- The house is located in Canaan de Rivas on the Chirripó River at the base of the Chirripó Mountain and National Park. Canaan is a picturesque mountain village made up of a small population of local coffee and dairy farmers and ex pats from worldwide. Tourism is thriving in the area as it provides one of few entrances into the National Park and access to the summit of the Chirripó Mountain, which is the highest peak in Costa Rica at 3800 meters (12,500ft). Canaan itself is situated at an altitude of 1200 metres (4000ft) which provides an ideal climate for growing most vegetables and supplies the perfect environment for an abundance of mountain flora and native trees, that in turn atracts a colourful array of birds and wildlife. Amongst the many things to do and experience in the area are the botanical gardens, hot springs, swiss cheese farm, organic chocolate factory, Cloudridge Reserve and Waterfalls, horseback riding, paraglyding, hiking, birdwatching, fishing and of course relaxing by the river or at the spa. Just a 30 minute drive from the property is the main town of San Isidro del General with a much larger population of close to 50,000, with a developed infrastructure that hosts a hospital, emergency clinic and other medical services. It has many shops and restaurants and on Thursdays holds a very popular farmers market. Another 30 minutes out of San Isidro is the small beach town of Dominical, located on the Pacific side of the country, where you may have access to boat and fishing tours as well as surfing. Canaan itself is a very quiet village and the enclosed property is extremely tranquil with the soothing sound of the river running below. It is the perfect environment for a relaxing vacation or a holistic retreat. ...moreless

Costa Rica adventure
Costa Rica adventure
What an amazing experience! My wife and I just made an adventurous trip to Costa Rica. The experiences the country and the accommodations went far beyond our expectations. This was topped off by a host and caretaker that met our every need. If you are considering a vacation rental by owner we highly recommend Angus and his Retreat. This home is fabulous. We picked fruit in the yard, relaxed in the garden and took pictures by the amazing river. The constant roar of the rapids and waterfalls was so soothing. All this was our backyard. We travelled to other highly acclaimed sites only to discover they did not impress beyond our own Retreat. The house and the hosts are amazing but the location is also ideal. We were close to the ocean and yet in the mountains and the rain forest. All this while being close to the city and it's amenities. Again, we highly recommend Chirroposa Retreat and the memories it will give you without reservation. We will be back!

Breathtakingly Beautiful & Relaxing
Breathtakingly Beautiful & Relaxing
We could not be happier with our choice to stay at Chirripó Mountain Retreat. Angus and Tania have made it a wonderful home -- comfortably, but simply, furnished with all the basics, as well as some custom upscale touches for extra "awe factor." It is obvious the care and pride they have for the house and the land. Upon arrival, Angus had printed information about the house and local contacts, and included several pages of "interesting things to do" along with a very clear hand-drawn map for the area. This information was very helpful -- we used it daily as we explored the valley. We took advantage of the fresh vegetables, herbs and oranges from the gardens almost everyday, and made it down to the swimming hole several afternoons to cool off. There were many beautiful birds, moths and butterflies literally "a few meters" off the deck. And we were fortunate enough to see a group of spider monkeys in the canopy straight across the river. We met several neighbors in the nearby villages or down at the river, and everyone had very high regard for Angus and Tania. Chirripó Mountain Retreat definitely is on our list of favorite places, and we have no doubt that we will return soon. Thank you, Angus and Tania!

Awesome, awesome, awesome home! Owner and caretaker were very attentive and the hummingbirds posed for pictures every morning. Lots of great things to do & see in the area and fun 4 wheeling to get to all of it! Homemade cheeses and chocolate available a few houses up the road and an beautiful yoga retreat a little further up the road. The river is beautiful as is the entire property loaded with fruit trees and beautiful flowers. Nature Magazine is going to have trouble deciding which of my photos to use as their next cover! Watch out for the peppers growing in the garden though...they will ignite even the biggest hot pepper fan! Just got home yesterday and already can't wait to return!!

Fall in love with this place…
Fall in love with this place…
...like I did. The house is beautifully constructed, comfortable and cozy. During my 10 days stay I especially enjoyed the thoughtfully designed kitchen and the spacious balcony overlooking the garden, the river and the jungle. Located close to the road, but very peaceful, apart for the sounds of the surrounding garden and the virgin rainforest just across the Chirripó river. You have private access to the riverbank, where you can relax on the beautiful big rocks. We went swimming in the natural “swimming pool”, since the stream was not to strong. Fish were jumping high up the little waterfalls, and the air tastes like paradise. In the evening it cools down for a good night’s sleep. All round, it´s the most relaxing spot if you are into nature. Good infrastructure, even if most guests seem to have a car, you could make without. There is a regular bus to San Isidro, a little pulperia just 5 Minutes walk from the house and a farm where local cheese is made, which is a nice change from the cheese you get in the supermarket. A slightly longer walk to the “Hard Rock Café" restaurant, that features freshly caught trout on the menu. The “Aguas Thermales” are beautiful and relaxing and approximately a 30 minute walk from the house. Yoga classes are often held nearby at the 'Rio Chirripó' Retreat. Don´t miss the good food on the way to San Isidro: Antojos de Maiz, 50mts. Sur de la entrada a Miravelles, La Bonita de Rivas, camino al Chirripó.

