Castle of Aggeliana
One of the Best/Unique Houses in Crete! Where Luxury Holidays meet History…
A Venetian building that has absorbed in the passing of centuries, additions and modifications from the Turks and the Cretans. Traces of its stormy history are quite a few. The memories are settled. The respect, tradition and passion imposed in it’s five year restoration, brought a monument into life:
“The Castle of Aggeliana”.
The building (550 sq.m.) carries in its soul a history of centuries. However, it offers all the modern comforts. In the stone built yard, next to the wooden oven, the swimming pool offers the visitor the relaxation and balance that he is looking for in his vacation.
The interior decoration comprised of antiques, creates a harmony with the traditional olive oil press mill and the cellar of local Liatikou Cretan wine, next to the French dining room from the past century.
The living room, with its impressive sharp tips, double arches, impressive sculptured fireplace, stands between the French pool table and the piano. Enjoy a tranquil evening watching movies on the overhead projector. The fine lined stone stairs, after crossing the fountain and the stone well lead you to the four bedrooms that are named after the local names of the region: Archondissa, Melissokeri, Myrte and Brisida.
Archondissa with its nine windows, wooden cypress floors, the unique decoration and the stone built fireplace, give an essence and a unique character at the same time. Melissokeri, Myrte and Brisida with the feeling of freshness and color, private fire places and bathrooms, create an unforgettable rejuvenation.
Architect’s Testiment for the Archaeological Department
The building is located within the traditional village Aggeliana automatically protected as a monument under the provisions of Article 6 of Law 3028/2002 on the protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage.
This is a very large complex of 18th century Ottoman times with very clear influences and architectural elements that characterize the Venetian period in Crete. The complex has four main building phases developed in gamma(?) shape around a courtyard, which is closed from east by a tall fortfied wall where the main access to the building is located, a large arched doorway.
The southern part of the building is developed on two floors constructed as rubble and plastered. Architectural elements of the form of carved stone corners, the plain rectangular windows and smaller window vents in the upper part.
The eastern section of the ground floor is formed by an arched opening and two small windows and with special morphological features such as the excellent technical and aesthetic chimney resting on small cantilevers which leads to the roof and the ground floor rooms interconnected by pointed arches. Access to the upper floor takes place from the courtyard via a stone staircase built on arches.
The western part of the complex is an elongated floor building in the North-South axis with very high pointed arches forming the old mill, whose mill equipment has been preserved and exposed in the building and consists of:
A) an olive mill with three millstones typical characteristic of the early 19th century. B) the metal press and c) the big semicircular stone trough. The building itself is clearly older than the mill equipment as shown by pointed arches that form the interior and the simple openings of the east side with cornices with successive concave-convex figures of the 18th century. The complex has been restored and returned to its original form with great care, with respect for history and its particular architecture. It constitutes a reference point for the region as a historical monument as well as excellent example of restoration.

We were a group of friends meeting in Crete from around Europe and the US and stayed at the Castle of Aggeliana for 3 weeks. The rooms were spacious, very clean, each with a living area, fireplace and bathroom. The castle itself is amazing, as well as the garden area and pool on which we spent some beautiful nights under the stars with bbq, music and drinks (I hope we didn’t disturb our neighbors!). We will never forget yiayia Maria, whom we met in the village, for bringing us fresh eggs and milk each day. Thank you yiayia Maria! The location was superb; we were 5 min from the beach and were able to visit both Heraklion, Rethymnon and Chania areas through daily trips. Staff at the castle were fantastic, even helping with great advice for places to visit. The free Wi-Fi worked just fine and we were able to get much work done as well. We will certainly be back! Amazing castle, amazing location, amazing Rethymnon, amazing Crete!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with young children, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, pet owners, adventure seekers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I, along with 3 more couples, stayed at the castle for two weeks in August of 2012 and we had a wonderful time! It was the first time the castle operated after its construction so we were the first guests who actually stayed there. The castle was more than expected from the pictures, the finest villa we have stayed in Crete and we have stayed in many different places as we visit year after year both the Chania and Rethymnon prefectures. The house is full of antique details and a very unusual decor! Our host went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. The staff was very helpful as well and our rooms and house were very very clean. The village is very lively, with many places to eat and kafenia (traditional coffee shops) where everyone welcomed us and treated us to raki (the traditional alchoholic drink of Crete). We felt as Kings and Queens and were very sorry to leave but promised we will return for relaxation and pleasure!! Totally recommended!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with young children, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, pet owners, adventure seekers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Mandlene, I am very happy you had a wonderful stay and I hope to see you again this year! My best wishes to Pascal, Sebastian, Monica and the rest of your happy group. Happy New Year! My love to all of you! Despoina
