As we are new to VRBO we have no reviews yet on this site. Here is a sampling of what people who have stayed with us have said:
Beautiful mountain retreat
My husband and I stayed at The Stables for a week and it was truly a home away from home. Russ and Linda were delightful hosts, and gave great recommendations for specifics on what we were interested in doing. We rode the train, did a 4X4 mountain tour, rode ATVs, toured Mesa Verde National Park, hiked and relaxed. The kitchen and grill were perfect since we love to cook. The country was peaceful and great to take an after-dinner or morning walk. I would recommend The Stables to any couple coming to this area - it is well worth it! We are now inspired to build our own cabin back home someday.
Here's a peaceful wooded retreat that you won't want to leave! We were the first to spend a month at The Stables--wish it could have been longer! Linda and Russ did so much to make our stay delightful;? they couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. The Stables, designed by the Heatons themselves, is gorgeous and just the right size for two. It has all the comforts of home. We loved relaxing on the front porch in the evening, enjoying the quiet surroundings and observing the wildlife that abounds in the area. The location is ideal: whether you wish to spend a day shopping in Durango, fly fishing the San Juan, or exploring Mesa Verde, you'll find everything within a reasonable distance.?? We hope to return to The Stables some day.
A welcome retreat
Beginning with Linda's personal and friendly emails to the consideration to detail on the cottage, it's clear the Heatons are dedicated to the enjoyment of their guests' stay at The Stables. Although the 25 minute drive to their property from Durango makes it slightly inconvenient, the excitement of driving 'home' in the evenings and counting up to 100 mule deer along the way makes it all worthwhile. Day trips to Mesa Verde, Pagosa Springs, and passage on the narrow gauge railroad to Silverton are easy and recommended. We thoroughly enjoyed being on the Heaton's beautiful property and only wished we had had more days to enjoy it rather than running off to see the sights each day during our limited stay.
Wow - what a great experience we had on our week 'getaway' from the Texas heat in August. The facilities were much nicer than we anticipated and Linda/Russ were terrific. Everything was in pristine condition and fit our needs to a tee. The casual atmosphere Linda & Russ created was perfect for us.
Wonderful hospitality, great vacation!
The Stables is a perfect place for those wanting to have a relaxing, quiet place to stay, yet be close enough to Durango to enjoy all it has to offer. The Heatons are fantastic hosts, and know a lot about the area and its history. The cabin is extremely comfortable and roomy. We have been to this region many times and this visit was one of our best trips we've ever had. We would love to return and stay for a longer time!

Beautiful cabin-esk guesthouse in a lovely secluded location. Off the beaten path. Excellent romantic get-away! A bit of a drive to town(~20-25 min)on packed dirt road. Lots of space with all the necessary (and more!) amenities. Owners very kind and interested in their guests' comfort...they even got some shots of us at the local race!

The owners of the stables are great to share their piece of heaven with everyone. This place is the perfect country get away near Durango. The owners are very accommodating and have everything in this cozy get away nearly perfectly set up. The owner she was so very helpful in even giving ideas on places to go and things to do. She made my proposal idea become a reality and we will always remember these awesome people and their great place.

Year Purchased: 2012
About the owner: Linda and Russ retired to Colorado in 2002. For 10 years they remodeled the main house and recently built the guest house. The guest house is their ode to long term healthcare (hopefully not too soon!), but in the meantime they maintain it as a short term rental.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
The Stables Guest House is all about peace and quiet and nature. The Heatons had horses log the land for the wood and then a portable sawmill brought in to saw the lumber. They tried when possible to use low impact construction. If you appreciate a cozy retreat, this is it!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
This is not mainstream lodging. If you appreciate something a bit unique then by all means The Stables is a treat. Russ and Linda have created a warm, artistic and creative treat for you. Nestled in the woods and away from crowds, it is a retreat both close to adventure and far from city lights.
