The only way to describe this comfortable Cape Haze residence is “quiet seclusion”! With lots of outdoor living space, you will never want to be inside! This tropical gem has a lot to offer. Perched on the bank of Amberjack Creek, this inviting home is surrounded by mature tropical plantings, including more than fifty palms of eight species (which is why I call this place 'El Palmeral' - The Palm Grove). Also, avocado, mango, bananas, bromeliads, orchids and much more.
There is a private dock (equipped with a 3,500 lb. boat lift, water, electricity and an underwater 'snook' light). Our dock is on Amberjack Creek, a tidal inlet, which provides shallow-draft access to the Gulf of Mexico (boats which draw in excess of 16 inches are not recommended for the creek, however, there are inexpensive slip rentals within 4 minutes of the property at Gasparilla Pass for larger boats). The creek abounds with wildlife - fish from the dock or watch for the Sandhill Cranes, Manatees and the throngs of leaping mullet, among others. The dock includes a new 6'x8' floating dock extension which makes launching of the two kayaks a breeze! The kayaks are high-tech, Swedish-designed 'Point 65 North' modular kayaks, which can be configured as one person or tandem kayaks.
The shell-covered back yard ties the creek side-setting seamlessly into the 1,300 square foot screen-enclosed pool and Lanai, for what one visitor described as an 'obnoxiously paradisical' experience. The heated pool, which hovers beside the creek, includes a therapy bench with powerful air/water therapy jets and the 350 square foot lanai can be closed with glass sliders in inclement weather for an uninterrupted outdoor feeling. The house has 4 sets of pocket, double sliding doors, which open onto the pool cage and lanai, further bringing the outdoors inside!
Walk down to the creek-side hammock and disappear for a while with a good book…this home is equipped for relaxation, and is also within walking distance of the local post office, grocery store, bank and pizza parlor!
As members of the Cape Haze POA, we have access to the association's 400 yd long, private, Gulf beach, adjacent to Cape Haze on Don Pedro Island. The beach is accessible, using our kayaks, from Don Pedro Island State Park's 100 acre land base, .9 miles from our property. It is a 4-minute (280 yard) paddle from the Park's dock to our community dock on the island, then a 5-minute (500 yard) walk to the Gulf beach (see the map of the route in the photo section).
In addition to the beaches adjacent to us on Don Pedro (Palm) Island, which are accessible by kayak, boat or ferry, the closest beach by car is at 19th St. on Gasparilla Island (Boca Grande), about 10 minutes away. Once you reach 19th St. there is beach access on every street all the way to the south end of the island, which is another 3 1/2 miles. So there are literally dozens of Gulf beaches. You can also drive north to Manasota Key in Englewood which is only about 15 minutes away. Once on Manasota Key there are three major county park beaches at the north, middle and south end of the Key, as well as Stump Pass State Park, which is at the very south end of the Key and is absolutely stunning.
It is only 4 minutes by car to the Boca Grande Causeway and 20 minutes by boat (at 'no wake' speeds) to Gasparilla Sound & the Gulf from our property's dock on Amberjack Creek. Minutes (1 to 15) away from multiple Gulf beaches, fine-dining restaurants, multiple state parks, nature preserves, walking & biking trails, boat tours, fishing trips, etc.
Each guest is provided with a personalized code for keyless entry valid for the length of their stay. Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is 10:00 am. The rental rate includes the cleaning fee. Upon arrival guests are provided with a detailed Guest Manual, describing all of the ins and outs of the property, including entertainment system operation, trash day, local resources and activities, etc. Confirmed guests are provided with their access code and a PDF copy of the manual, by email, in advance of their arrival.
Rental fees for reservations made more than 60 days in advance of your arrival date can be made in 2 or 3 installment payments.

About the owner: My name is Richard Haynes. I was raised in Virginia, Florida, Maryland and DC during the 50s and 60s. When we were not living in Florida, we still visited annually for vacation and to see family in Sarasota and Fort Pierce (Sarasota's Marie Selby was my great-aunt). Trips to Florida were always the highlight of the year. We started visiting Captiva annually (just after the bridge was built in the mid-60s). However, when Captiva started getting built up, our Mother switched to Boca Grande in the mid-70s, staying at the Gasparilla Inn at first - later buying a 1911 cottage in the historic district. For me, moving back to Florida on a full-time basis has been a dream come true, being a time of renewal and an opportunity to rediscover all of those things I loved about the Gulf coast as a child.
Why the Owner Chose Cape Haze:
Having lived in and visited different parts of Florida, the southwest Gulf coast is my favorite by far. Within that region, the Cape Haze/Lemon Bay/Englewood area is the 'sweet spot' for me. Only 1 hour from all of the resources and activities offered by Sarasota and Fort Myers, it is still a small community with much of the charm of 'Old Florida' that I recall from my youth. The Cape Haze/Placida area is off the beaten path and generally slow paced. Access to beautiful, natural areas and Gulf beaches is exceptional. For me, our house is a refinement of all of those qualities - a self-contained, tropical Florida haven. We are in the tropical zone of far South Florida, which means that not only all the citrus family can be grown here, but also coconuts, mangos, papaya, bananas, etc., giving the area a truly tropical feeling.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This property has an intimate warmth, which is hard to find at any price. The comforts of the back yard with its screened lanai and pool enclosure, multiple seating areas, luxuriant tropical foliage and waterside setting are absolutely seductive. You may come here with the idea of having it be your base-camp and find that it is your destination.