Great CR vacation
Great CR vacation
Our family has been in Costa Rica many times, this was our first time at Chirripo Mountains. The mountain is unbelievably beautiful and the weather very pleasant. The Chirripo mountain retreat is in a great location with a spectacular river and mountain view. The house is very comfortable, the glass and wood construction provides great natural lighting. We highly recommend and hope to be back soon.

Chirripo Mountain Retreat
Hi Angus thank you very much for letting me stay in your house. It gave me the gift of hearing the river sing! It was a real treat and I will be back for sure. I actually stayed one more night and now on the beach, flying back tomorrow. What an awesome trip.

3 days of pure bliss in the Costa Rica mountains...
3 days of pure bliss in the Costa Rica mountains...
The house is an absolute stunner. A beautiful property tucked away from a road in the Chirripo mountains. If you're looking for some time to relax and recharge this is the place to do so. The house is spotless clean and has everything you'd wish for. An amazing terrace overseeing the river and the mountains on the other side, a state of the art kitchen (the owner is a chef), a really nice bathroom and the most comfortable bed ever... The garden is huge and has a stocked greenhouse as well as orange trees. You can climb down the river and relax on the hot stones or go for a quick dip in the refreshing stream. The constant sound of the river will calm you down and before you no it you'll be in a state of bliss. My girlfriend and I stayed only a few days there and really regret that we couldn't extend our trip. And a few words about the owners: Angus and Tanja (Tangus) are the most wonderful hosts you can imagine. Unbelievably helpful and friendly. They will show you around, introduce you to their friends and neighbors and give you useful tips. Both of them know the area (and the rest of Costa Rica) extremely well. You may decide to just hang at the house and enjoy life but in case you want to explore the surrounding area the two of them will tell you how to go about it or even come along with you. You can tell they have great love for this magical place - it shows in every interaction with them. Go spend some time at their place in the mountains and you will return with lasting memories.

The house is Canaan was great; it may have been the best part of our trip to Costa Rica! Forget the beach, if you want some real relaxation, venture off the beaten path and spend some time in a hammock by a roaring river, which is just steps from the house. We had total seclusion if we wanted it, and Angus and Tania were great guides and company when we wanted to see the sights. If you want to stay in an awesome house, with the best "sound machine" imaginable, avoid tourists, and get away from it all, I highly recommend this place!

Owner response: Thanks Thor I hope you and Megan are well. We hope to see you both again very soon. All the best Angus, Tania and Smooki
Angus is extremely generous, attentive to details and has an over-all energy that exudes humility! Although he was traveling he offered us immediate responses to our questions and his welcome note was very thoughtful. "Kubla Khan"-in one word is- impresionante! A home away from home-prime location-super comfy beds, both balconies over look your own, private river-do a bit of yoga or enjoy some local, organic coffee, as the day kicks in...the layout of la casa is very unique-cook, listen to music, BBQ, watch birds and butterflies (fireflies at night) a bit of futbol, or simply embrace the roaring Rio Chirripo. The garden is plentiful-flora and fauna galore-fresh oranges, not to mention the shower is extraordinary (gracias Tania for the sweet garden view and lovely flower arrangement) Local digs: catch your own trout at La Truchera (Amable and Gonzalez are awesome), Tao's Samaritin Chocolate, Las Aguas Thermales and the local Queso mujer, Catya. Angus and Tania-this place is a true gem, thank you for sharing, and we look forward to crossing paths again...suerte!

About the owner: I am the owner and head chef of a yoga and wellness retreat in Costa Rica (www.chirriposa-retreats.com). I love to spend time at the beach surfing, but find that a balance between the beach lifestyle and climate and that of the mountains and river is what makes me love this country so much. I like to spend time inbetween groups at my home relaxing, working on the property and growing fruits and vegetables. The river has a tremendous energy and cleansing properties...and has even offered up the occasional trout or two! I highly recommend diving into the ice cold swimming hole below the property and then lying out on the gigantic black hot rocks to warm through. I designed and built my house myself and take great pride in keeping it well maintained. I enjoy a few home comforts, when I am not working down in the jungle without electricity, so I may spend the odd afternoon watching some Premiership Football on the television from the hammock. Freshly squeezed orange juice is a must in the morning from the abundant trees all over the property. Then bake some bread and head down to the river to see if I can catch some lunch. Pick some organic salads and herbs from the garden on the way up to the house. Put the kettle on...a nice cup of tea...and I'm set! Its the simple things in life that count...I know what I like...and I like what I know!
Why the Owner Chose San Isidro del General:
As soon as I walked onto this property, I knew it was the one! As a teenager, I had studied English Literature at school and was fascinated by a poem that I read called 'Kubla Khan - a vision in a dream', written by Samuel Coleridge. Whilst under the influence of opium, Coleridge wrote the poem about a magical garden with waterfalls and a river running through it and beautiful plants and forests surrounded by a wall with towers. I always kept this magical image in my mind and hoped that one day I would find this garden. Where better place to find it than in Canaán?!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The property offers access to all the local attractions and is only a 30 minute drive from the town and 1 hr to the beach, yet is very private and secluded. In fact, you may not even want to leave the property once you arrive...just drive down the drive, close the gates and enjoy the privacy of your own mountain retreat.
