Uptown-Carrollton house description
One of the most unique properties in New Orleans. You will not find another house like this one. The house is located on the shore of the Mississippi River. There are only a handful of these. It is a very private sanctuary. This is not a vacation home; this is the private residence of a very unique New Orleans family. The husband is in the publishing business and the wife is the director of music festivals in New Orleans. This home has hosted some of the best parties in New Orleans.
The house is on pilings and is a 3,000 sq ft camelback. The house is completely custom made. The woodwork in the house is incredible. The floors are hardwood Brazilian Walnut. All of the doors and windows are cypress (made on site) the stairway in teak. There are four decks. Two of them are 12’x28’ overlooking the Mississippi River. The house has three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. The bedrooms are located on the first floor along with the library/bedroom. There is a master with an en suite bathroom. Which contains a large antique claw foot tub, a walk in shower with a large sunflower shower head and a separate sprayer.
This is large enough to accommodate two people. There is also a double sink on a custom made mahogany vanity. The floor is antique Cuban tile and is equipped with radiant floor heating. There are two other guest bedrooms, one with a queen size bed (this bedroom also has an entrance unto the 8’x26’ front porch deck) and the other with a double bed. They share a bathroom with a large antique claw foot tub and separate shower, with radiant floor heating, along with a double sink. The house boasts a beautiful custom made mahogany library with two thousand volumes and over two thousand record albums. There is also a built in single bed in the library, the library opens up onto the first of two 12’x28’ decks overlooking the majestic Mississippi River.
The kitchen, living/dining room is located on the second floor to take advantage of the incredible Mississippi River view. The teak stairway leads to a landing with two wonderful 1850’s stained glass windows totaling over 9’ in height. The second floor had four sets of French doors that open onto the second 12’x28’ covered teak deck. There are also eight large double windows, four on each side of the room; all of this glass provides great natural light. The kitchen is separated from the living/dining room by a one of a kind 18’x4’ beautiful piece of mahogany. A crosscut of a tree made into the bar with a range top inset and surrounded by 13 bar stools and an oven located underneath. The antique dining room table is set to seat 8 currently, but leaves and chairs can be added to seat 12. In the living room there is a sofa and several comfortable armchairs. There is also a 46’ flat screen television with cable and DVD/VHS capabilities. The ceiling angles upward in the center of the room reaching a height of 17’ where solid beam truss work in held together by custom steel plates. The teak deck has wonderful a seating area with two rocking chairs, a wicker loveseat and three papasan chairs, along with a table. The half bath upstairs has antique tile on the floor, a carrera marble vanity, a toilet and a urinal. It also has a porthole window from a WWII warship and has antique wainscoting trimmed with mahogany.
The house is hidden on the river side of the levee and has parking for at least 10 cars. Directly in front of the house, on top of the levee is a bicycle trail. We have three adult bicycles available for use. We are 1 block away from Oak Street, which is a great neighborhood shopping district, with over 80 businesses. It has many restaurants including Jacques-Imo’s, Tru Burger, Oak Street Café, Ninja Japanese Restaurant and Cowbell Restaurant. There is also live music at the Maple Leaf Bar, several coffee shops, a bakery, a bookstore and lots more. There is a streetcar stop at the end of Oak Street which can take you through uptown New Orleans, passing Audubon Park, Tulane and Loyola University’s, through the museum district and Central Business Districts and to the French Quarter, with a stop within walking distance of the Superdome.
