Falmouth Harbour house description
Cliffhanger Cottage was designed, built and loved by Peter Fernandez, the voice of Speed Racer in the original anime TV show. Situated in a National Park, the cottage is perched on a mountain high above the Caribbean Sea. There is a constant breeze and the views are stunning. To the east is Falmouth Harbor, to the south an exotic hillside garden and the open sea, to the west, the headlands and the island of Montserrat with its occasional volcanic activity. To the north, mountains tumble to the sea. All this is visible from the three sided deck. Visitors tell us that we have “the best view in the Caribbean.”
The house is on two levels. The top level has a well-equipped kitchen, living room with marble floors, large deck and master bedroom with a double four poster bed. Off the master bedroom is a bathroom and large shower open to the sea.
The lower level is very private with its own deck and a bedroom with twin beds together, comprising a king sized bed. This room has the option of air conditioning or doors open to the sea, garden and deck. Across the deck is a large bathroom with shower and more views to the sea. On a third level is an additional shady deck built especially for Yoga.
We designed our eco-friendly cottage to function off the grid. It runs on solar power and rain water from a cistern, leaving no carbon footprint. The house has cell phone signal but no internet access. Off the grid, you will be truly able to relax into the rhythms of the sea, the breeze, and the tropical birds. Should you need email or internet, free Wi-Fi is a ten-minute drive away at the Sea Breeze Cafe, next to the Antigua Yacht Club.
Cliffhanger is perfect for hikers. Guides can be arranged through our friend Dassa of Footsteps Hiking. A 45 minute walk to the beautiful Rendezvous Beach begins in the garden. Another path goes down steps to private rock pools. Occasionally Humpback whales can be sighted just offshore from the deck. At certain times of the year Leatherback turtles lay their eggs on the deserted beaches nearby. Frigate birds and brown pelicans soar past at eye level.
A short distance away is the Spring Hill Caribbean Equestrian Center where horseback rides can be arranged to Rendezvous Beach. Ten minutes away, the villages of Falmouth and English Harbour offer all amenities plus dive shops. A short distance over the hill is the beautiful Pigeon Beach. Sailing can be arranged at the Antigua Yacht Club, even lessons for beginners.
Many simply unwind, unable to leave the deck and its views. The sound of the sea is always in your ear, joined by tree frogs at night. In addition to the daytime views and the magnificent sunset, the night sky with all the constellations reveals itself with perfect clarity, unmarred by light pollution from other houses.
If however, you get the urge to leave the deck for a bit of night life, Falmouth and and English Harbour offer every kind of restaurant from gourmet to local cooking. After dinner, dance the night away to excellent reggae bands.
In the garden you may find two friendly feline lodgers named Tom and Jasper. They may be a bit shy at first.
Here are some excerpts from our guestbook:
“Another wedding on your deck—seems to be the house of happiness.”
“We liked it so much we got married on your deck. We are still talking about your fantastic house in the sky.”
March posting by Antigua's environmental group.
'Yes, it’s that time of year again and there are whales aplenty being sighted on a daily basis in our waters.'
During April's Classic Regatta and Sailing Week, racing yachts tack right below the house.

This is a lovely property, with incredible views of both sunsets and sunrises. My husband and I love the beauty of the Caribbean, and this place really shows it off. It was great to relax and adjust to the simple pleasures. Although there's no wi-fi at the house, we enjoyed a morning coffee at the Sea Breeze Cafe, which was very pleasant. I only wish we'd been able to try their homemade gelato. Katherine, the caretaker at Cliffhanger, was most helpful. Our one piece of advise is to get a good map of the island, though the street signs are few and far between, if you want to venture away from this beautiful property. On the other hand, we enjoyed cooking at Cliffhanger, and having dinner on the deck. And waking up to a beautiful orange sunrise was amazing!!

