As a long time VRBO owner of a vacation rental my standards are pretty high and I feel that our stay provided everything one could dream of for a upscale getaway. We booked over the Thanksgiving holiday and I was able to cook a wonderful meal for our family as if I were in my own kitchen. The beds were comfortable and the house very well appointed and clean. The location is perfect to shopping and dining and a short drive from some great hiking areas. The backyard pool is very nice and private with a serene waterfall. The owners of the main house were there for a few of the days we were there. They were very informative about things to consider doing and we even got invited to enjoy an evening cocktail hour where Larry who is a famous mixologist in Chicago. He made us some great speciality drinks and we enjoyed some great conversation with Larry and Jim. Other than that we really never engaged much and felt we had the place to ourself. If you are looking for a private upscale neighborhood and backyard pool setting then this is a great choice!

Owner response: Really enjoyed having Thelma and her family at the Guest House over the Thanksgiving holiday. Thelma and her family enjoyed all that the Desert has to offer: early morning coffee at Koffi in Rancho Mirage, hiking in the mountains, shopping on El Paseo, relaxing by the pool, feeding the Koi, dinner at a wide selection of quality restaurants and even BBQ,s at the Guest House. We hosted a cocktail party for Thelma and her family one night and another night they had our neighbors over for a very quality evening of fun conversation. We hope they return as they were delightful guests in every way.

Our stay at the Desert Sun Guest House was exactly what we needed! The location is excellent and the property is beautiful and very comfortable. The exceptional private courtyard provided a perfect place to relax. Jim & Larry go out of their way to make sure everything is looked after and are wonderful hosts. We highly recommend this property.

Owner response: We are happy to hear that Elaine and Phil enjoyed their stay. Both are quality individuals and were the perfect guests. We were there for one day of their stay and hosted a small cocktail party where we ended up talking for hours in the rear courtyard. We really hope they return and visit us again.
Great home with a relaxing back yard
Great home with a relaxing back yard
We stayed in February this past year. We met the owners when we arrived and they showed us around. They left 2 days later . The home was wonderfully decorated and equipped for my month long stay. The home is centrally located only 5 minutes from the River and El Paseo. The home itself had a wonderful kitchen with everything we needed to cook and entertain. It was very clean and maintained. The back yard is a paradise with its Koi Pond and waterfall. We had coffee every morning under the Gazebo it was nice and relaxing. I would definitely recommend this home for a nice relaxing stay in the desert.

Owner response: We very much enjoyed having Marcie and her guests stay at Desert Sun. We joined Marcie and her visiting friend Peggy for dinner at Spencer's and had a wonderful evening with them. Marcie enjoys entertaining and we were delighted to hear that she fully utilized the kitchen and rear courtyard to host a cocktail party in the rear courtyard that included our neighbors and several of her visiting friends. Marcie is a perfect guest and we look forward to her staying many times in the future.
Unsatisfactory stay in this duplex.
Unsatisfactory stay in this duplex.
Did not like security web cam allowing owner to view the “private” pool and hot tub area in his absence. We were invaded by pests and bugs and could not use the second bedroom because of it. The kitchen, although lovely, was very poorly only partially appointed with cheap, some broken or not working. Upon arrival we had no access to the property. The owner failed to email arrival instructions (although he thought he had) and we had no access after having driven for days and was rude when we pressed for access. Advertised as an estate, this is actually a duplex with no private entrance as it uses the same front door as the other side. Courtyard windows look into the other side facing. There is virtually no feeling of private space anywhere in the unit. I have rented through VRBO for many years and this was the first really unsatisfactory experience and also the first feedback I have ever left. It is intended that you, as a potential renter, may make a more informed decision before renting.

Owner response: A great effort is made to assure that Guests of Desert Sun Estate have a relaxing, enjoyable stay. This Guest stayed one month, Spring 13. Desert Sun Estate is a gated Estate. Like most Desert properties, we have two outside security cameras, one at front motorcourt the other the rear courtyard. The security cameras are for Guest security as owners are only at the property 2-3 days every 4-6 weeks. Desert Sun Estate Guest House has never had a pest problem. Our rental agreement, ask Guests to not leave doors open for extended periods as insects will enter. We are confused by the Guest statement he was unable to use the second bedroom. When the Guest House was cleaned, the bedroom had been used and there was no evidence of insects anywhere in the house. Desert Sun Estate Guest House and Casita was built in 2008 and specifically permitted as a family estate by the City of Rancho Mirage. We only recently (February 2013) opened the Guest House as a vacation rental. All furnishings, bedding, mattresses, kitchen utensils were purchased new in February 2013. The kitchen is fully stocked with utensils purchased from Macys, Williams Sonoma. Arrival instructions are sent to all Guests. In the case of this Guest we received communication from the Guest he would be arriving by car in the afternoon. In the evening we received an email from the Guest stating he would arrive later that night. I emailed back, advising we would be going to dinner but would be there to greet them at the time he indicated he was to arrive. We returned to the property at the time indicated. Cant say why the Guest did not utilize the arrival instructions. Guest House Guest can enter the Guest House through a private entry directly from their attached garage or through the front foyer door (see pictures on VRBO). We took every step possible to assure our Guest have a relaxing environment, in which they feel like they can “get away from it all” The two bedrooms have drapes curtains for complete privacy The Courtyard windows of the Guests House (referred to in this review) are on a hallway going out to the rear courtyard (pool) . The French doors face French Doors also on a hallway of the main house. The windows referred to in the review are not in a living space for either the Guest House or main house (the main house is only occupied 2-3 days every 4-6 weeks. Desert Sun Estate was designed to be a serene relaxing oasis. Our Guest comfort is our upmost concern.

This is an excellent choice in the Palm Springs area. The rental is well located close to all major attractions. It is well furnished, has an excellent kitchen, and is very comfortable is all respects. The owners are most cooperative and did several things to make our stay more enjoyable. The casita is attractive and provides privacy. The central patio area with swimming pool is refreshing on a hot day and great for relaxing. This rental is one we plan to return to in the future.

Owner response: Jack and Nancy and Jacks brother and his wife are all quality people and we enjoyed having them as guests and look forward to their 2014 stay. Jack and his brother participated in the Indian Wells Seniors tennis open and won first place. We had a nice little cocktail hour with them and our neighbors across the street and discovered Nancy is quite a cook. Larry made the cocktails and we all had a very enjoyable evening out on the rear courtyard
