Sourdeval house description
The Gite has 2 double bedrooms with en-suite showers,1 double bedroom,1 bunk bedroom,1 twin bedded room with a disabled wet room,Large fully-equipted kitchen,Large Lounge with free sat T.v. Outside, parking for three cars, lawned area with swing and BBQ seated area. The Manoir was built by a local landowner in around 1800 in the reign of Napoleon I and is situated in the vallée de la Sée, midway between Mont st Michel and Caen, and deep in the heart of the bocage. La Torte Planche is uniquely placed for guests to visit many of the major sites in the battle for Normandy and to visit Mont st Michel one of the most iconic religious sites in France.
The gite is delightfully located in the Manche area of Normandy close to the famous salmon river and between the towns of Sourdeval and Mortain and has been carefully renovated and furnished to provide spacious and comfortable rooms with a clean modern feel. La Torte Planche is 200 yards from the restaurant and Eco museum Moulin de la Sée but for visiting families its kitchen has been fully fitted with all the things which make life easy and for outside cooking there is a garden arbour with gas barbecue and dining area. The gardens which are mainly laid to lawn have plenty of room for children to let off steam and there are swings for them to use during the long summer evenings enjoyed in this part of France.
For the less able bodied a tiled ramp has been installed from the car park into the house. In addition to the family bedrooms a twin bedroom on the ground floor contains an en-suite bathroom (wet room) with sit down shower suitable for people with mobility problems. This room also has its own private balcony with far reaching views over the river valley.
The industrial history of the vallée is interesting and in the past it produced such varied items as paper, the royal household of Queen Victoria purchased her writing paper here, cutlery, swords and bayonets were produced for the French military in the Guy Degrene factory and in the late 1800s leather tanning for the Moulin of the Sée to fabricate air bellows for the whole of France.
Whilst you are in the area take some time to really look at the hedgerows, this is the infamous bocage where allied troops experienced such difficulty. It is only when you see the lie of the land that you come to realise exactly how difficult the task must have been. Although in early August 1944 the costly battles around Mortain provided the allies with a spearhead into the liberation of Europe the vallée was spared major damage as both Allied and German command needed the infrastructure intact to supply their combat forces.
On 25 July 1944, after six weeks of warfare along a stalemated front, American forces under General Bradley mounted an attack which broke through the German defenses near St Lo. On 30 July, the British Army mounted a supporting attack on the eastern flank of the American armies much of the German armored reserves being rushed west to halt the American breakthrough were diverted to face the threat of the British attack. Almost the entire western half of the German front in Normandy collapsed, and on 1 August, American forces captured Avranches. With the capture of this town at the base of the Cotentin peninsula, and an intact bridge at Pontaubault nearby, the American forces had 'turned the corner'; the German front could no longer be anchored against the sea at its western end and American forces could advance west and south . Although the Germans held the vital road junction of Vire, the U.S. VII Corps under Lieutenant General J. Lawton Collins captured Mortain—19 mi (31 km) east of Avranches—on 3 August.
