Location: Sunset Beach, North Shore Oahu, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (50 minutes from Honolulu) View Map
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
Keywords: Oceanfront Home
Our oceanfront home, Kawela Kai, is located on the North Shore of Oahu in between Sunset Beach and the Turtle Bay Resort. The stretch of beach where we are located is beautifully secluded and uncrowded. The beach is protected by a coral reef.
The house is an air conditioned, cozy, two-bedroom, single-family home with it's own yard. It is furnished with a fully-equipped kitchen and all linens. There is one queen and two single beds. The single beds can be made into a king if needed, complete with the special foam piece and king sheets. For your convenience, we offer wireless internet access.
The house has a lovely covered lanai for protection from the sun or if you are a sun lover, there is a nice grassy area between the house and the ocean where you can soak up the sun. During the winter months and early spring, you may have the opportunity to see the humpback whales that migrate from Alaska. If the surf is not too high, you may see the whales breathing and breaching right from the lanai. Other wildlife may be seen from the lanai; such as birds, turtles, rays, Hawaiian monk seals, and the occasional surfer.
There is a washer and dryer available for your use during your stay. We have a small collection of books, games, and a few videos that you are welcome to use. As with many oceanfront homes on the North Shore, we are located on the road that goes around the island, so the bedrooms may experience some traffic noise at different times of the day.
The house sits about 18' above the beach. Access to the beach is down steps in the sea wall. Directly in front of the house is a flat rocky surface with sandy beach to the right and the left. Access to the water directly in front of the house is over a flat rock/coral shelf.
You may swim, snorkel, and surf in front of the house during the months from late spring through early fall, but because we are on the North Shore, when the surf is up it is not safe for inexperienced swimmers just about anywhere on the North Shore.
During the winter months, the powerful awesome large surf on the North Shore is tremendously exciting to watch. We are located two miles from Sunset Beach, three miles from Pipeline, and five miles from Waimea Bay. These three beaches are world famous for the large surf and surfing competitions. Even if you do not surf, it is exhilarating to watch!
We are located ten miles from historic Haleiwa town which offers a variety of shops and restaurants. We are about a mile from the championship golf courses at the Turtle Bay Resort.
In case you are not familiar with Hawaiian words, the "w" in Kawela is pronounced as a "v".

Cozy Oceanfront Home on Secluded Beach, North of Sunset Beach
Year Purchased: 2000
Why the Owner Chose Sunset Beach
We love the North Shore and specifically the part where the house is located because it is away from the crowds. We are a couple of miles from Sunset Beach which is exactly what we wanted. From our house or lanai, if we see four or five people walk by on the beach, that is a very crowded day! We chose this property because it is directly oceanfront. Nothing blocks our view. We like that our house is not connected to any other dwelling and we that we have our own yard.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Our house is much more to us than a piece of real estate. The house is our pride and joy and we are so grateful for it. We love relaxing there while being surrounded by so much beauty. We love watching the turtles come up for air. We are filled with awe as we see the whales breathe, breach, and frolic during winter and spring months. We can see these things happening while sitting on our lanai, sitting at our dinning room table, or washing dishes at the kitchen sink. Every meal at the house, offers a table with a terrific view. Not many restaurants can compete with our view. Needless to say, we prefer to stay home for meals. Mahalo for taking a look.

Lenae & Lori Jonny and I had an awesome stay at your house ( 10 days in 2005). We highly recommend it. We both hope to come back one day and sit out on the patio / Lanai and look at the turtles swim by. We had some great sunsets, and perfect weather. Anyone looking for a relaxing get-a-way at a clean and functional house. This is the place to choose. Don´t forget to drive up the road and have some trutti frutti drinks at the Turtle Resort just a few minutes up the Road. Also shrimps at Giovanni´s is a must do ;0)

Our stay at Kawela Kai was wonderful! We stayed here for our second anniversary. We live on the island and are very familiar with many of the locations on Oahu and we were so surprised to find such a beautiful, quite and secluded slice of paradise still available on the island! If you are looking for a secluded and romantic location, this is it! Lori and Lanae's cottage is simple, pleasant and clean. It is not as elaborate as some places we looked at, but it was very functional, livable and very, very clean! Even the windows were spotless! The location is nice and remote and has an awesome view of the ocean! The steps down to the beach are navigational but if you were an older person I think it would be difficult to manage the steep grade. The outdoor shower is absolutely fantastic and was used a great deal by both of us! We loved it. And we loved the 'turtle motif' on the wall. There really isn't anything negative I can say about this adorable 2 bedroom cottage other than the road noise can be bothersome. That was my only complaint but there is nothing that the owners can do about that. However, the owners were upfront about the road noise so we were prepared for it. However, if you take into consideration this awesome location and the gorgeous view you can forget about road noise...especially if you have a glass of wine on the lanai! :) Lori and Lanae were both very prompt and curteous. We've rented places before and I have to say they have been the best owners to work with. They are very prompt in their response and honnest and forthright about all their dealings. I would recommend Kawela Kai for a romantic getaway and really for anybody looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. We will be recommending this place to our cousin that is coming to visit this summer with his adult children. They will LOVE this location!

