Property description

Sorry, but we're full for 2015! Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, “West Camp” has been in the same family for nearly a century. A secluded cove, 1,000 feet of shoreline and a large lawn on Squam Lake create a wonderful vacation spot for families and couples to unwind.

While there is plenty to do around Squam (see below), the camp provides ample space for relaxing. Guests have exclusive use of a raft, two kayaks, and canoe. There are steps with a railing down to a shallow, sandy-bottom area - there’s a small beach when the lake level is low. A private dock accommodates two boats up to 16’ and provides a great fishing spot for children.

There’s seating on the lawn, a hammock, large wrap-around porch and deck, two stone fireplace indoor living areas, three bedrooms and an eat-in kitchen.

“West Camp” is for folks who are looking for a traditional lake retreat in a spectacular, quiet location. The kitchen has been updated. We don’t have TVs (there’s internet) but have lots of puzzles and board games. With the lake outside your front door, there’s plenty to do.

Our guests also have access to Yard Island. Yard is a privately-owned, uninhabited island on the south side of the lake. It's a great destination for a boat ride, picnic or even campout.

Squam Lake is two hours north of Boston. Dubbed the quiet lake, there is far less development and boat traffic than on nearby Winnipesaukee. Bennett Cove is a quiet cove located on the north side of the lake. Folks come to Squam to enjoy the wildlife, lakes and mountains. There are, however, many “civilized” pleasures within a short drive including restaurants, live theatre, music, golf and various attractions.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1920

About the owner: Five generations of our family have enjoyed this summer home on the edge of Squam Lake. For us it's about getting outside and experiencing the beauty of the lake and the White Mountains.

Why the Owner Chose Squam Lake:
With its long driveway and location in the cove, there are few rentals on Squam that offer the privacy at West Camp. While we've updated some things, we strive to keep the traditional ambiance.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our day often starts with coffee on the porch overlooking the lake, a boat ride to town to pick up the newspapers and basic supplies – usually bringing a fishing rod just in case! Depending on the weather, midday might be a hike – there are many 1-3 hour hikes along the Squam Range within a 10 minute drive, a paddle, swim or just hanging out and reading or playing a game. Dinner is either at the camp or one of the many restaurants within a 25 minute drive. Cool nights always end with everyone hanging out either in the sitting or living rooms in front of a fire. * If you like to run, there's an amazing five-mile run from the camp to the top of Rattlesnake - providing the best views of the lake. You can also drive the four minutes to the base parking lot where it's less than a mile hike to the top.
