We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Lucertola. Colin and Luisa were great, very helpful. We grilled and used the pizza oven all the time looking out over the beautiful Tuscan countryside watching the sunset. My favorite time was in the pool gazing out over the mountainside. It took us a few days to master the hairpin turns leading up to the property, but well worth it when we arrived. The property was very clean and well equipped. We took day trips to Portofino, Montalcino and of course Pisa and Lucca. Very good home base for what we wanted to see.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We had the most wonderful fortnight at La Lucertola. The house was lovely, well-equipped and very comfortable and the view over the Pisan plain to the sea beyond stunning. The pool was a much-needed respite at a time when temperatures hit 40 degrees. Once up the rather challenging road (hairpin bends all the way and a somewhat bumpy surface - it's doable but some of us, prone to vertigo, elected to walk part or all of the way on most return journeys), it's a blissfully peaceful place to sit and admire the view, the birds, the scent of wild herbs and the hot pink of the bouganvillea, while sipping local wine. It's also perfectly placed for trips to some of Italy's loveliest cities, Florence, San Gimignano, Siena or, even closer, Lucca and, of course, Pisa itself. Colin, Luisa and Max were great hosts, friendly and helpful when you needed them and not remotely in your face the rest of the time, while their cats Reg and Bessie are star turns. And for our son there was also the glory of Colin's recording studio, which was guitar-playing teenage boy heaven. If they'll have us, we'll be back.Did you find this review helpful? A semi-detached house on a hill with stunning views over Pisa (with the leaning tower in the distance). Good sized 2 bedroomed house, nicely decorated in a rustic style with all modcons including washing machine, dishwasher, TV with DVD. Comfy beds and 2 bathrroms one with bath and one with shower. Clean and well maintained with separate gated pool area. Fantastic location equidistant from Pisa and Lucca approx 9km and within 45 min drive of the beach. Friendly owners in separate house available with help and advise if needed. Lovely local restaurants. We ate out most nights and weren't disappointed. We visited Pisa, Lucca, Florence (recommend train to Florence as parking a nightmare) and a water park approx an hour away(can't remember name). No bad points and would definitely return.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We stayed at Lucertola for 5 nights after a friends wedding nearby. We absolutely loved the place, set in the Tuscan Hillside with stunning views of the surrounding countryside, Pisa etc. Colin, Luisa and Max are lovely, extremely welcoming and helpful. The farmhouse was very well equipped with everything for a comfortable stay.............including a huge box of toys which our 2 year old son loved, it kept him well entertained. Externally there is a patio with shade and table, a perfect spot to catch all day sunshine and take in the view. We had access to a veg and herb garden, which given the time of year meant plenty of free (and delicious) salad. All in all, 5/5, lovely stay, we will definitely hope to return again one day.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We spent a week at this holiday farm house and it was a wonderful holiday. The layout, locatiosn and facilities listed are exactly what you get. The house is on top of a hill so you get fabulous views into the valley and beyond. You can get a glimpse of the leaning tower from the house!!Very well maintained and clean property. Collin and luisa are great hosts - available to help without being intrusive. Their local knowledge is particularly helpful. The farmhouse is within easy driving of Pisa airport and city, Florence and at a push Sienna. Groceries are available in the local villages and there is a big Carrefour about 15 minutes drive. While public transport is available from the village, ideally you do need a car to get around. If you are looking for a quiet, clean, well located farmhouse - thsi is it.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Had a brilliant week - weather ranging from very hot to an amazing thunderstorm in Lucca yesterday - the log burner came into it's own drying soaking wet clothes! Managed a day trip to Venice ( 2 hours by train from Florence ) as an 'excursion', otherwise had a very lazy week exploring the local area. The highlight - watching the Hoopoe that landed on the fence by the swimming pool as we arrived home yesterday! Many thanks to Colin and Luisa for such a lovely place to stay. If you are after a relaxing hideaway with stunning views yet one that has easy access to the beauty and towns of Tuscany then this place should be your choice. La Lucertola exceeded our expectations and our week in Tuscany was both relaxing -lying in the sun enjoying the view and the peace- whilst also being an adventure- the location is just right for exploring the area in that it is close to Pisa, Lucca and Florence. The owners provide an exceptional service - they are friendly and couldn't be more helpful with directions and information, yet they also know when to leave you to relax and enjoy yourselves. The accomodation is both comfortable and well eqipped whilst also being very clean, tastefully decorated and spacious. The drive up to the farmhouses takes some nerve at first but the journey is worth it. Our holiday was