If you are looking for a beautifully decorating home with lovely gardens and a stunning view of the ocean, look no farther than Ledgewood by the Sea. We actually wanted to extend our stay but the home was booked. Watching lobster boats and loons as you sip your coffee each morning and walking the pebble beach looking for sea glass were just what we needed. My kids explored the seashore and then enjoyed the comforts of a hi-tech home equipped with a flat screen TV and extensive movie library. Can't wait to return.

We had a wonderful time at Ledgewood. Both the house and gardens were absolutely beautiful. The owners saw to every detail...the kitchen was well stocked, the bedrooms and baths were fresh and new and all had lovely linens, lots of books and guides about Acadia, Bar Harbor and surrounding areas. Perfect location, just minutes from the entrance to Acadia Nat'l Park, and less than 10 minutes to down town Bar Harbor. All in all a perfect vacation rental.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

(From our guestbook the week of October 15-22,205) Our 1st trip east was delightful! We were warmly welcomed (to Ledgewood) by fresh flowers, warm sun and a view to delight our eyes. Every day was an adventure - Camden a favorite town, and Chez Michelle a favorite eatery. The park and Jordan Pond - yummy. We were the antique queens and every shop and ice cream parlor was a delight. Each night was magic with the full and waning moon shining on the water, sharing the night sky with a million stars. Your home was our home and for that we thank you. You are very special people to share this warmth with strangers. Thank you.

(From our guestbook the week of September 17-24, 2005) Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us. We feel fortunate to have such a wonderful base from which to do our adventures. We loved the hikes in Acadia - Gorham Mountain was especially fun. We took a sunset carriage ride, but the best sunset was from Cadillac Mountain. We drove around the island stopping at many artists' studios (all of us buying pottery!) and at Southwest harbor, discovering Little Notch Cafe. We had lobster at Thurstons but our favorite dinner was at Havana and favorite breakfast at Two Cats. We also loved Shaw's Jewelry (and the art on the walls). This is a special place - warm and comfortable - and makes us feel very much at home. The outstanding landscaping and view wil be our first memory when we thank of Bar Harbor. We hope to return!

(From our guestbook the week of September 24-October 1, 2005) Ledgewood is such a beautiful, comfortable family home that we made our second annual fall vacation here. We come to hike Acadia, check out Bar Harbor, and sit by the water. Oh, and one more thing - stargazing! Bar Harbor's night skies are the only place on the Eastern seaboard where we can actually see the Milky Way. It's such a special treat. We dined on lobster at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound and had excellent pizza at Rosalie's in Bar Harbor. We drove out on the sand bar at low tide to Bar Island and hiked around. Even the two blustery, overnight storms were to our liking! (Real Maine coastal weather.) Thanks again for the beauty, comfort and serenity of your home.

(From our guestbook the week of October 1-8, 2005) Thank you so much for sharing your home, it is absolutely beautiful and so welcoming. We enjoyed the quietness of night and serenity of early morning. We sat outside drinking coffee while deer passed through. How we enjoyed searching for sea glass (finding a few small pieces) and wandering the shore when the tide was out. We visited Acadia several timesa and did sightseeing around the island. Everyone had a great, refreshing time. Your special touches to Ledgewood make it a truly comfortable stay.

(From our guestbook for the week of May 30-June 4, 2005) Dear Dawsons, Thank you for making our fifth year at Ledgewood so pleasurable. Ledgewood feels more like a home than a rental. It is always difficult to leave this wonderful place. Thank you for the popovers and tea at Jordan pond House. They were just delightful. (We welcomed them back for their fifth stay with a special treat!) We look forward to our next stay at Ledgewood.

(From our guestbook for the week of June 18-25, 2005) Dear Dawsons, WOW! Everything has exceeded our expectations. This is our first family (as adults) vacation - Dave and I and our children, Dave and wife Michelle, and our daughter Dana and her fiance Mike. We have felt at home in this wonderful and much loved home. There is something for everyone. I loved your Gull Rock Pottery and had to have some to bring home to Ohio. We drove to Hancock and bought 2 bunny pieces. Whenever I look at it I will always remember our wonderful vacation at Ledgewood.

