Map & Owner's Profile
Lake Front Cottage Facing Acadia National Park
Year Purchased: 1982
Why the Owner Chose Seal Cove
I was attracted to this property, formerly a hunting and fishing camp, because the ad boasted abundant wildlife. When I first saw Hodgdon Pond Farm, I realized proximity to Acadia National Park gave it enduring protection and privacy, and yet it was convenient to everything else on the island.
The Unique Benefits at this House
I love resting in the hammock beside the lake, and listening to the sounds of the birds and animals - the trill of tree frogs, keening of loons, and the querulous calls of osprey that always sound as if they are trying to get children off to school. Sometimes I hear a beaver slap the water with its tail, and sometimes ravens loudly scolding an eagle. The bullfrogs, Kingfisher, and warblers add to this ever changing, ever fascinating serenade. I also love sitting in one of the Adirondack chairs near the Little Ponds. The last time I was there I watched a mother duck and four very small duckings paddling to the bridge with the beaver dam. When they got very close a mink lunged out from under the bridge - but missed them all. Another time I was weeding the garden between the ponds when an otter stood up about ten feet from me, clutching a frog in its paws, which it then crunched as it rested in the culvert. These experiences carry me through a long winter!

I'm a summer kid who fell in love with Mount Desert Island and lived there year-round for 15 years. After many years and many travels, I still think of it as home.

We have spent a week each September for the past three years watching the leaves change and enjoying warm evening fires and cool morning hikes at this lovely, two-story cottage. The layout is perfect for our young family (two adults and a four-year-old child). The pond is perfect for little paddling excursions, and the proximity to amazing day hikes and shorter walks is perfect. Having a dishwasher, washer/dryer and enough room to make big floor puzzles on a rainy day is so terrific. We will return again and again.
Owner response:Thank you so much! We love having kids enjoy Hodgdon Pond Farm, and are delighted you will be back.

HPF is a lovely spot in which to spend a vacation on Mt. Desert. A wonderfully quiet and private location, away from the at-times busy and touristy moments. HPF offers a wonderful space in which to spread out, enjoy the park, and enjoy your time away. It offers a superb deal when compared with hotel rooms in Bar Harbor, and offers more of a naturalist's retreat. The amenities and owner's care are top- notch and we have loved coming here for years. We love that we can cook family dinners and avoid having to eat every meal out. Proximity to so many amazing spots within the Park is also a great asset. Our children love the kayaks, canoes and swingset, and we love the quiet and space.
Owner response:Thank you for submitting a wonderful review. I'm really glad you enjoyed yourselves at Hodgdon Pond Farm, and it makes me very happy to know you appreciate what we've done to make the cottage comfortable. Thanks too for pointing out that renting a three-bedroom two-bath cottage with a kitchen is less expensive than staying in a hotel. Please come back soon!

My wife and I, older and retired, spent a week at HPF with younger friends with a 10 year old daughter. It was mid-August and the weather pattern worked in our favor. Not to hot, never to cool, what one calls "perfect" vacation weather. What we particularly liked about HPF was the isolation that directly translated into quiet and peacefulness, resulting in multiple sightings of four legged mammals and birds, the highlight being the bald eagle slowly circling overhead one day just above the cottage. Having coffee in the morning as the sun broke over the hill across from the pond, seeing the pond stir as the morning breezes kicked in, well, it does not get any better. Enjoying the pond is another special treat. Going to the dock and enjoying the frogs, which our 10 year old did every morning and evening, using the canoe and kayaks, swimming off the raft in the cool not cold water, fishing, and it was all right there. What a treat. While the owner had informed us of the low water it did not impact us at all. The cottage is spacious, and with two bathrooms and a washer/dryer you can't beat the convenience. I guess the only problem we had is that a week is only 7 days. Such is life.
Owner response:I'm so glad you had such a good time and saw an eagle. I was equally pleased to learn from other renters who hired a birding guide that he thinks Hodgdon Pond is a terrific place to see birds and sometimes brings people to the Park side of the lake. Your comment about 4-legged mammals reminds me that a pair of beaver set up camp this fall at our Little Ponds, which makes it quite easy to see them and their work. What the beaver don't know is that we put a "beaver deceiver" in the larger of the two ponds a few years ago, and it seems to work well. Thanks for the nice comment and I hope you come back soon!