a real treat - our first visit to the area and our first "holiday" without the children ( who were happily ski-ing in the Italian Alps.) It had been much anticipated and more than lived up to our expectations. We ate out at the local pizzeria which was friendly and good value for money and also enjoyed eating in as the kitchen was well eqipped and we ate al fresco enjoying the view. We hired a car which made the exploring easier but we also took the train to Florence which proved straight forward from San Guiliamo Terme where the parking was free and safe! The whole ethos of the place just induces you to relax and unwind while you are awestruck by the beauty of the area - the rosy twilight and even the night sky were breathtaking. We visited in late April and were blessed with glorious weather - hot and sunny enough to live outdoors. We needed jumpers in the cooler evenings but it was still pleasant. I would recommend La Lucertola without reservation whether you are a couple ( a discount is given for parties of 2) or a family. Theres plenty to do but it is just right for relaxing.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

La Lucertola is in a glorious hills side position above the hamlet of Pugnano with views to Pisa and its leaning tower about 8-10 miles in the distance. The property is immaculately clean and provides for all of your holiday needs. Set in a hillside with olive and orange trees there is amble room for the younger and more energetic ones to explore. The excitement of finding and chasing lizards seems to have no end for the kids. If you're not the most confident of drivers then La Lucertola may not be for you since the drive up and down the hillside can be a bit of a challenge, but you do get used to it. Equally if you dont have full mobility it could be quite hard getting around the land that the property is set in. Pugnano is a hamlet and for provisions the villages of Ripifrata and Molina can be accessed by car in only a handful of minutes. Alternatively, walking there in the morning to get fresh bread kick starts your day and allows you to savour all the bird song and noises of this lovely area of Tuscany. We found La Lucertola to be an ideal base for all the places we wanted to visit. Pisa and Lucca are 15-20 minutes away and a great day can be had around visiting the tower or walking/cycling around the ramparts in the cities respectively. A little further afield the amazing city of Florence and contrasting hills side village of San Gimignano can be accessed in a little over an hour. To the north you can easily get into the lower reaches of the mountains in 45-60 minutes and we enjoyed the town of Barga. In all a great property with fantatic views and very well position to explore coast, village, town and city.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The property is well located for touring the Tuscany area. It sits high up with wonderful stunning views over Pisa. The accommodation is very well presented, spotlessly clean, well appointed and laid out, and includes everything you'll need. Very safe. Our two 9 year old boys played for hours with the owner's son and the son of the neighbouring couple, and had many great adventures in the hills surrounding the property. When asked what was the best part of the holiday, they both said playing in the hills! We went at the beginning of April and the weather was really great. Day trips to Forte di Marme, Florence, Lucca and even Abetone (end of season skiiing) were all really easy. Would easily recommend this to everyone, and may well return. Colin and Luisa were extremely friendly and helpful, and you feel more like a guest of their's rather than a renter. A real find.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

What a fabulous place to stay! The challenging drive up the hill to the accomodation is rewarded with stunning views across the plain below towards the sea in the distance. The view of the iconic leaning tower 7 or 8 kilometers in the distance never gets boring. The location is ideal for trips to Lucca (a very pleasent walled city only 20 minutes drive), San Gimiganano (a must for anyone!) and Florence. We enjoyed our stay at La Lucertola very much. Peace, tranquility and all of the conveniences required. Many thanks!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Forget Florence, La Lucertola's rooms all have a view which is simply stunning. An easy half hour drive or direct bus from Pisa Airport or Railway Station (+ 5 minute brisk steep walk => recommend 4x4 and confident driver!). Carrefour conveniently en route. Best served by San Giuliano Terme trains (direct, frequent, 15 mins to both Lucca and Pisa). Immaculately clean, very comfortable beds, loads of space and well equipped. Super walks directly from your farmhouse, butterfly and dragonfly heaven and birdwatchers will be fully occupied. Fresh early September we had fresh basil, rosemary, parsely, tomatoes, courgettes and chillis to add to our frequent meals! Luisa, Colin and Max are excellent hosts, always available to help and we could not have asked for smoother arrangements. Wish we were still there, will be back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We arrived in Tuscany in the middle of the night, which meant that we got a little lost enroute, as the path to the farmhouse does not stand out well in the darkness. However, even though we had to give our hosts a couple of calls in the middle of the night, they were extremely patient and helpful and eventually we found our way up the winding path to