Rented the house for a guys weekend and it could not have been more ideal. First of all, I've rented several houses on VRBO and Ted was by far the most proactive and accommodating owner I've encountered. Quickly answered all questions in weeks leading up the trip, and called to check on us the night of check-in. Speaking to the issue someone had with accessing the house: we had 2 people come up in sedans (a Volvo and a Corolla) without issue. Just take the switchbacks slow and you'll be fine. The place was very easy to find (even in the dark) and the owner will give you very thorough directions. The house is really interestingly designed and well-decorated as you can see from the photos. The spacious kitchen and living room give way to short hallways on either side with bedrooms/bathrooms, and the master suites are accessed via stairs on either side of the living room. And situated underneath is a sprawling game room with leather couches, a TV, one of the better pool tables you'll find in a rental, and another bedroom and full bath. Kitchen is well-stocked with cookware, dinnerware, silverware, kitchen tools, you name it. The view from the porch is incredible. We were there in January, so the lack of leaves probably helped, but we could see across to the cascading mountain faces some miles away, and the way the sunlight hit them in the evening was stunning. Also: you can appreciate that view whilst soaking in a hot tub. It doesn't get much better than that. The drive to town for supplies is roughly 15 minutes, which is short enough that it's convenient but that you still feel adequately isolated up in your cabin. There are also some decent trails in the area, we drove about 30 minutes to a hike that rewarded us with a spectacular view of the countryside. There is a neighboring house across the way, but Archar's Lair is situated far enough away and such that the porches, jacuzzi and fire pit area are mostly out of view of the neighboring home, so you don't ever feel like you're in eachother's business. All in all, couldn't have dreamed up better spot. Great for a guys' weekend, but would also be ideal for a big family, a couples retreat, etc. Can't wait to get back some time. Thanks Ted!

The place was as advertised, spacious and lovely. Everything worked well and plenty of space to relax including the hot tub. The only thing that kept me from giving it a five star was the task given to guest to take the garbage to a transfer station two miles out. A simple task that could be given to the cleaning crew versus your guest especially if you are leaving with a car full of people and luggage. Otherwise the place was outstanding!!!

Group of 7 adults loved the view from this home and found it the perfect central location for our day trips to Asheville,(to see Biltmore), the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest (to see old growth forest), lots of local waterfalls, Bryson City (for train ride and ziplining), and tubing on river just below the mountain. Franklin was close enough that we could get anything we needed or even a drink and a meal out. Most of our evening meals we made and enjoyed in the large kitchen, and dining room that are open to the living room with views of the mountain that appeared out to the fog late most mornings. Comfy beds for all. (It's almost impossible to find a house with four king size beds!) We had two empty rooms that could have slept another four to six people. Would definitely recommend to a large family or group of friends. It's perfect for spending time together in the spacious common areas. Lots of wildlife in the area (especially wild turkeys!) and lots of places to hike close by or a short drive away. Longest day trip was almost an hour and a half and all the drives were through beautiful country! Hope to make it back sometime soon!

Fifteen of us from 84 years to 9 months gathered for a family weekend, which was a much too short of a time to enjoy this beautiful retreat. We lucked out with perfect weather though not quite fall color yet. We found accommodations true to advertised via descriptions and photos and spic and span clean. Some enjoyed the hot tub with the mountain backdrop and some enjoyed the fire pit to knock off evenings' chill, not to mention perfect for marshmallow roasting. The house was well-appointed with satelite TV, pool table, etc., even a few toys for the baby (plus cribs, high chair and walker plus a handicap ramp). Comfortable beds and furniture, great porch chairs, and a well-stocked kitchen with paper products, coffee, creamer, sugar, etc. The owner was quick to respond when I booked, helpful, and even phoned after we checked in to see if there were any questions. Since our time was so short, we didn't venture out but enjoyed our surroundings, although on Sunday, we stopped for gem mining at Gold City for the kids and a family style lunch at Jarrett House - a meal no one should miss if you are in the area and have the opportunity. No complaints and would stay here again, definitely. Just be prepared for a steep entry road but one person in our party had a Honda Civic and came in after dark with no problems. Just pay attention to the owner provided directions, which are very good. A lovely place in an even more beautiful setting. Thanks for sharing!

