For creative projects, or just a good rest, we have two charming and tastefully decorated homes in the picturesque village of Lourmarin, in the Luberon National Park just north of Aix-en- Provence.
These 17th and 19th century village accommodations are ideal as longer-term retreats - great for writers and artists with projects to complete. They both offer the sophistication of an artsy environment without any of the inconveniences of a big city. With 14 restaurants, numerous galleries, cafés and shops, this is a very lively, yet unspoilt village.
Our 'Petite Maison' is a 37m² 17th century village house located right on the Place de L'Eglise in the very heart of Lourmarin, officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France. This house comfortably accomodates a couple.
Our Loft, is an elegant 45m² town house apartment, with very high ceilings and decorative 19th century plaster mouldings. It is located above the Café de l'Ormeau, on the main village square
Lourmarin is an excellent winter retreat which has attracted many writers and painters, notably Albert Camus, Henri Bosco and Didier Brousse. Unlike many of the nearby villages- it remains lively and busy throughout the year. Marseille international airport and the TGV stations in Aix and Avignon are all less than 50 minutes away.

We happened on the town of Lourmarin and this gem of a gite when searching for a hill town with history and character from which we could do day trips in Provence. What a find! The apartment is lovely and clean; quite spacious for two. Right in the center of the village, it situated over a popular cafe. One night there was some noise but for the most part, Lourmarin is a quiet residential village. The streets are blocked to traffic during the day when it fills with shoppers and visitors - everyone seems to be carrying a bagette and smiling. A lovely epicerie is less than a block away and soon we too were feasting on cheeses and olives, drinking local wine and watching the people stroll by from our front windows. There are several wonderful restaurants within a few blocks and we spent an entire day exploring the castle and wandering the 'secret' garden passageways around the town's perimeter. We never met the owners but they did provide a wonderful booklet with suggestions for day trips such as to Gordes and Roussilon.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you so much. Come back again, and stay for longer - there's still a lot to explore and do around here!

Owner info
About the owner: We have lived in Lourmarin for over twenty years. We have raised our children there, and have been running our rental business for fourteen years. We were both originally English teachers (one American, one English) and one of our great pleasures is to share our love of France and in particular our own corner of Provence.
Why the Owner Chose Lourmarin:
For different reasons, we have both known Lourmarin since the 1970's. We both fell in love with the village - and it seemed to us the right place to live, to work and to raise a family. It's just not because it's an exceptionally pretty village, which it is. People here are friendly, open, welcoming to outsiders such as ourselves, and proud of their Provencal heritage. Albert Camus chose to live here, amongst other writers and artists, and is buried in the village cemetery. We consider Lourmarin home.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our two village apartments are unique. The Petite Maison dates from the 17th century, and has oak-beamed ceilings and not a right angle in sight. Unusually for a village house it is light, with windows on two sides, and a delightful, sheltered terrace overlooking the Catholic church and a fountain. Le Loft is on the first (upper) floor of a solid 19th century 'maison bourgeoise', or town house. It has high ceilings, with beautiful plaster mouldings, and large casement windows. It is right in the centre of the village, on a square, above a café.