(From our guestbook for the week of June 11-18, 2005) Dear Dawsons, Thanks for getting more TV channels! They came in handy given (a) the poor weather we experienced and (b) that a seizure-inducing cartoon is the only thing that keeps my two-year-old son from tearing a house apart brick by brick. Times have changed too - no more Jerry Springer and Kelly Rippa took over for Kathy Lee. You may also have noticed (from enclosed photo) we have two new additions to our family - almost 3 year-old Joseph (asleep) and 1 year-old Owen. Kristy (aka "pretty lady") and I are now married. My brother Jamie (aka "lousy golfer") has also grown up and has even managed to attract a good-looking member of the oposite sex (Lexy, aka, "miniature golf cheater"). Despite the weather we had, we still managed to have a great time, hitting all the major sites, going on long hikes, played golf, ate roughly five meals per day, and ultimately leaving significantly poorer, but refreshed and happy! Anyway, it was great - Thanks so much! (see comments from prior stay dated June 24, 2000)

Plenty of room for the five of us to spread out and relax after a long day of hiking and biking. As always the week flew by but we leave refreshed and relaxed from a great vacation. Looking forward to returning to Ledgewood in the future.

(From our guestbook the week of August 28, 2004) Dear Dawsons, Although we arrived in a downpour, the next seven days were perfect - with clear skies and no rain. Our vacation at your house was also perfect. I can't imagine renting a house that feels more like home. And the water view is spectacular. We spent many mornings having breakfast watching the lobster boats ply the waters - how beautiful. Your house provided us with a great home base for a week of hiking, bike riding and exploring. I don't know why it took us so long to get to Bar Harbor. It is surely one of our favorite vacation spots now. I also have to say that all of your family pictures around the house make us feel like we know you well. Regretably, although we took numerous picutes here, none is in print form for us to include. I'll send you one - promise. Anyway, thanks again for the opportunity to stay in your home. We would love to come back. Regards, A, B, C, and L "G"

(from our guestbook the week of October 3-10, 2004) Dear Dawsons, The common loons and rednecked grebes calling in the a.m. were a special treat for us and the sunrise view in the a.m. had me out there shooting (pictures) every morning at 6:00! The house is so comfortable and well planned. I enjoyed exploring this area of the island more, because we have previously been in the Seal Harbor area. Your home is delightful. The "R" family p.s. The ocean view from the house is terrific. We all loved the way you have decorated this house. We'll definitely be back next year. (We were happy to welcome them back in 2001!)

(From our guestbook in August 1999.) Thank you Dawsons! We've been in Maine for 2 1/2 years and this has been our first trip to MDI! C (3 years) and C (1 year) really enjoyed having their own comfy rooms and lots of space to play. We've had a total blast! Your house is warm, cozy and comfortable - we appreciate your trusting us with your "things" and for providing us with the day-to-day essentials. If you find any "Barnyard Bingo" pieces, pacifiers, sippy cups, dollie shoes or little socks, we're the culprits! Thank you! Enjoy your wonderful spot!

(From our guestbook in August 2000.) Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us for the week. Although we did not have the benefit of good weather - only 2 days without pouring rain - we had a wonderful stay on the Island. This is our 6th summer coming here and our accommodations were 5* this time! We loved watching the seals from your deck and watching the sailboats glide by. What a view! The girls loved shopping in town and Jordan Pond for popovers. My husband took them on the hike up to the top of Cadillac Mtn - uphill for 2 miles. They slept like rocks! Thank you again - we loved it! Here is our quote: "There is pleasure in the pathless woods/There is a rapture on the lovely shore/By the deep sea, and music in its roar:/I love not man the less, but Nature more." (Lord Byron) P.S. Here is some sea glass for your collection! (They inquired about returning in 2002, but the dates didn't work out. We would have been happy to welcome them back!)

(From our guestbook in June 2000.) We really enjoyed our stay here. Bar Harbor is beautiful. We really wished you had more TV channels. But in a way, I guess it's for the best as we were forced to leave the house and explore the area:) Fortunately, we did get to see Jerry Springer every day, although Kathie Lee Gifford did get annoying after a while. We chipped golfballs out back, so you may find some around when you return, as we're not very good. Or at least my brother is not very good. We had lobster four out of seven nights and my brother got a pregnant one every single time! We hiked a fair amount as well, and my brother and I discovered we like rock climbing. All in all, we had a great time. We got perfect weather virtually every day, and your mastery of interior design truly enhanced our visit. We had pictures of ourselves we were going to leave you, but we can't seem to locate them. Therefore, you will have to use your imagination. (P.S. found the pictures! Here we are!)Thanks from N (older brother and author of letter), J (younger brother and lousy golfer), S (mother and financier!), and K (girlfriend of N and pretty lady!)