We had a group of 15 with 2 dogs and we all had a wonderful stay. With some family and some friends there was plenty of privacy in this huge, beautiful log cabin. The porch was a hit as well as the large kitchen table where many late night card and board games were played. The downstairs game room was fun for everyone. We had no trouble with the air hockey, there were plenty of Fooseballs and the pool table was nice. The downstairs has a full bath and has a 7th bedroom if you have an air mattress. There were lots of games and toys. We cooked every meal and did quite well in the kitchen feeding 15-lots of dishes, silverware etc.The entire place was very clean and cool(great AC!) The dogs had lots of freedom on the porch and large enough yard to explore. The views were spectacular and changing during the day.We also enjoyed how beautifully it was decorated. From my 85 year old mother to my18 year old nephew, we had a blast. The road was an adventure, but to be expected in the mountains!

We loved staying at Archar's Landing! We enjoyed spending most of our time on the front porch and taking in the beautiful views. We spent one afternoon white water rafting down the Nantahala River (30-45 minute drive away). The house is also very pet friendly!

While this is without a doubt a truly beautiful log home, and the description was for the most part correct, there are 6 bedrooms, (7 if you bring an air mattress for the basement room off to the side of the gameroom) there are most of the amenities listed. However, there is no "private 5 acres" you have another rental cabin about 50 yards away, clear sightline to the master bedroom on that side, and several others up and down the road to the cabin. And in full range of the neighbors very loud very late parties. And their extremely loud diesel trucks running up and down the nearly impassable road to the cabin. This road is not for the faint of heart, my suburban slipped and slid up and down this road, and it made us very nervous about even leaving the cabin to do anything, because we had to face that incredibly steep gravel road with two hairpin turns that required backing up and repositioning to make on the side of the steep mountain. There were several 4 wheel drive vehicles that made it daily going to the construction site above you, they arrived (noisily) about 7 every morning. The wifi did not work, no matter how many times we unplugged and replugged the router, and of course weren't told that it was very limited and extra charges for using it until after the check was sent. The new pool table in the basement was nice, would have been nicer if there were cues to play with. All of the cues were warped and had no tips on them. We bought replacement tips at walmart and tried supergluing them on, but it didn't work. No air to the air hocky table, and we never did find balls for the fooseball table. This was a lovely house, no doubt about it. But the "rest of the story" made it a choice I would NOT have made had I known. For the price paid for the week, I feel very "taken" considering. No one mentioned the fact that the power goes out fairly regularly (at least it did this week) The owner was very nice, and when he returned my calls spoke very pleasantly to me, of course, not much he could do about anything being so far away. Also get no cell signal up there, but of course that isn't his fault. If all you want to do is go to the mountain and watch tv, this is the house for you. (as long as the power and satellite stay on). The cleaning crew could stand to spend a little more time clearing cobwebs from that spectacular railing also, as well as doing something about the wasp nests in the ceiling peaks. Not a good trip.

Owner response: I am sorry for the inconvenience if your stay at the cabin wasn't enjoyable. I wish you would have called me about the problems that occurred. The only thing we discussed on the phone was the power outage which I had no control over. My friend, who lives 1/4 mile away maintains the cabin for me and can deal with the problems quickly. I keep extra pool cues, foosballs in the locked storage room which my friend has access. The air hockey table works: the labels may have come off the table showing location of the switches. Most of your issues would have been resolved with a phone call to me.

We were a family group of 11. The house is beautiful and was well maintained, very clean and was very much exactly what the pictures had shown. Ted was available for any questions and was very nice to us. The only problem we found was the roads to the house. Going up is tough, coming down a lot easier. I would recommend that more and better pots with lids be added. It was a great house and we enjoyed it. The gas logs were a definite hit! sandra

The beds were very comfortable and the rooms, spacious. Plenty of floor space to add in a few airbeds so kids could sleep in same room. Unlike most vacation homes, Archer's Lair has a well-equipped kitchen. We brought along a collapsible 8-ft table and folding chairs for additional dining. The kids enjoyed eating out on the huge deck. Lots of places for hanging eno hammocks (a fave of our teens). We appreciated the clean hot tub, great firepit (complete with wood provided) and well-outfitted gameroom. We hope to make this our annual getaway spot!

Owner response: I'm glad you had a great time at the. Ted

We all loved the house. It was a wonderful weekend with our children and grandchildren. The satellite was out from an earlier storm, but that didn't matter, we played games, ate great food and just enjoyed our time, together. The house has a hot tub, game room and plenty of space for everyone to sleep. Would definitely stay here, again.

About the owner: We first came to Franklin four years ago and fell in love with the area. When this cabin came for sale we jumped at the chance to buy it. We live and work in central Florida but drive up to the Archar Lair as much as possible and hope to move here as soon as possible.
