Marica house description
This is truly a dream location. Only an hour's drive from the 'Marvellous City' of Rio lies the safe yet bustling town of Marica and its 20 mile stretch of golden sandy beach. Along the beach are various communities to expore including Itaipuacu, Barra de Marica, Guaratiba, Cordeirinho and Ponta Negra. Our house, located on the beach at Guaratiba, is walled and gated and is in an area where the wealthy of Rio have their second homes, it's full of friendly locals, and the best thing is no hotels or skyrises here! A quiet beach where you can walk for miles, simply enjoying the feel of the sand between your toes, the sun on your face and the constant sound of the waves. You'll stay at a lovely detached house with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, a living and dining room, an eat-in kitchen, an outdoor barbecue area, a fenced-in private swimming pool with dolphin fountain, private driveway for parking, and a garden overlooking the beach which is just 3 steps down. The view is spectacular with 180 degree open Atlantic Ocean view. You can lie in bed against the padded headboard drinking your coffee or tea in the morning, watching the waves come in, or you can sit at the marble table in the evening sharing a glass of wine with your loved one, watching the incredible sunsets. How about a campfire on the beach at sunset and after dark when it's still 25 degrees Celsius? The house is beautifully furnished with black granite custom tables in the dining and living rooms, granite countertops and table in the kitchen, and granite or marble countertops in each of the 3 bathrooms. Buses can be caught into Marica centro (10km) a 2-minute walk away, or you can get a taxi or simply rent your own car. From Marica's bus station you can go anywhere in the Rio area: east to the famed Buzios, or for some of the best surfing in Brazil at Saquarema, or to Cabo Frio to play in the sand dunes; then to the west there's Niteroi and Rio de Janeiro with its amazing Statue of Christ standing atop Corcovado Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain. So much to see and do, yet in only an hour you can escape the noise and traffic of the city to the quiet of Guaratiba at Marica.

Beautiful! Wonderful time!
Beautiful! Wonderful time!
The owner is awesome to deal with. The lady who takes care of the property, and her husband were always very helpful. The garden in the front of the house is so well taken care of, and the view in the morning from the main bedroom window is just breathtaking. Having 3 bathrooms in the house, plus another in the BBQ area were a must! Being a Brazilian native myself, and from Rio, I've never been to Marica, and I don't even know why. It is a nice small town, close enough to other more popular nearby towns such as Cabo Frio and Buzios. My family and I loved the time spent there w/o being able to be reached from work. We made awesome memories on the beach, by going to play on the sand almost every single day we spent there. Thanks again, Caroline!

Thank you Caroline...what a great trip we had. Your home was such a treat and we both loved the authenticity of the neighborhood. Your home is quite lovely - the views, the peaceful atmosphere - what an amazing childhood your children have. Even your whistling neighbor (who caught tunes to whatever song vibrated its way to his ear from my iPod as we packed and cleaned our final afternoon) creates fond memories. We loved the adventure...finding your home late at night and even trying to communicate with locals as we searched for internet access and directions to make our way up to Arraial do Cabo. Venicius is a doll and put us in touch with a local English school where I got to be part of an English teaching class (while David used their computer to search on the internet for directions). Venicius is attentive, delightful, caring, intelligent, friendly, and was a great asset to our trip. We met so many great people and saw so many memorable things...and are thrilled you let us stay at your home so that our adventure was expanded 1000%. We realize you had to go out of your way for our short stay, you worried about us, you communicated above and beyond to make sure our stay was nothing short of excellent. THANK YOU!!! Thank you for all the things you did that we will never ever know about (extra emails, conversations, time spent on the phone, costs, etc etc) to help our trip be so amazing. Thank you!! AGAIN, WE BOTH THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH!!!! I hope we can keep in touch... Gratefully, Debbie PS: Thank you for providing enough water, organizing Monica and Venicius, and welcoming us into your home.

Our party of four adults and one teen stayed at this lovely property for two weeks in August (winter in Brazil). For a bunch of Canadians it was the perfect time to visit - warm enough to swim in the ocean but cool enough to tour around comfortably. The house was a perfect size for us - three beds, three baths, nice sized kitchen and ample hammocks outside. It is very simply decorated but in keeping with the surroundings. It reminded us of summers at the cottage. We spent a great many hours playing cards in the loggia at the back of the house. The caretaker was welcoming and very helpful - he even showed us all how to bodysurf the Brazilian way. The beach here is amazing - it goes as far as the eye can see and is a few feet from the front of the house. Marica is a good jumping off point for visiting some wonderful towns - Cabo Frio, Buzios and Ponte Negra as well as Rio. A good GPS is a must! We felt very safe here and found the locals to be friendly and honest.

A local paradise, living like the Brazilians do
A local paradise, living like the Brazilians do
This piece of paradise with white sandy beaches is far from the hustle and bustel of the big city and crowds. We used no radio, TV or cell phone, just listened to the thunderous waves, the murmers of people playing on the sand and the occasional car on the dirt road. The days were hot and humid, perfect for living in a swimsuit and for dips in the sparkling pool. We took walks in the AM on the beach or to the lagoons and then relaxed. We did nothing and it was good. Our trip began with Marcos, a friendly taxi driver from Marica, picking us up from the Rio airport and stopping at the Princessa market to stock up on food and water for the week. Get lots of water. At the house, the friendly and helpful caretakers were there with a warm welcome. Their daughter in law translated into English the house directions. The comfortable master bedroom is air conditioned and overlooks the beautiful ocean. The house is immaculate, beautifully decorated and supplied everything we needed to cook and BBQ. We had no bugs or mosquitoes while we were there. We spent New year's Eve on the beach with the locals, watching fireworks and listening to groups singing and chanting. At midnight, fireworks went off all up and down the 25 miles of beach. The waves calmed enough to go into the water for the traditional way to let go of the old and bring in the new. On New year's Day, we watched the numerous kites swishing deftly around us. Every day after coffee on the patio, we walked to Guaratiba. Along the walk we saw beautiful trees, flowers, walled houses, horses, goats, egrets and small fishing boats. Nothing palatial or ostentatious. The small village of dirt roads had small cantinas with outside tables and small stores to pick up a few extras. It always felt very safe. Know you are going to Brazil and embrace the culture and simplicity of the area. Septic systems don't accept toilet paper and water can't be drunk from faucets.Water for the house is stored in a cistern and pumped up every few days to the housetop storage tank. Learn how to prime the pump. Shower water is heated by small heaters as it comes out of the top and worked fine. Because of the water system it is prudent to take short showers and conserve water. We did not bring a computer, but if we had,the caretakers brought a modem we could use. Stock up on food and water before you get here. We did not use the bus system, but it was close. Marcos was available for tours to Rio, only an hour away but world's apart.Enjoy!
