Santa Chiara is the name of the old 17th convent built at the top of the hill outside Siena,and completely restored. It is a big building with three apartments other than the owner's home. It is a uniquely located country estate on a hillside just outside the walls of Siena: It is about 15 minutes walk from the Campo, the shell-shaped mediaeval square at the heart of the city in which the Palio is run twice a year. Throughout a gate and a tree-lined drive you reach a large garden with views towards the city on one side and over the Tuscan countryside on the other. It is surrounded by 100000 yards with olive trees that produce an excellent extra vergine olive oil. guests can go all around the estate in a very nice walking, resting under a centenary oak in wooden chairs. There is a nice swimming pool and a tennis court yard.

It is a nice apartment, ideal for a couple or for a family with one child. It is on two floors: on the ground floor there is a large room divided in two spaces by a characteristic old break arch: the dining and the sitting space; the kitchen is very spacious ; on the firs floor there is the bedroom with a closet, and the bathroom with shower. Outside there are tables in the garden under the trees, where one can eat, read and rest. You can walk in the fields all around the hill between the olive trees in property, watching roe-deer, pheasant and hares. You can rest and relax in the swimming pool.

This apartment was a welcome respite from the hustle of the city and served as the home base for trips to neighboring cities and villages such as Florence (1 hour by bus) and San Gimignano (1 hour by bus). It is an easy 15 minute walk to the larger grocery (there is a small grocery within a 5 minute walk) and the famous Campo Square which we enjoyed several times, especially at night. Children run and play, adults sit or lie down on the bricks, bells chime, people eat at the surrounding outdoor restaurants..... ahhh The apartment is very clean and completely furnished with everything you need. Most important for travelers is a comfortable bed and we were very pleased with this one. We were welcomed with a loaf of bread, their own olive oil, and sausage for the first breakfast. There is a spectacular view from every window. Anna is a very helpful manager and lives on the property. Her English is excellent! We took the SENA Bus from Rome (Termini Station) to Siena (station with lift). Then caught Bus 17, changed to Bus 2 and got off at the grocery by our destination. If I had it to do over though, we would take a taxi from the Siena train/bus station to the apartment because of the crowded local bus with luggage - 15-20 euros.Did you find this review helpful?
