Located just outside of West Custer, 1/2 mile off the highway, near French Creek, West Dam, and Rocky Knolls Golf Course.
This beautiful authentic Knotty Pine Cabin was built to last! We have reconverted to the original, nature loving use, that being a 'seasonal rental' for honeymoon's/vacationers/sightseers/nature lovers/hunters. Included, extra sleeper, and cots. Full Kitchen, micro, free coffee and coffee maker, seasonings, toaster, crock pots as well as all indoor and outdoor cooking and eating essentials, garbage bags and soaps. We love rocks and even furnish with good books on Fossils and Rocks. For the patient fishermen, ask and we will supply fishing poles, tackle/tackle box.
Lovely swing seat and plenty of outdoor furnishings, with a patio set/umbrella as well as picnic table, kerosene and tiki lamps, fire pit, charcoal grill and private Hot Tub to enjoy 'under the stars'
Inside is a lovely elect. fireplace for ambiance, as well as just warming up! Included are all your linens and towels, though we do suggest bringing a beach towel for the hot tub, or the conveniently close lakes and beaches, anywhere from 3-10 miles, plenty of lakes to enjoy, as well as the Creek. There is plenty of parking and will accommodate 5th wheel, extra vehicles easily. The location is what many of my guests find so amazing. The cabin is just on the outskirts of Custer, yet set back approx 1/2 mile from the highway. Hwy 16A West and South on Wazi Lane about 1/2 mile, tucked behind a major amount of spruce trees and surrounded by aspen. The amount of travel time as well as fuel and food costs you save make this a good decision for your centralized vacation excursions! The fresh smells of nature at its best, and 'camping' type feeling inspired as you sit amongst the stars outside, with your own fire pit! In the morning, there is nothing like the smell of fresh pine, and fresh coffee as you step outside in your private yard to enjoy the wake up calls of birds and squirrels, a pair of osprey and even eagles circling the creek area. Choice Location. Not unusual to see quite a few white tail and mule deer, gray haired woodchuck couples moving about. To your back side of the cabin is natural 60 feet tall rock formations, jutting from the continental shifts, a natural barrier wall, privatizing your cabin even more.
Although we do not provide a washer/dryer, The Lost Sock located approx. 5 minutes away, takes in laundry at a very affordable price with soap, wash, dry, fold for 10.00 a load. Profess. Service....moreless
All your cooking and eating wares are supplied for both inside and outside cooking and dining. Extra items, ie vegetable peeler, cork screw, spatula's, even graters and various knives/forks cook/prep...moreless

The cabins are located in a woodsy, aspen, pine grove 1/2 mile off the highway directly adjacent to Custer, so one can get to and from all the major attractions within 5 to 20 minutes! Save time, fuel, even food costs, since we have full kitchen, 2 bedroom cabin/queen, with fold out couch & cots. Feels just like camping, you have 'everything plus!' all in a cozy mini vacation home. Just in front of us is West Dam, Rocky Knolls Golf Course. and just behind us is the Flintstones, must see theme park, and Mini Golf! You can easily do day trips such as visit the wineries in Hill City, along with Everything Prehistoric and art shops. Then, take the 1880 Train into Keystone, and tour one fabulous Tourist Town, right at the base of Mount Rushmore. Include The Indians for purchasing unique gift and souvenirs. Big Thunder Gold Mine for Panning Gold. Keystone usually has several historic 'shootouts' on Main. You can enjoy from the Boardwalk than runs the entire length of downtown. Return to Hill City on the 1880 Train, and perhaps dine at the famous Alpine Inn. Hill City is known for its wineries as well as its many art shops. And the drive back to the cabin is less than 12 miles!
Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, Rushmore Cave are close 10-20 miles.Jewel is very famous and the 2nd largest cave in the world.
That being said another day trip could include westward towards Devils Tower,(ancient volcano & loop back into South Dakota from the West through Belle Fourche or Spearfish...enjoy a gorgeous drive through Spearfish Canyon, perhaps lunch at Latchstring, and drive on into Deadwood and Lead South Dakota. Tour the casino's the Old Style Saloon #10 as well as Gulches of Fun welcome families. Deadwood has a unique museum , and Lead has mineral museum & new labs involving Neuro's. Dine out & drive back to Custer Rocky Knolls, just 60 miles. Makes a wonderful day trip being able to enjoy that much! Custer State Park is only 3 miles east of you. The sidewalk just 1/2 mile up the road from the Cabin can be hiked or biked right into the Park, or join up with a Mickelson Trail Head. (horses welcome) Enjoy a drive through the Wildlife Loop and see buffalo, prairie dogs, eagles galore. Fishing is abundant, as well as swimming and beach areas. There must be 6 lakes all within 12 miles of the cabin. Stockade lake being the closest is barely 3 miles...Legion Lake (one of my fav's) is 7 miles, and Sylvan lake is again 7 miles. Sylvan lake is just plain beautiful and an area to be enjoyed on really warm days, simply because it is a much higher elevation, you can even access Harney Peak, the Highest peak between here and the Swiss Alps. approx a 4 mile uphill hike...but breathtaking with all the Big Horn Sheep and Mountain Goats in plain view on this gorgeous Mountain Top! Back to fishing, I do supply poles, tackle and tackle box upon request! One of the better fishing lakes is Pactola, as well as Angustora and Orman Dam also include Walleye fishing! Really close to us, about 20 miles, is Hot Springs, with it's mineral waters at Evan's Plunge, the Mammoth Sight, and the Wild Horse Refuge. This is a wonderful day trip and can be accessed by driving through the Wild Life Loop. The sightseeing in Custer State Park and it's many drives are fabulous. The Game Lodge serves wild game. The Norbeck Center has actual dinosaur footprints to see. Iron Mountain Road and the Needles Highway are spectacular drives. Crazy Horse is not even 4 miles from the cabin and a wonderful 1/2 day can be spent there. They even have their own restaurant, beer and wine. Probably one if not 'THE' best Native American Museum in the world! This monumental task is a sight to see and very progressive. There are volksmarches to attend where one can actually walk on the outstretched arm of Crazy Horse. Incredible. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse both boast evening light shows that are very worthwhile attending. Check with the Custer Chamber of Commerce on any 'special events'. Another wonderful day trip could include the Water Slide Park, Reptile Gardens, Cosmos, Bear Country USA not even an hour from the cabin.
