Guests can access the pedestrian beach from the County park where there are restrooms and showers, pavilions and beach volley ball courts. Or you can drive on the beach further south on the island (access to the state park is via a beach drive). There is a bait/tackle shop on the island. Grocery stores, drugstores, dollar stores, gas stations, a municipal golf course and restaurants are located about 10 minutes north in the town of Freeport. Further afield (about a 25 minute drive) is the city of Lake Jackson, which boasts a mall, movie theaters, restaurants and more. Allen Place has large, grassy areas for play and a fire pit in the backyard for roasting s'mores or warming up on a cool evening. We loved this house. Such a great affordable option for the Galveston area, and very secluded. The decor and furnishing in the house was perfect for our family of 6 and our in-laws. The house was well stocked with toys and books, along with a TV and DVDs that would have been used if necessary. However, we spent most of our time outside! The beach near the house is a smaller beach with big ships that come near going into Freeport. There is a refinery on the island, behind the house, and although it is almost an eye sore driving to this great rental, it did not affect anything (but I would have to say, that is the ONLY reason we gave it a 4) Quintana is a quiet place to enjoy the waves and sand. With Houston and Galveston so near, there is many things to do. We ended up eating dinner in Galveston twice and only fixed dinner once at the house, which is equipped with all the essentials. All in all, we had a great time, and would definitely consider going to Quintana again :)

What a fun and relaxing weekend we had with friends and family! Love the location - just far enough from the city to feel like a real getaway, and close enough to do in a weekend without stress. The house is absolutely lovely. There are large common spaces and private sleeping rooms - every one of them tastefully decorated and clean. The kitchen is spacious and cooking is easy - there is also a large eating area. A three minute walk to the beach and plenty of opportunities for birding (lots of lovely brown pelicans). Can't wait to return!

If you are looking to get away from it all, this is a great option. The island is small but had alot of exploring to do from the jetty , to the wide open beaches and nature preserves, and even a WW2 era canon to climb up to. It is a great place to kick back, relax and enjoy the beach almost all to yourself. It was close enough for a quick day trip to Surf Side where there are several restaurants and even a small coastal museum that the kids loved. The remodeling and conversion of this historic house was very impressive. Everything was brand new and tastefully done, almost like it was out of a travel magazine. There was plenty of room to spread out with the 3 kids and the kitchen was very clean and well done. It was freezing while we were there and I was surprisingly warm in the house (I am cold in most old homes year round) so they did a great job on fixing it up. We highly recommend this for a vacation any time of year. We look forward to coming back in the spring when we can actually go swim!

We had family coming from out of the country and they really wanted to visit the beach during their stay.We booked the Allen Place because of it's historic charm and due to it's proximity to the beach. When we walked in, we were totally smitten with the house, it has lots of character and the owners have done a great job with the home decor. It felt like we were soaking up history just being there. We had 4 adults and 3 children during our stay and we still felt like there was tons of room in the house. The house was very clean and well maintained. The kitchen is a good size and the professional Chef in our group was happy to use the space. The beds were nice and comfy. The kids were enthralled with the toys provided. We enjoyed walking to the beach and visiting the Neotropical Bird Sanctuary. Quintana was a nice, quiet, peaceful place to visit. We had a really wonderful time and one of the highlights was when my sister's boyfriend proposed to her on the beach! Would love to come back again in the future. Thanks for having us!

We loved everything about this home, the care that the owners took in its long and complete restoration, and their choices in decor!!!! They took such care in making sure our every need was attended to, and in a way that did not leave us walking on eggshells with our 4 and 6 year old boys in the house with us - and another 6 year old boy as well. It's great for a family getaway, even if you never leave the house! Due to the location (and the time of year that we went), I would recommend bringing TONS of insect repellent - the mosquitos were pretty bad, especially on our walks to/from the beach. Other than that, our stay was, in a word, magnificent!

Stayed here with family and friends toward the end of the summer and we loved it! The house is absolutely lovely--it's big and bright, with multiple rooms to hang out--and is in impeccable condition. The house also has a great front porch and big yard for the kids to play in. The location could not be more perfect: its a three minute walk to the beach, where there are great facilities like bathrooms, showers and picnic areas. All in all, a great place that I would recommend for anyone wanting to get away to the beach and relax.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: Originally from the East Coast, and residents of Houston for 7 years, we have been married for 15 years, have four young kids, and try to find time for our endless DIY projects at our two 'vintage' houses - one on Quintana, and one in the Houston Heights. We have 5 years experience as landlords (we rent out our garage apartment in Houston). When we're not running around to various kid activities, we enjoy music, the arts, traveling, reading, attending sporting events and spending time outdoors.

              Why the Owner Chose Quintana:
We must admit we never envisioned ourselves owning a beach house. When asked by our friends and family what led us to Quintana, we don't always know what to say first. Perhaps it was the natural, non-commercial,'local' feel of the place. Or the chance to make family memories away from the hustle and bustle of Houston. Or maybe the fact that we never know what kind of wildlife or birds we'll encounter. It's not every day you share space with Roseate Spoonbills, Scissortail Flycatchers, Great Egrets and Brown Pelicans (Not to mention the strata of amazing wildflowers surrounding us year round). We just couldn't believe a quiet, unspoiled beach like Quintana was only an hour's drive away. And then there was the house. We have a soft spot for old houses in need of renovation. We just couldn't let this piece of history languish in its half-repaired state. Somehow we managed to envision the potential. Those first few weeks and months of renovations were tough - there were many times we questioned what in the world we were thinking. But when we stopped to take a break and listened to the sounds of the waves from the front porch, knowing that generations before us had done the same, we were rejuvenated and given strength to carry on. Where we could, we salvaged materials from the house or refreshed/reused what was already there. We tried to minimize waste where possible and remain true to the original intent/function of the house. The wainscoting in the downstairs bathroom is salvaged exterior siding. The staircase and wood floors are all original to the house. The interior doors and hardware were reclaimed from another old house. We painted the kitchen cabinets rather than replacing them. Almost all of the furnishings (and many appliances) were purchased second-hand, handed down as family antiques or given to us by friends.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Share in a piece of history! Allen Place was built by the Jarvis family in 1883 and is one of only 3 remaining historical structures on the Island of Quintana. A veteran of over six major hurricanes over the last century, Allen Place has served as a boarding house, orphanage, summer home and place of refuge. It is said that numerous residents rode out the deadly hurricane of 1900 in the house. It was initially restored in the 1960's by Benny Allen, a well-known sea captain, and his wife. The house became widely known on the island as 'Allen Place' because of the notoriety of Captain Allen. Allen Place was designated as a historical site in the 1960's. We purchased the house in 2011 after it had suffered damage from hurricane IKE and undergone haphazard repairs. We spent the next year restoring/renovating it with our own blood, sweat and tears and some help from a few contractors. Hopefully you can see the beauty in what we brought back to life. When you stay at Historic Allen place, you are sharing in history, and helping to revive a house that has welcomed guests and weathered storms for over a century.
