My husband and I have rented in the area many times. We like to start vacation with extended family so the area is ideal as a meeting place for Long Island and Boston. We recently added a dog to the family. Now I needed to find a new home that allows a dog and can accommodate a large group. Lucky for me, after many months of searching I found what I call the Truslow treasure. We were able to meet 2 of the 3 brothers and wives when we came to check out the house and then to stay. Most of my dealings were with Jon but Sharon, David and Liz were all great, warm and helpful. We were here with the family of 14 ages 12-86 Easter 2013. There were plenty of comfortable beds for everyone to sleep in. We chose the "high" bed as it was great for reading and out the window you could see the stars and moon at night and watch the sun rise over the mountain in the morning. The dining room table was roomy enough for our non stop feasting. The large kitchen was a favorite gathering place with a wood stove , incredible views and a huge pantry that every woman should have. The living room by the fire was another favorite place especially for napping or using the game table and a wall of assorted games to play. You can feel the history of the home as much of the furnishings and gadgets were from days gone by ~ the pictures through out the house reminded you of everyone's grandparents. There was wifi so everyone remained connected and everything "i" worked perfectly. We had Verizon service. Easter Sunday when the family left we had the home to ourselves and totally enjoyed the peace, quiet and country setting - you didn't have to lock the doors ~ imagine that!! Sitting in the kitchen in the morning with a fire in the wood stove and a cup of coffee admiring the view was all I had thought it would be. We enjoyed hiking the grounds seeing deer and turkeys daily. Take a drive to close by Hoogs & Crawford in Canaan. You can watch the glass blowing process and admire or purchase the gorgeous pieces displayed. If you are looking for the perfect gathering place with a sense of family and friends this is the place. Being in this 1800's home with my family was priceless to me. We all agreed it was one of the best times we have had since we started this type of vacationing. I always try to be the best tenant when we rent but this time I went above and beyond what was required so I could be sure we could come back next Easter right Jon? You will enjoy your stay here.

Presidents' Weekend Getaway
Presidents' Weekend Getaway
My friends and I had a wonderful long weekend getaway at John's Canaan house. We were a total of 4 families (8 adults plus 7 kids between us). The house accommodated us perfectly. We were concerned at first because of the limited bathrooms, but it turned out to be a non-issue (everyone in our group was accommodating and because we were on a holiday schedule, we each got up at different times anyway, so there was never a wait to use the bathroom). The house has a lot of character and the pictures and the description are very accurate. John was also helpful in sending additional pictures and info. The house has been in John's family since the 1800's and there are a lot of old family pictures lining the walls. You could sense the history the house holds. The communal rooms in the house were great, especially the kitchen which was large and bright and had a great wood burning stove/heater. The kitchen was well stocked and had enough space for multiple people to prepare and cook meals. And it was very nice to have a large table in the kitchen for the kids to eat at and a separate large table in the adjacent dining room for the adults. The living room had a large fireplace and we enjoyed playing boardgames here after dinner (the shelves are lined with boardgames and movies; enough to keep the kids and adults occupied). We had ambitious plans of skiing and hiking, but we ended up spending most of our time at the house. The house has large grounds for sledding, tossing a football around, and letting the kids run around. We did make one day trip to a nearby ski place with beginner slopes (15 to 20 minutes from the house), and also one trip to a place known for its cider donuts (only 10 minutes away). John sent us a list of nearby activities, restaurants, and attractions. Very helpful. All in all, a fun and relaxing retreat. Reasonably priced and a comfortable stay. John made the process very easy and called on us afterwards to make sure we were satisfied.

About the owner: My brothers and I now own the farmhouse that has been our family gathering place for generations before us. We would come to the farm every summer from our home in Connecticut. While no longer an operating dairy farm, the house, lawns, fields, and barns that were our great summer escape are still there for us. We love it and think you will too.
Why the Owner Chose Canaan:
If you are looking for a house with lots of space to gather friends and family, lawns for them to be outdoors, and easy access to interesting places in the Berkshires, you can't find a better vacation spot.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
The view from our kitchen table is mesmerizing.