La Lucertola. The next morning the sun was shining and we could see the beautiful views across the valley to Pisa and beyond to the Mediterranean and understood why the path up to the farmhouse was so steep and winding. It is an idyllic setting. The environment is very peaceful and relaxing. All you can hear is birdsong, the occasional sound of a farm vehicle or the braying of a donkey while breakfasting on the patio. We went out everyday because there is so much to see and do within easy distance of the cottage - Pisa, Viareggio, Lucca, Vecchiano, Florence, San Guilano Terme, Marina di Pisa. But when we came back in the late afternoon we sat, relaxed and enjoyed a glass of wine whilst watching the sun go down over the Apuan Alps. The farmhouse is well equipped, comfortable and welcomingly cool in the heat of the day. The owners are friendly and helpful but unobtrusive. There is only one comment I would make about something that I feel was overlooked - as we arrived in the middle of the night we had no milk or bread to make our first morning's breakfast - so a welcome pack on arrival would have been very helpful. This did not spoil our overall experience of the holiday but would have been "the icing on the cake". We really enjoyed our Tuscan holiday and would love to come back again. Thank you Luisa and Colin.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Many thanks Sue for your very kind review! In response to Sue's comment regarding bread and milk - we are very happy to do an initial shop for people which we then settle upon arrival. Simply send a shopping list to me a few days prior to arrival and I shall do my best to get everything that is on the list in for you. I hope that this is helpful - Luisa

We stayed at La Lucertola in late May for a week's break with two of our children (girls, 17 and 19), and had an excellent, laid-back time. Situated in the hill side, you could see the plain stretching out to Pisa (the leaning tower of) with in the far distance, the cranes at the port of Livorno. Closer by, hill side full of olives and trees, and down below, the old buildings of Pugnano. Half way between Pisa and Lucca. Everything was half an our away, including the shops and beach. Florence and further south are visitable within one day. Pool was great in the late afternoon after a day's sightseeing. Fireflys gave a light show at dusk. House was wonderful and very well equiped - books, TV, towels, clothes pegs ....... Hosts, Luisa and Colin were friendly and there when you needed them. House was covered in flowering Jasmine which hit you when you opened the shutters in the morning. The drive up to the house starts in a green, narrow dell, followed by a fairy step climb. At times it feels like rally driving, but you are soon there. And what a view! We'll be back....Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Thankyou for a fantastic holiday. We have fallen in love with Tuscany and will definitely be back! Can't believe we've had a holiday with a 23 month old toddler and yet feel so relaxed! The house is great and we've particularly enjoyed sitting on the balcony and experimenting with teh wood fired oven. Reg the cat has been a firm favourite with our little one and Max's old toys were very welcome too. The views from the hosue are spectacular and will never be forgotten. We've enjoyed visitng Pisa, Lucca and San Miniato and recommend Ciapuno's in Molina di Quosa for fantastic food shopping - foodie heaven! I'd always heard how wonderful Tuscany was. I now think that is a complete understatement, it's simply the best place in Europe! But I also think one can only truly experience Tuscany if they see do it from La Lucertola which is far the best choice anyone can go for. It's just the place to be. We spent a wonderful relaxing week at La Lucertola and I would describe it as the perfect Tuscan holiday villa in which to unwind. The listings were accurate and the properties were well maintained and very well cleaned. The owners were attentive but unobtrusive and full of useful tips and advice on local facilities and places of interest. We spent a day in Lucca and Pisa and walked in the hills behind the chalets which provided cultural interest away from La Lucertola. I have recommended these properties to both friends and family as an ideal location to rest and enjoy stunning views in beautiful surroundings and well appointed Villas.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our group of three adults and three children stayed here during June 2009. We really enjoyed it -- boys loved the pool and playing with Max, location was good, easy driving access to other Tuscan cities and towns...and you can see the Leaning Tower in the distance. Quiet and so relaxing. Owners are superb to deal with, so accommodating. Only downside was the switchbacks up the hill, but you get used to it!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: This is a good and honest appraisal of our lovely facilities by a delightful American family based in Germany, used to town and wide lane motorway driving and who drove down in their own people carrier - a big vehicle. By 'switchbacks', they mean the corners. The road is a single lane and possibly slightly better suited to smaller vehicles although this depends entirely upon the driver. When we restored the property, 8 years ago, we had big open back Ford Transit vans coming up and down the hill regularly and without a problem. As they say ' you get used to it!' and once here the views are spectacular and the peace and quiet is magical.

