Property was wonderful, the ocean was right there. And the owner did an amazing job of keeping everything well stocked in the house (ex.pam spray, laundry detergents ect.) lots of room for hosting and close to the ferry! Would defiantly stay again! And bonus, we were greeted with an array of baked goods and chocolates! Thanks again Su!

Owner response: Hello Angie, Thank you so much for your kind words. I am delighted to hear that you and your girlfriends had a wonderful weekend at Departure Bay Beach House. Please do come back and spend time with us again. Cheers, Su G.
We wanted to escape the awful winter in Calgary and have family visit us as well, and we knew from renting Seaview previously that the Departure Bay Beach House was in a fabulous location. I couldn't resist the newly built home, and it truly delivered. The main floor is very well laid out, and flows right out to the Bay. But the main show-stopper was the view from the second floor. The windows give a panoramic view of the ever changing Bay and took our breath away. Family and friends came to stay with us, and they were impressed as well. I put family members to work in the completely outfitted kitchen, and even had my brother-in-law on the BBQ one night. The fireplaces were a big hit with everyone, and the TVs only came on for a couple Olympic hockey games. We were too busy taking in the view and enjoying our surroundings to turn it on otherwise! The whole experience was so well worth it, and the house is so lovely we referred to it many times when we were out as "heading home". I think there can be no higher compliment than to have that feeling - a sense of home while on vacation in a stunning setting.

Owner response: Wow! Michelle, such high praise! We are overwhelmed with your feedback about your stay and the house. We work hard to make the house a home away from home, and are delighted that you felt exactly that while in residence. Thank you so much for your kind words. Hope to see you soon. All best best, Su G.

Departure Bay Beachhouse is an ideal location any time of the year. We have stayed three times now, winter and summer, and loved it. The ever-changing scenes on the bay, the wildlife, the proximity to great grocery stores, the walking, running, cycling and kayaking...this is the Pacific Northwest at its best.

Owner response: Thank you so much for the review Paul. We enjoyed having you and your family as our guests for the Thanksgiving long weekend. All the best, Su Grimmer
Our wonderful experience with Su from Departure Bay Beach House started long before we arrived. Su knew I was planning to travel with 2 seniors (one in a wheelchair) and my daughter. She was so helpful with activity suggestions that the 4 of us could do, even though there were 3 generations to please. Then suddenly, my plans changed 24hrs before arrival and the trip turned into a 2 sisters and 2 daughters trip. Su sent me more wonderful suggestions of things we could do as 4 “Island Girls”. Arrival at the house took our breath away. It is easy to find in Nanaimo and close to all the shopping amenities you may need. The house is exactly as shown on the web site. It’s just beautiful…. and the grounds are beautifully done as well. The cleanliness is spot on and all appliances are in perfect working order. The scenery of the bay is breath-taking; the house is steps from the ocean. Su goes that extra mile to make you comfortable. Aware that my trip was suddenly changed at the last moment and thinking that I might be a tad stressed, she had a bottle of “Stress relief “waiting in the fridge for us, as well as fresh bakery bread. So sweet of her. We had 4 nights, 5 days of fun … using ideas sent in texts from Sue and suggestions from her guest binder on the counter. It was comforting to know that Su is readily available to deal with any issues (which we had none!) She really looks out for her guests! We would not hesitate to return for another visit and would recommend this beach house to anyone!

We were speechless from the moment we opened the front door. This home was exceptionally planned and bulit and makes everyone, children and elderly alike feel at home. The ocean is the backyard and it invites you to start every day of your vacation feeling inspired and happy. The pebble beach opens up to beautiful sand at low tide, and the ocean treasures are a must see experience... From ferries to sea planes, seals, friendly geese and even resident starfish, you are in a private location, but are never really alone. This vacation home allowed our family to have many special gatherings as it is very open, accomodating and comfortable for large groups. Everyone staying at the home had their own bedroom, bathroom, and even access to various decks situated very well on the property. The kitchen and dining area are very welcoming and are really an invitation to coming out to enjoy the beauty of departure bay. We never felt the need to leave for anything better...Absolutely one of our most memorable family vacations. We can't wait to come back again next year... The property owner, Su, went out of her way to welcome, greet and see us off as well. Truly the start of a wonderful friendship... Thanks so much for letting us share your beautiful home...