We couldn't have asked for better weather. Thank you for the lovely bottle of wine, notecards, and the book on John Gilley. Truly inspirational. We find it difficult each year to leave your wonderful house. Perhaps, we'll try to rent your house for two weeks next year. Thanks again for providing a very lovely and comfortable home for us to use for the week. We can't wait until next year. (From our guestbook in September 2000.) Wow! What a great summer home! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. We had a wonderful time. Our children, M (4) and C (2), tossed rocks in the ocean for hours. We enjoyed several meals in your glassed-in room. What a view! Thank you so much for your recommendations of restaurants. Mrs. Dawson, also thank you, thank you, thank you for helping us locate two wonderful babysitters. Two date nights were perfect! Time has really flown by this week. We have to keep moving to keep the kids interested. Between rock throwing, bike riding on the trails, and taking a lobster sight-seeing boat they had a great time. Thanks again for everything.

From our guestbook for week of June 19-26,2004 To the Dawsons, We rediscovered Bar Harbor! It's so convenient to town and all activities. The fabulous view included daily rounds of lobstermen. The "Pie Lady" and her husband continue to put out great pies and and breads for entertaining. Dinner at "Michelle's" met all expectations of a special evening in town. We probably should have been more mindful of hiking than eating but we weren't. Your kitchen is the most complete we've found in a rental and our two "live-in" cooks found their task quite enjoyable. We enjoyed the wonders and beauty of the park, the galleries in Northeast Harbor, Blue Hill, Deer Isle and Stonington -- a bounty of visual pleasures. Thank you for providing such an inviting home for the week. We hope to come back again.

from our Guestbook - October 4-11, 2003) Dear Dawsons, Just like the beautiful weather this week, your house and its picturesque location exceeded our highest expectations! It was wonderful being right on the water, watching the boats chug up and down and the moon rise over the water. The pace was a welcome change from living in downtown Boston (where they have been on sabbatical this year). We'd love to make it an annual retreat if only it wasn't 27 hours from Sydney (Australia) or 20 hours from Tokyo (where we will be next year) or 31 from Coolah (also Australia). Thank you and best wishes. The E Family (mom, dad, daughters - 2 1/2 and 8 months, and granddad (from Australia).

(from our Guestbook - June 14-21, 2003) Our stay in your home was incredible! This week was the first annual "G" family reunion, and we can't think of a more special place to start the tradition than your home. The beautiful views and peace and quiet made it easy to relax and unwind. We felt "at home" in your lovely house, which is difficult to do on vacation. The large number of beautifully furnished rooms allowed us to spread out, and provided a wonderful place to relax after a busy day sightseeing. Our two-year old loved playing with the fish pillows and never tired of roaming throughout the first floor rooms. When we return to this part of the country, we hope to again be able to make your home our vacation retreat!

(From our guestbook in August 2002.) This was a glorious week. The weather, the setting, your beautiful home, your exquisite taste and attention to every detail of harmony and comfort all combined to make our family week together an experience that we won't ever forget. We celebrated my 51st birthday and our 20th anniversary here at Ledgewood, and I can't imagine a better place to do it. My favorite color is blue, and my favorite combination is blue & white - as you might guess, this home was a feast for the eyes! Everywhere I looked, the serene beauty inside echoed the blue of the bay under white, white clouds and the effect was splendid. Everything was lovely - I do hope we did everything correctly according to the manual. We tried to keep everything as you would wish. Thank you for all the lovliness. We'll cherish the memories. Our quote is: "Look with the heart. That which is essential is invisible to the eye." (Antoine de St. Exupery from the Little Prince.)

(From our guestbook in August 2002.) We have done hiking, biking, and kayaking. What everyone has enjoyed the most is the wonderful family time planning picnics, reading and putting the Oregon Coast puzzle together. Your home gives everyone a great sense of peace. A cross stitch that my husband's mom gave to him states: "Dear Lord be good to me for the sea is so wide and my boat is so small." Thank you for a very memorable vacation.

(From our guestbook in August 2002.) What a fabulous home and setting. The care and attention you've devoted to your home provided a most relaxing week for us. We'll always remember this as the place that our four-month began sleeping through the night! All our best.