I spent a fantastic week in La Lucertola in spring with my family. Such a stunning location - from the bedroom we stayed in you could see the Pisa skyline including the Leaning Tower from bed as you woke up in the morning. It's just a short drive to Pisa one way, and Luca (which is beautiful), a stunning beach and a very quirky an retro beach resort in other directions. We also spent a fantastic day in Florence (easy to drive to but you can also catch the train). There are two little villages close to the villa with lovely restaurants and delis and we visited the gelateria in San Gimiano every day! Luisa and her family - including cat! - are lovely and very helpful. Only downside (apart from us going too early in the year to use the pool) was the drive from the main room to the villa. It's very steep with two hairpin bends which means you'd be a brave person to venture out at night!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We arrived as Colin and Luisa, our welcoming hosts, were harvesting there olive trees. They generously asked us if we would like to accompany them to the olive pressing factory. The girls were fascinated by the process of turning olives to oil and we all enjoyed the tasting at the end with some of Colins delicious home made bread. It was a great experience of a local Italian farming tradition which added something special to our holiday. La Lucertola is a great place to stay. The house is well equipped and furnished in a simple stylish way, a breath of fresh air to spend some time free from the clutter and distraction of every day life. And there is fresh air in abundance, the view is superb, another much needed antidote to city life. The house is very well located, having a feeling of being away from it all while at the same time being very close to Pisa and Lucca and only half an hour from the coast. Colin and Luisa pointed us in the direction of some interesting pituresque villages as well as some very good local restaurants. We spent an enjoyable afternoon at the hot outdoor baths at Cascianna terme an hours drive away, and enjoyed the medieval ambience of San Gimiangno. There's so much to do, we didn't make it to Florence or Siena. A weeks not nearly enough to begin to explore the area, we'll have to come back , if only to have another go at the wood burning pizza oven, now that we know the secret.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners, sightseeing.

A truly beautiful and peaceful setting with breathtaking views, ideal for a 'chill-out' holiday. Both farmhouses are very clean and well equipped, beautifully maintained. The owners are friendly and helpful(nothing too much trouble) and live on site which is a bonus as they are accessible for help but dont interfere with your holiday. This year 2010 we are returning to La Lucertola for a holiday, this will be our third visit, recommendation to everyone! Sightseeing in Lucca with its historical buildings, city wall and architecture and of course shopping is wonderful. A visit to Pisa, especially the leaning tower and cathedral are not to be missed. Both are only a short drive away. A day out in historical Florence, a train ride from the local station, via Pisa, is also an experience not to be missed.Sunshine and swimming, generally chilling out, are all there at La Lucertola to be enjoyed without going anywhere. Wonderful location!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: This is a fair and honest description of La Lucertola. We strive to maintain the highest standards in the presentation of this truly special place. We always seek to help our guests in any way possible without ever getting in the way. Living in a separate house behind it's own gate, we can be detached and never in people's hair. We find, after 9 years of operating, that being on site often is useful for our guests - recommendations for restaurants, tips on where to go etc. Our Italian is fluent and we know the area - a real bonus.

It is rare to find such perfect holiday accommodation in beautiful surroundings with owners who struck just the right balance between being available if needed but for the most part kept a low profile, which made for a great relaxing,atmosphere.......and this place is great for relaxing! The house was clean, tastefully decorated, well equipped and, thankfully, lacked all those unecessary frills and tat you seem to get with so many holiday cottages!! There is so much to see within easy striking distance, (see the description which is 100% accurate) but much of our time was spent chilling on the terrace, wine in hand, gazing over the top of the olive trees to Pisa in the distance. Top view! And as for the drive up the track up to the house..... I used to look forward to it!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We visited La Lucertola a few years ago and it was quite simply enchanting. Stunning views of the surrounding countryside and you can also see the Leaning Tower in the distance - amazing. The house was very comfortable and the hosts were extremely personable. There's lots to do with the beach a short trip away and the wonderful town of Lucca nearby too. The best bit? Sipping wine on the terrace whilst drinking in that amazing view - highly recommended!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