We have been coming to Mt Desert Island and specifically HPF for the past 11 years. We have stayed in each of the two cottages several times and each has its own unique charm. The wonderful views, the privacy, direct access to wonderful swimming and kayaking, and proximity to Acadia National Park, make HPF a wonderful choice for families with children or adults looking for a quiet time away. The cottages are very well equipped and we look forward every year to seeing what improvements the owner has made. She truly cares about her quest's enjoyment and each year she calls upon arrival to be sure all is well. A very nice touch. Highly recommended!

If you like peace and quiet and privacy, then this is the place for you. Since you can't see the other cabin from yours, you seem to "own" the pond. Our only regret was the low level of the pond in front of our cottage September 2011, but a drought is something no one can change. The owner sets a very high standard for using "green" products which is commendable.
Owner response:I'm so glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet of Hodgdon Pond Farm, though obviously I regret that the water level was low, in fact the lowest I have seen in over 30 years. You're right, there's nothing I can do about a drought, but I will extend and or move the dock and float next spring. I treasure the tranquility of Hodgdon Pond, as do the birds and animals that live there. It's always a pleasure to have people stay with us who appreciate that, as well as our continuing efforts to be "green." Thanks very much!

We stayed here and found it to be a great place. The property is right on the lake and the loons in the morning were fantastic. The descriptions are very accurate and the pictures representative. The rental process was extremely easy because of the professional attitude the owner takes. She also provided a lot of extra help regarding the area (the book of brochures we found in the cottage was a nice touch that first night when the family wanted to plan our trip around the area). This place is about 30 minutes from the center of the national park (the map makes this clear) but the drive was pretty easy to get to the areas we wanted to visit. The distance also made it very quiet and relaxing. (I was pleasantly surprised that there is quite a bit of the "national park stuff" in the immediate area.)

Rob and I first found out about HPF through friends who invited us to stay one night while we were camping at Seawall Campground, which is part of Acadia National Park. It was a rainy day and when we had the comfort of a roof and warm shower, our camping days were dwindling. The following year the same friends found they couldn't take the cabin. We asked if we could take their place and we haven't missed a year. Our children weren't born yet, but a year or two later (Matt now 22) was born and we'd put him in a backpack carrier and hike throughout the park. Four years later Kelsey was born (now 18) and she took her first canoe ride at 4 months. Matt became an expert frog catcher at the little pond and played on the jungle gym provided. As the years quickly passed, the kids became expert swimmers and would swim to the middle of the pond top the floating dock. Having kayaks provided hours of entertainments as they took nets to catch turtles, frogs, etc. and bring them back fro Rob to photograph and eventually create numerous paintings from these excursions. We have our favorite haunts throughout Mt. Desert and have enjoyed many a lobster on the island, some of which we cooked in the cabin or enjoyed at Thurston's. To be honest we have lost track of how many years we have been at Hodgdon Pond Farm, but all we know is that we have created a lifetime of memories.

Things we like best. Wow...where to begin? The cottages are absolutely private, on a lovely pond which is perfect for swimming and playing about in the canoes and kayaks. The accommodations are immaculate, up-to-date, bright and pretty. Most important, Hodgdon Pond is situated within access of Acadia National Park and the myriad wonderful things to do in and around that and we could have easily kept ourselves and the children busy for two weeks, instead of the one we reserved. We would recommend staying at Hodgdon Pond Farm because of the lovely accomodations, well-maintained; restful, peaceful setting; many, many wonderful things to do in the area.
