All that Serene Lakes has to offer in a cozy, cute, recently-remodeled cabin.
If you don't know Serene Lakes and Donner Summit, you should. Just 2.5 hours from San Francisco, this beautiful setting gets more snow (39 feet on average) than it's nearby Lake Tahoe brethren. And because it is just on the west side of the pass, you avoid the worst of the road conditions and traffic both coming and going ... spend more time vacationing and less time on the road.
The Sugar Shack cabin is quaint and complete, on a relatively-private, well-treed corner lot on a quiet street. A block's walk will get you to the lake, and two blocks delivers you to the extensive trail system of the Royal Gorge X-country ski area (also good for summer hiking/biking). Sugar Bowl ski resort is an easy four mile drive down the road. (PLEASE NOTE: We do not offer ski leases at the Sugar Shack.)
On the first floor of the Sugar Shack, a wood stove warms a living room with vaulted ceilings. Living space opens to newly-remodeled kitchen/dining area with a large table. A sliding glass door accesses the sunny back deck. Two identical queen bedrooms and a full bath complete the first floor.
Up the stairs is a large sleeping loft and TV/game area with two twin beds and two fold out sofa chairs. The loft has a bathroom with stall shower (3/4 bath).
The house is accessed through an A-frame vestibule perfect for storing skis, boots, and firewood. The vestibule also makes for easy access to the cabin on those legendary Serene Lakes snow days (a snowplow service will clear right up to the front door the morning of every snowfall, and repeatedly throughout the day if necessary).
In summer, swimming at the beach is a must. Or bring along your canoe, kayak or SUP (stand up paddle board) and enjoy a paddle around the lake.
The Sugar Shack can sleep up to a tight 8, but 6 is more comfortable. The floor plan is a good set-up for a single family desiring space, three couples, or two families with a couple of kids each.
The small Serene Lakes community is very welcoming. If you want to make friends and learn more about the area, simply say hello to your neighbors as you see them during a stroll around the lake. The Serene Lakes Property Owners Association is also very active, having recently raised $3 million towards the $13.5 million purchase of the surrounding 3,000 acre Royal Gorge parcel, permanently preserving this gem of an open space for future generations (and for you).
We (the owners) have 'VRBO'd' all across the country as a family, and with the Sugar Shack, we have tried to create an offering with the features we value in a vacation rental. The Sugar Shack is truly set up for visitors (i.e. you won't find our pictures and stuff strewn about the place). We strive to manage the Sugar Shack in a professional manner, and the property is professionally cleaned between guests. We retain a local property manager for emergencies.

Cabin is on corner lot with lots of trees (private). Walk one block to lake and canoe put-in, less than a mile around lake to beach for swimming. Two blocks to Royal Gorge X-country ski trails. Popular sledding hill one block away.

About the owner: We have always wanted a 'cabin in the woods,' and part of making it happen has been to design/remodel a place that not only we could enjoy, but one that could be a wonderful retreat for other families too. As a family with two small kids, we've rented many a vacation cabin in California, and we've designed the Sugar Shack with the best of those experiences in mind.
Why the Owner Chose Soda Springs: A cozy and cute cabin on a relatively private lot, in a very friendly and nature/adventure focused community, one block from the lake, with skiing a couple minutes away? Why not?
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin: Many of the homes at Serene Lakes are either huge (5 bedroom, sleep 12), or if they are smaller, they are quite old. We fully remodeled this cabin in 2013 with an all new kitchen, refinished wood floors, new washer/dryer, new bathrooms, new furniture, new sheets, new light and plumbing fixtures, etc.
