we chose this relatively isolated property in beautiful hawi in as our base for exploring north kohala and were very pleased. the variety of trees that richard has planted is astounding and make for such a wonderful immersion into a lush tropical sanctuary that was very rejuvenating for us. our 5 year old daughter will never forget the time she spent there running through the trees exploring and feeding a little lamb milk every morning and evening. our hosts were very pleasant and made us feel at home and the studio was comfortable and perfect for us. it was only 5 minutes to charming downtown hawi and 30 mins to our favorite beach. we were glad to be away from the hustle and bustle of the resort areas.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

We just returned from a magical 12 days staying at the Lokahi Studio. It is a wonderful spot amid a gorgeous 10 acre permaculture garden, full of exotic plants and trees. The hosts, Richard and Natalie, could not have been more welcoming. They made us feel like friends immediately, and shared a wealth of experience and knowledge with us to guarantee an excellent stay. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable (great bed!), and had everything we needed to be comfortable, cook at home with the delicious eggs and greens from the gardens on the property, and enjoy our stay on the island. Hawi is a wonderful taste of old Hawaii, full of old plantations, orchards and wild lush tropical valleys. It is off the beaten path for most tourists to the Big Island, and I recommend it to anyone not into the big tourist resort experience who is looking for a more low key and less commercial way to explore and enjoy Hawaii.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

About the owner: Dr. Richard Liebmann, ND began his journey to health and wellness in his early 20’s living in Israel. He returned to the United States to attend the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Richard graduated with high honors in 1977 and for the next two years worked at the college teaching and in the administration. In 1979 Richard moved to the big island of Hawaii and opened the Hawaii Family Health Clinic. After his work in the clinic Richard began integrating his experience practicing Naturopathic Medicine into expanded arenas. For over 25 years Richard and his wife Natalie have been leading groups in health and adventure based experiences in Hawaii, Italy and Patagonia. In 1996 Richard became the first executive director of United Plant Savers, a non profit organization dedicated to medicinal plant conservation. For the past 10 years Richard has been focused on creating Lokahi Garden Sanctuary. With the help of his two children he built the sanctuary center, designed the gardens and landscaped 10 acres with over 250 different species of plants and trees. For Richard, Lokahi Garden Sanctuary is the culmination of over 35 years experience in guiding people on their journey to health and wellness. Dr. Liebmann honors this process and recognizes that each person’s journey is unique. He is grateful for the opportunity to share on a deep level with others.