Owner response: Dear Susan & John, Thank you very much for your wonderful review. It was a pleasure to meet you and your extended family this past summer. I am delighted that you will be back with us again in summer 2014. You have given me one of my best ever memories; that of sending mythical, mysterious, magical round ocean rock "eggs" back to three boys who'd left their treasures behind. I was delighted to be the conveyor of a parcel filled with great memories. I still smile about that. See you all next summer. All the best, Su Grimmer
very happy overall
very happy overall
Our family of 10 stayed here (2 grandparents, 4 parents, 4 kids ages 3-7) for 1 week. The house was very clean, well-laid out, comfortable, had wonderful views, and had lots of space for all of us. We did not feel crowded at all. We enjoyed using the kayak to explore local islands, and the kids enjoyed playing on the pebble beach. We did not have the super low tides as shown in the pictures, so there was little/no sand. We did find a sandy beach at Eagle Point (15 min. drive away), and on Newcastle Island, both were great. We did a lot of cooking and laundry, and all of the appliances worked great. The beds are firm and comfortable. The house is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area of Vancouver Island. Spectacular old growth forest is a 1 hr drive, Parksville/Coombs is 30-40 min drive, and the quaint village of Cowichan Bay (whale watching starting point - we saw a humpback, seals, orcas and a porpoise) is about a 1 hr drive. More locally, we were very happy with the quality of the restaurants and bakeries we tried (within 10-15 min drive), and there are several grocery stores within a quick 5-10 min drive or less. We even sampled fresh oysters from the local fish monger. Even more locally, there is a wonderful kids' water park (Departure Bay Centennial Park) a 5 min walk away, and we trekked (even the 3 y.o!) up Sugarloaf mountain (10 min away) for incredible views of the whole area. If I had to complain about anything...I did find my kids playing in a 'stream' on the beach in front of an adjacent property, which turned out to be run-off from a street culvert - could be clean, could be dirty, who knows. The 2nd thing is that (I might be wrong here), I think there is some sort of water treatment building maybe 500m from the house, and when the wind blows just right, you can smell something not quite right. If you're looking for a house that is a good combination of city perks and proximity Vancouver Island fun, has breathtaking views, and super easy water access, this place is for you. For us, the walk-on pebble beach steps from the kitchen, plus all the amenities included with the house definitely outweighed any of the cons.

Owner response: Hi Michelle & family, Thank you for the wonderful overview of Departure Bay Beach House and the area. I must say you folks really did explore and make use of all this area has to offer! Your tips on some of the great things to see & do within the region is also greatly appreciated and I am sure helpful to those reading your review. The stream that you mention in your review, is, indeed, fresh water. In fact, when the coal ships used to come to Departure Bay eons ago, that stream was where the boats filled up with fresh water. It is not city run off. The stream originates as a fresh water spring a far ways off, and has been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years by the First Nations peoples who originally called Departure Bay home and used the stream as their fresh water supply. Even today, the otters will have their babies in and around that stream so they have a source of fresh water. As to the ocean smell you speak of, there are indeed times when you can catch a whiff of sea critters who have passed to the great beyond (starfish, jelly fish, clams etc. who get caught out at low tide) and yes, sometime that ocean smell can be a tad pungent, but it usually passes with the next high tide. Thank you as well for leaving our house in such pristine condition. We most sincerely appreciate the respect you showed the house & property. All the best, Su Grimmer
Brilliant Beach House
Brilliant Beach House
5 of us stayed in this property for 6 nights and couldn't have been more comfortable. The property is large, well equipped, and spotlessly clean. The views across the bay are stunning and the local wild life made for constant entertainment. The beach house itself is beautiful inside and has been well designed. The owner made sure that the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room are stocked with all the essentials so that we could start your stay without having to dash out for dishwasher tablets. Us five friends from England have traveled all over the world and stayed in many kinds of rented property's and found the Departure Bay Beach House faultless, unfortunately we did have to leave, but if we come back to Canada we will make a bee line for this place.

We'd love to have you back with us again in the future. I hope the rest of your trip in BC was splendid. Cheers, Su Grimmer
Our best family gathering ever!!
Our best family gathering ever!!
When we found the property online we knew right away that it was perfect for our family to gather at and we were not disappointed!!! Actually we loved it from the moment we walked in the front door. The view of Departure Bay was so beautiful and we enjoyed our strolls along the beach at low tide. The home inside was perfect - a beautiful and well stock kitchen, two gathering places - one on the main floor and one upstairs, two balconies, one patio, four beautiful bedrooms - what more could one ask for. We hope to book it again in 2015!

This Get-away was really a GET-AWAY!
This Get-away was really a GET-AWAY!
Our stay at Randall Beach House, Departure Bay Nanaimo, was great. Fabulous house - right on the beach, as the name says – amazing view. So close to the beach you feel like you’re in a houseboat. Big BBQ and deck, but the kitchen rocks as well (so says my wife). The house is huge (we were just 2 so we didn’t even use the upstairs) with a TV in every room, as well as a family room, great for games. If games are not your thing just sit back on the deck, on a log on the beach or in the big comfortable chairs or couches and stare at the sea, seals and sunsets and remember the fishing and crabbing you did that day from the kayak that was in the yard. If you have to do some work, the office upstairs has everything (although I did end up spending lots of time just gazing out the window). So amazing that I didn't really get any work done! My wife loves the place!! Thank you for everything Su, from both of us.

About the owner: This custom built home is owned by our family. It was custom designed and built by one of Nanaimo's most well-respected builders. It sits on the site of one of the original Departure Bay summer cottages built circa 1900. The original wood-frame summer cottage was not salvageable, and so, in 2012, a custom designed house was built on the site. Lots of history. Brand new luxury home.
Why the Owner Chose Nanaimo:
The house site and the whole of the Departure Bay Beach area is one of the most historic in the region. Walk on waterfront is hard to find anywhere in the world, and Departure Bay Beach House is just that...the beach, and the ocean, just outside the ocean side doors of the house.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Waterfront. Oceanfront. Mountain views. Custom build. Modern fully equipped home. Lots of space for family, friends and entertaining. Listen to the crash of waves, stroll the beach, breathe the clean ocean air, de-stress, relax, rejuvenate, re-connect. That's what our family does. For us it is all about big family dinners, good fresh food, lots of laughter, idle hours of reading, listening, talking or just kicking back, sipping a cool drink, taking it all in. Hours slip by and time seems to stand still. Sleep well. Swim. Meditate. Connect. We always leave too soon. We think you will feel the same way.