Thank you so very much for a great stay at Kewela Kai. The house was very clean, well kept and furnished-loved the newly remodeled bathroom! The view from the lanai is everything it is advertised to be. We stayed a week and it was so nice to have a great comfortable house to come "home" to every night to relax, chill and generally hang out. We used the laundry room more than once which was a nice modern washer and dryer. Only suggestion would be a light in the wash shed since it gets dark so early this time of year. If there was one we couldn't find it. We could go on and on about our time in Hawaii and being able to stay here but there are only so many characters available. THANK YOU Lenae and Lori for truly providing a home away from home while on vacation. Aloha and Ma halo. p.s. My O.C.D. got the best of me and I had to clean and organize the basket of snorkeling equipment. :) I hope the other guests continue to take care of this much appreciated equipment.

Came here after three days in Waikiki and truly felt we'd found paradise. We loved the house and its location for proximity to all we wanted to see on the North Shore. The Lanai is essentially where we 'lived' during our visit. Viewing turtles floating in the water as I write this review FROM THE LANAI! Beds were comfy. Everything as described. Plenty of accoutrements. The outdoor shower was a welcome friend as we returned from swimming with the turtle just down the road at Laniakea Beach (fantastic). Sunset Beach is nearby as is Ted's Bakery (and for the addicts: a Starbucks just a couple minutes away at Foodland). Beautiful little lizards coloring the evening were great too! Our family of four all worry that now we will be spoiled for future stays because no other accommodation will be able to hold up to our new standard. Again, this review is written from the Lanai as we are leaving in the morning. We are sad to be leaving. Thanks! From Washington (the state).

Thank You for a fantastic stay. Your home is a perfect get-a-way. The lanai was our favorite spot with beautiful views, soothing sounds from the waves and the sights of turtles. Location was just right far enough away from crowds but close enough to beaches and snorkeling. We did not want to leave but we figured we needed to, because the next renters were coming. This stay will be something we will remember forever. The listing and photos was accurate, the home was clean and well stocked. We got all the questions answered in fast and timley matter. Just perfect :) Thank You Again

We found this to be a perfect North Shore rental for our family. Owners were great to work with and the property was just as advertised. Clean, well-maintained, well-appointed. Covered deck and ocean-front yard were awesome amenities that you just won't find at any Waikiki hotel. Good location for exploring the North Shore. Highly recommended and we would definitely stay again.

Our friends, my husband, and I enjoyed your home for a couple of days in March. All I can say is that all of us wished we were there for a couple of weeks rather than a couple of days. We loved it! The surf was really up when we arrived, and we were just amazed at the sight from your porch. The home was quite comfortable and had everything we needed. If we go back to Oahu (which may happen in the not too distant future), we will definitely look at renting here again.

The photos and description were most accurate. The covered front porch is AWESOME with expansive views of the ocean where we watched whales each day. The house is very well-equipped with everything you could need during your stay. The owners were extremely prompt in answering questions throughout the rental/departure process. It is well located for doing whatever you would want to do. The Turtle Bay Resort is one mile up the road and we learned you can secure a FREE parking pass to enjoy the beach where they have a protected snorkeling area. We also like to walk a few miles each day and this was a lovely place to do that. We had a wonderful time!

Lenae and Lori, we had a wonderful visit in Hawaii and a very comfortable stay in your rental for our short visit this October. Your pictures and description fit very well. The sunsets were gorgeous from your back yard! We enjoyed walking along the ocean front near your property and the sandy beach wasn't far. It was very relaxing to sit on the back porch or in the back yard and just watch or listen to the ocean. We didn't get to see any whales from your property on this visit, but did watch a kayaker going back and forth! We spent a lot of time at Shark's Cove and Waimea Bay, but also enjoyed other beaches just a short drive away. We noticed they were setting up for surfing competitions at Sunset Beach, but our stay was too short to be there for that. Enjoyed our first attempts at snorkeling this visit to Hawaii which was a lot of fun! It was exciting to see such beautiful ocean life! We saw very beautiful fish, an eel, turtles and much more! Just wish we hadn't run out of time to do more of that. We look forward to visiting again and would enjoy staying at your rental again. We'll certainly recommend your property for a nice, relaxing stay to our friends and family. Mahalo!
