Sandpiper Cottage... Your Island Home Away from Home

Year Purchased: 2001

Why the Owner Chose Gulf Beaches

Growing up on the Georgia coast a beach town was not a place with resorts and high rise condos. It was a place where you could hop on your bike and not worry about being mowed over by traffic. We spent many years exploring coastal towns from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and even California. Our current home is in the Metro Atlanta area, we were looking for a quiet place to get away. The late Celestine Sibley, a long time writer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, on occasion would write of her travels to her 2nd home on Dog Island Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Her writings intrigued us and that is how we found The Forgotten Coast. Finally a place to getaway, to leave your worries behind, and at one time, a place where our cell phones could not get a signal.
How great was that!

The Unique Benefits at this House

Sandpiper Cottage is on a corner lot, it is positioned across from a beach right of way that cannot be built upon.
You walk out the door, down the walkway, cross the street and you are on the dune walkover. There is not a home to our right, left, or behind Sandpiper. The island bike path conveniently crosses the rear of our property-it is great for walking pets, early morning runs, and of course sight seeing on your bike. If you don't bring your bike, you can always rent one while on the island.
If you get a chance, during your visit, check out the sunsets on the west end of the island, on the bay side.

A
Apalachicola

A pretty town, spend a day- check out the beautiful old homes, the working waterfront, great little shops, and try a different restaurant everyday. You won't be disappointed.

Owner's Map of Gulf Beaches

Sandpiper Cottage was built in the early 1970s by 2 brothers to share with their growing families.
The door frame to the laundry room has the names, dates, and heights of all of their children. When we purchased Sandpiper our children's info was also added, along with a few of our 4-legged family members. Their family continues to travel to St. George Island and we are honored that they still stay in Sandpiper when they visit.
Our family purchased Sandpiper Cottage in 2001, we have had fun making Sandpiper Cottage our own.
The pool and landscape was the first large project we tackled.
When we purchased the cottage, I could not wait for the day I could change the outside color from
that "crazy pink" to a more subdued color. However, that day came in 2008 and we just could not make ourselves change the color, in fact, we chose a color called Caribbean Coral-we always tell folks to look for the pink house with a green roof on East 5th!
We consider Sandpiper Cottage a true Florida cottage, and unfortunately there are few of these
homes left. But don't let the age fool you, all of the systems have been replaced, along with
new ductwork, flooring, furniture(inside & out), and of course paint.

We had another wonderful stay at Sandpiper Cottage on SGI, 3 weeks is so relaxing. it was fun climbing up inside the lighthouse, great views. Both of our dogs love it here! Our older one(13 yrs) probably won't be down again, but he made the most of his time here. The weather was wonderful and we had very little rain. We meet so many interesting people (& dogs) at the beach some aren't far from where we live. Looking forward t another great time next year, Marty & Jan McFarland Alex and Skylar

Thank you for all for a wonderful week stayat your wonderful Sandpiper Cottage. This was our 2nd stay at Sandpiper and we so enjoyed our stay. We really enjoyed the outside shower addition this time. We were lucky to have Sunny, hot weather the entrie week. We did have 1 strong storm one evening and it was sort of exciting. We enjoyed a visit up the Lighthouse, fishing on the bay, the state park, the Orman House and the Veterans Exhibit in downtown Apalachicola and Eastpoint. We had nice meals at The Blue Parrot, BJs, The Hut, Boss Oyster, and El Jalisco. We purchased fantastic meats at the Island Market place, Loved the Smoked Tuna dip and awesome steaks and Boars Head meats and cheeses. We adore peaceful St George Island and the surronding areas. We are so very thankful to spend this week here making lasting family memories. thank you for sharing your beautiful home with our family a second time. We are looking forward to our next visit. See you next year. God Bless, Corey, Rebecca, Ben, & Bailey

We had a great time in the pool and the beach. Loved chasing crabs at night on the beach. Our 3 year old, Daytona, loved playing in the sand. It worked out perfect for all my grand kids with the beach so close and a pool to get away from the sand. Thanks so much, Brenda and Family

Thank you for sharing your home. We came knowing we had 3 nights of storms ahead but rain at the island always beats rain at home! Friday was beautiful and we were able to enjoy the pool. Our 6 year old is a water bug. The yard is beautiful and about to be in full bloom. We were comfortable here and it does feel like home away from home. As a token of our thanks the little sandpiper on the desk is here to greet future guests. Thanks again for the hospitality, Mark, Michelle, Nicholas and Molly & Daisy