Downtown Custer offers several restaurants for a different dining and ambiance type try the Buglin Bull, or Dakota Cowboy, Sage Creek Inn, and for lighter dining lunch, even breakfast The Bakery is excellent, as well as a must do is the Purple Pie with lunch, dinner, and of course pie. 'Our Place' is just plain a hoot to see with all their Betty Boop decor, and just plain good breakfast and lunches. All your shopping needs or 'i forgots' can be easily found in Custer. We have a clinic/hospital/pharmacy, 2 grocery stores, a Family Dollar (I love that place) several Hardware stores with various outdoor camping and hiking items, and a Shopko. Shopping downtown is also a wonderful 1/2 day or more of different unique gift shops like Walk in the Woods, Jenny's Floral. Flora's Western Wear, Mention me for Black Hills Gold Purchases. I can help with itineraries.
Year Purchased: 1996
About the owner: I have been mostly 'IN' the visitor industry since 1985. We had a Hot Air Balloon Business in the Black Hills and in Phoenix. Our Home was in the Hills. A wonderful cabin, that I converted into a Bed & Breakfast in the early 90's. I loved it. I loved pleasing my guests with extra's they never expect (nor get) anywhere else. My love for the beauty and vast diversity in the Black Hills of South Dakota seems to have a need to be shared with guests, so in 2006, I converted these cabins from small residentials (they were built as duplex hunting cabins, but when I purchased them, they had been converted into single dwellings residential). In any event, I had moved out of the Custer area and closer to Rapid City. When a cabin would come up to rent, I'd go to 'the Hills' and work on them for a good week or two preparing them for the next year or two of residential renting. I missed the Real Black Hills so much! Sitting on the front patio of a cabin, one night, I was struck with how lucky I was to own such a place, so near a fishing pond, creek, and golf course, with it's lush green's...and so quiet and peaceful, esp. at night. There is a 60 foot high jutting of rocks upwards just behind the cabins, that privatize the back yard adding more privacy to each, and no city street lights to block the natural beauty of each and every star. I just wanted to share this place! and I knew people would become a bit nostalgic, and also be extremely happy with all the extra's I dreamt of adding if I indeed did reconvert these cabins into visitor rentals. Since these again became seasonal rentals, I can't believe how happy my guests are, and you will be too. You with your Cabin with a real heart in the heart of the woods. Now and then, not often, I can stay in one myself, and sure enough....it always leaves a wonderful lasting impression. The impression I hope to pass on to you!
Why the Owner Chose Custer:
I lived in Custer and sold a little real estate here and there and I was always driving past these Cabins, then known as The Crest apartments. They were just so 'for real' historically Black Hillsy and looked so lush in the pine and the rock backdrop. Everyone feels that way, or at least they did. The Cabins came up for sale in the early 90's. My Broker, my mentor!, who had been selling real estate in the hills for over 50 years, looked at me one day, and said 'reach for it' and I did. There has always been nothing but good vibes on this little acre and a half of heaven. They go with the place. And I have noticed how much happier they are being seasonal rentals, rather than residential rentals. Almost like 'they' love new visitors, too. And my repeat and referrals are phenomenal. Now there are so many new little vacation rental businesses starting out, the competition is great. But it helps everyone keep their prices affordable and TAKE CARE of their little piece of the Hills. Good for guests. Good for everyone.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
A person can just walk out the front door and hike or bike, never having to use their car! and get to great walking/biking even horse trails! In Minutes. I guess the location of the property was what sold me on it. So conveniently close to town, yet not in town. I'd be working on a cabin, and think 'now I have to drive to town to get this or that' and it was just a 3 minute drive! never fails to amaze me how 'out in the woods' you feel here. The wild life as I passed these cabins daily ( I lived across the road from them a ways) was always eye catching. It's nothing to see dozens of deer, wood chucks, squirrels, osprey and eagles. All the critters that need a good drink of water. And the fishing from West Dam and the fact that I could walk to the Dam or the Golf Course in just minutes. You can just tell, when you're on the property, all the rich history that happened just yesterday. It has a feeling of the 50's and 60's....and I have added some antiquities and decor to match the knotty pined interiors and their 'feel'. It really is a jewel of a place to stay. I am sure you'll feel the same way.
