This place was BEAUTIFUL! My boyfriend and I stayed here for a full week and had the best vacation experience we've had yet. I was so excited to drive up to this little cottage -- it was the perfect distance away from Kapaa so we felt like we were away from the hustle and bustle and other tourists, but close enough to make quick trips to town. I felt like a local! The cottage itself is clean, well-maintained, and beautifully decorated. Deani was wonderfully accommodating and very nice; she answered all of our touristy questions and was very helpful. She had fresh orchids in the cottage and her daughters even baked up a macadamia and walnut tart that I had to fight my boyfriend over so I could get a slice!! They were so cute. The cottage is located on the Higashi's property, but it's on the side of their spacious yard so you don't feel as if they're on top of you or anything. Very private. All the amenities listed in the ad were true -- we were super comfortable in the bed, and it was nice to come home and watch a movie and cook a little dinner for ourselves after a long day on the beach. I recommend a rental car so you can see everything the island has to offer. We crammed so much into our week that I can barely list it all: we did the art walk at Hanapepe (every Friday, super cute little town!), we hiked the Sleeping Giant (SO close to the cottage, I wanted to hike it every morning!), did a snorkel cruise to the Na Pali Coast (wonderful and totally worth the $, but remember to wear tons of sunscreen), snorkeled at Tunnels Beach where I saw 8 sea turtles in one day (awesome!), kayaked down the Wailua River (there's a little place by the bridge where you can rent kayaks, I forgot what it's called), went up to Hanalei for farmer's market on Saturday and got shave ice before jumping off the pier, and went up to Waimea Canyon (I thought it was prettier than the Grand Canyon!). I also had one of the best meals of my life at the nearby Hukilau Lani, it was sooooo good and the ambiance was spectacular. Highly recommended. There's also nearby grocery stores to get food to make meals at the cottage -- good way to save money. There was so much to do and see and our cottage was so relaxing and comfortable, I never wanted to leave. I highly recommend renting this place, and my boyfriend and I will definitely be back again to stay here! It's time to start saving for another vacay!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Year Purchased: 1988
About the owner: Deani and Todd Higashi have been residents of the Wailua Homesteads for nearly 30 years. Both locals of this gorgeous island, they have chosen to raise their five children and two grandchildren nestled amongst the lush greenery of Kauai. Todd, a longtime surfing instructor, spends his days teaching young and old alike to learn to surf the beautiful waters, and Deani works overlooking and maintaining gorgeous properties around the Garden Island. Both love spending time with their beautiful 'ohana!
Why the Owner Chose Wailua:
Upon seeing the Wailua Homesteads, Tood and Deani fell instantly in love and knew this was the place to raise their family together. Away from the hustle and bustle of Kapa'a and other nearby towns, this upcountry farmland estate provided a safe, quiet place for their multiple children and grandchildren to play safely and enjoy true island living. The seperate cottage was built in 1990 as a longterm rental on the edge of the property and remodeled just last year, and Deani and Todd decided to turn it into a vacation rental in order to provide more opportunity for others to experience beautiful Kauai!
