cliffs. Clinging to the rock face is the legendary Château de Diable from the 9th century.

A row of houses adjoin the rock face between the mountain and the river, “La Maison Blanche” is one of them. Beautifully situated, the house is only a stones throw from the water.

Nearby is Pech Merle, caves that are world famous for their ancient paintings (discovered in 1922 by our neighbour's father Monsieur Andre David & friend).

The spectacular scenery showcased by the Tour de France surrounds Cabrerets. In fact, the Tour passed through Cabrerets in 2011, and nearby in the previous few years as well.

So much to see and do! Visit the nearby fresh food markets, brocantes for antiques or the fabulous 'vide greniers', bric-a-brac markets held every Sunday & public holidays in a village nearby.

Explore the nearby medieval village of St Cirq Lapopie, perched on the cliffs overlooking the Lot River. A haven for artists & artisans, the perfect place to buy a beautiful painting, sculpture or piece of jewelry.

Canoe & kayak hire is available locally - Le cele and Le Lot are peaceful and picturessque. No motor boats to spoil the peace!

Bring or hire a bike, the area is renowned for its cycling - think Tour de France! Great for casual and serious riders.

Guided activities include rock climbing, abseiling, parachuting & hiking. For scuba divers, caving is popular in Le Cele in nearby Marcillhac.

Visit vineyards or take a guided wine tour. The area is famous for its strong Cahors 'reds'.

Try the local goat's cheese or 'cabecou' at a nearby goat farm, or visit a local producer of 'fois gras' or 'confit de canard'.

There are several restaurants in the village & nearby that serve wonderful regional food. See for yourself where Jamie Oliver filmed his recent documentary in France - Lalbenque for truffles, the boucherie at Limogne, the restaurant Auberge Lou Bourdie at Bach and the special food market at Cahors.

Pinic on the river banks, swim in the Cele or laze on the beach at the 'moulin' 200 metres down river.

Visit the pottery in Cabrerets and watch the potter at work - he creates wonderful colorful pottery pieces.

Go fishing in Le Cele, outside your front door. Trout fishing is popular up-river.

Nearby is Equestre du Pech Merle which offers horse riding. Further afield, within 1 - 1.5 hours drive are Rocamadour, the caves 'Gouffre de Padirac', medieval Sarlat, Figeac, Toulouse, Albi....chateaux, abbeys, market places, bastide towns, rivers, lakes.......!!

You will never want to leave!

                      Year Purchased: 2006

About: We are an Australian couple who went on a 3-month holiday to France in 2006 and surprised ourselves, & our family & friends, by buying a house one morning over breakfast - and it wasn't even for sale! We were staying in La Maison Blanche by chance (we had booked elsewhere but it fell through last minute), fell in love with the house and village and made an offer to the owner. Not one regret - we have spent 3 - 4 wonderful months there every year for the past 6 years, sharing it with family and friends, having adventures, making new friends and learning to speak French. It is the life many dream about - and we are living it! Why don't you share it?

                      Why Cabrerets:
We live in a beautiful area of Australia, in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne Victoria. Our property is 115 years old so we obviously love the history and charm of older properties. Now we have two old houses, very different from each other but both in lovely parts of the world. We aim to avoid the coldest months in both countries - well-worth the long trip from down-under!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
We have never written a blog but often read of others living their dreams. Well, we live ours! The charming village of Cabrerets crouches beneath the soaring limestone cliffs of the Valley du Cele and overlooks the serene Cele River. We awaken to the birds & ducks greeting the day and look out over the foot of the bed to the green riverbank on the opposite side of the river. A short walk (or ride, we have bikes) to the boulangerie for a 'pain au raisin' or 'flute de compagne' (or both) and home to breakfast under our own arbour of grapevines. Our charming neighbour Monsieur Roger wishes us a 'bon apetite' and thus the day begins. Friends drop by for un cafe, plans are made to visit a market or vide grenier, go for a bike ride along the river or to expend a little more energy and ride up on the causse. Perhaps a picnic on the riverbank followed by a lazy swim. Every weekend we enjoy a 'vide grenier' (bric-a-brac market - think French linen!) in a nearby village. Maybe a trip to a nearby winery for some serious tasting, a meander in St Cirq Lapopie nearby or a little bit farther afield to a chateau or abbey. We love the availability of fresh food, and local produce like the 'cabecou' or goat's cheese, foi gras, confit de canard, truffles and saffron. Our big oven has cooked many a meal, shared by friends & family - or eaten in peace by ourselves. If the weather is unkind & cool, we cosy up to our wood-fired 'poile', read a book, watch TV (yes, English satellite & French TV) or one of the many DVDs we have collected in France. Such a wonderful life and we offer you the opportunity to experience it for yourselves.