Restful and Romantic
Restful and Romantic
What a beautiful place this is. We could not believe it. We arrived in the middle of a hard New England winter and ready for a deep rest. We rested and relaxed and watched the boats and the water for hours from all the various decks. The sunsets were spectacular. Mosquito netting so romantic. We loved the shower room overlooking the ocean. Everything was just as it is pictured, and Katherine is such a wonderful host. She knows everything and pointed us to just the right places to explore. Highly recommended.

Absolutely the vest views!
Absolutely the vest views!
We were fortunate enough to holiday here earlier this month and had the MOST relaxing island vacation. Katherine was so very helpful and pleasant in every question we had regarding our time there. The home was perfect, complete with the two cats. There were wonderful deck areas for every time of the day, whether you wanted sun or not. The home is well equipped with everything needed, and the kitchen even has many staples and spices. Watching the sailboats and yachts comes into the harbor was fun. There is a wonderful 45 minute hiking path right from the back yard to a deserted beach that you must not miss. Truly, the home and Katherine are a treasure!

So relaxing you won't want to leave
So relaxing you won't want to leave
My husband and I stayed at this wonderful place this past December. The house brought on such a state of total relaxation that we had to get motivated to leave. The house is charming, sparsely and elegantly decorated, a comfortable blend of luxury and simplicity. We really like the flow of the house; it is small-ish but feels spacious and the energy flows nicely. We basically lived outdoors on the decks, moving from hammock to yoga deck to sun chairs to outdoor dining table. The place is high enough on the mountain that the views are amazing—you can see the plumes of smoke from the Montserrat volcano and once we saw the lights of Guadeloupe. The house is close enough to the sea that you hear the waves breaking, as well as lots of birds, and tree frogs at night. Bring your binoculars (or use the owners’) because there are always boats or birds to watch from the deck. The night sky was spectacular—we saw shooting stars several times. We ended up lying on the sun chairs late into the evening just watching the sky. We arrived to find some basic cooking supplies, and we recommend making a big grocery run on the way from the airport. We were happy cooking most of our meals and tried some of the local vegetables at nearby Bailey's Market—the local avocado, spinach and arugula were delicious. We explored Nelson's Dockyard, the Slipway with internet cafe and the Yacht Club restaurant. We almost signed up for sailing lessons there but were too lazy. Our favorite memory is hiking from the house to Rendez-Vous Beach first thing in the morning and being the only ones on the whole beach. It is a picture-perfect beach. The sand is classic soft and the surf is perfect for having fun but not working too hard against the waves. In the interests of full disclosure, we know the owner, who invited us to stay as a trial run before renting it out this time. She designed the house and really loves it, and it shows in lots of little details. Tips we would give: renting a car is a must and a 4x4 is recommended; the road is a bit bumpy and steep (well, it is on a Caribbean mountain.) You buy your own drinking water in gallons. Katherine, the manager, lives right nearby and is wonderful and has lots of good suggestions for restaurants and things to do. When my husband needed some minor medical care for his eye, Katherine directed us right to a very good specialist and even offered to drive us. Highly recommended for hikers, lovers of sailing, beaches, views.

Year Purchased: 1988
About: My late husband Peter Fernandez and I designed this house in 1988 in the classic Caribbean style, and had it built by the locally-renowned Scottish architect, Eric Smith. This has been our secluded family get-away as our children grew up. We come down from New York for total relaxation, to get away from the harsh winters and the fast pace of the entertainment business.
Why Falmouth Harbour:
Visitors tell us this house has 'the best view in the Caribbean.' the hammock on the front deck is a classic. To the east you can see Shirley heights and all the sailing yachts in English harbor, while to the west is the untouched rendezvous beach. Straight ahead is the island of Montserrat with its volcanic activity clearly visible from our decks. The house itself is comfortable, elegant, and perfectly nestled into the mountain.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This home is truly off the grid, away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Besides the views, the sound-scape of the breaking waves, the tropical birds, and the tree frogs, create a natural rhythm that is unforgettable. It is perfect for those who want a writer's retreat
