Mullett Lake house description

Our Lake House is located on the southeastern corner of Mullett Lake on Pigeon Bay approximately 1 mile east across the lake from the mouth of the Indian River. The sunset views and quiet neighborhood on our dead-end street make for a relaxing place to stay on your vacation.

The house is a single story ranch with three bedrooms, two baths, a full laundry room, a well equipped kitchen and a “Northern Michigan style” sun porch. The open Great Room with a vaulted ceiling and hand crafted stone fireplace provides space for relaxing and eating meals. A large table with seating for 8-10 is set up to enjoy meals (or to play cards and board games) while viewing the lake. A second table that is folded behind the couch can seat up to six more people.
( Possibly more if you are little and you use the bench. See photos) For outdoor dining on the patio, several tables and chairs are provided. The full kitchen has plenty of counter space. A breakfast bar with seating separates the kitchen from the great room. A large window that looks onto the lake provides a great view while you’re in the kitchen.

The cottage has three bedrooms. The lakeside bedroom has a queen size four poster bed. The center bedroom has two full size beds and the street side bedroom has a queen size bed and a twin bed. The smaller couch in the living room is a full size sleeper sofa that you can set up if you need more sleeping space. The fireplace has gas logs and can be started with a turn of the knob for cool evenings.

The cottage is situated on a lot with 120 feet of lake frontage. The lakeside yard is grassy, flat and ends at a seawall. There are plenty of trees to enjoy shade when needed but there are also spots to set up lounge chairs for sun bathing during the day as well. A fire pit is available lakeside to enjoy in the evening. (Firewood is not supplied.) An 82 foot dock extends into the lake and has a ladder for climbing into and out of the water. At the seawall the water is approximately 2 feet deep, At the end of the dock the water is a little more than 3 feet deep. The water is relatively shallow – approximately 5 feet deep for over a hundred yards before dropping off. The lake bottom is mostly soft sand, however “water shoes” are highly recommended as there may be stones and driftwood on the bottom.

We have a 3600 pound “ShoreStation ” boat lift available for your use during the summer months (with advance notice) suitable for up to 21 foot long Outboard and stern drive speedboats. (If you are interested please send details of your boat (Make, Length, Weight, Motor etc.), to verify if you can use the Shore station, as it is not suitable for Mid Engine boats and could cause damage to the propeller shaft of a Mid Engine Boat.)

The water in the house is supplied by an Artesian well. Back in the day, the waters of Mullett Lake were thought to be conducive to good health. People would travel to the resort towns around the lake, like people would go to a spa resort now-a-days. We can not claim anything about our water concerning it's health benefits. But it is very soft. No bad hair days due to hard iron water like that of some of the other lake towns.

Mullet Lake is part of the famous “Michigan Inland Waterway”. This 45 mile long waterway connects Lake Huron, Mullett Lake, Burt Lake, Crooked Lake and Pickerel Lake.

Taking boat trips to the various lakeside restaurants on Mullet Lake and Burt Lake can be a nice break while you are boating the waterway. The Hackamatack Inn, the Pineview Restaurant and the Bridge Restaurant are located 10 miles north on the Cheboygan River. A short two mile trip across the lake to the public dock in Topinabee will get you within walking distance of The Breakers Bar and Grill, On the North East side of Burt Lake you will find a great dock to park your boat while you eat at Hoppies Tavern located at the end of Mullett Burt Road, a Northern Michigan landmark with great burger.

If you don’t have your own boat, daily and weekly rentals of Kayaks, Canoes, Paddle Boats, Row Boats, Jet Skis, Speedboats and Pontoon boats are available at the Tobinabee Sports Center at exit 313 on I-75. Several Marinas on Indian River also provide daily rental of pontoon boats, these include The Landings, Howes Marina, and Burt Lake Marina. The closest boat launches for trailered boats are at the marinas on the Indian River. The Public Lake access site at the end of our street is too shallow to launch anything other than Jet Skis, PWCs, or small fishing rowboats.

Our cottage is located a little more than 5 miles from I-75. We are only a 25 minute drive to Petoskey or Harbor Springs and about 30 minutes away from Mackinaw City. The excellent location allows for day trips to a variety of northern Michigan travel destinations. Go to Petoskey to shop the historic downtown district. Harbor Springs has wineries on the way to the Tunnel of Trees that offer an excellent Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Hard Cider. Take a ferry from Mackinaw City, to enjoy one of Michigan’s gems: Mackinaw Island. A destination closer to home, is the Cross in the Woods right in the small town of Indian River on Burt Lake. The “Rails to Trails” hiking pathway passes through Indian River, where you can walk, run or bicycle for miles – from Gaylord to Mackinac.

Our cottage is heated, so it can be enjoyed year-round. We love coming up to see the color in the fall. Spring is my favorite time to visit to see the wildlife that enjoy the bay when less boat traffic is present. (It is so quiet, I think it is the loons favorite time too.) As we are located on a bay, the waters are calmer than most of the lake, so it is perfect for canoe or kayak trips. In the winter there is plenty of places to ski or snowmobile near by. (Or ice fish right on the lake in front of the house!)

Come up to Mullett Lake to enjoy the crystal clear waters . Whether you come fall, winter, spring or summer, it is “Pure Michigan”!

We so enjoyed our stay at this beautiful Mullett Lake home! The furnishings were wonderful, the owners were very helpful, and the house had plenty of room. Three generations of our family enjoyed the sunsets, beautiful views of the lake, sitting around the campfire, and hearing loons every morning and evening. We were close to many cities, like Petoskey and Cheyboygan. We will be back!
